The equation shows that the ethene and steam react 1 : 1. In order
to get this ratio, you would have to use equal volumes of the two
gases.
This is very surprising at first sight. Even if the reaction was one-
way, you couldn't possibly convert all the ethene into ethanol.
There isn't enough steam to react with it.
The reason for this oddity lies with the nature of the catalyst. The
catalyst is phosphoric(V) acid coated onto a solid silicon dioxide
support. If you use too much steam, it dilutes the catalyst and can
even wash it off the support, making it useless.

Equilibrium considerations
Incineration is often an attractive processing step to reduce the volume of solid waste. Properly,
incineration should not be considered as an ultimate disposal method since it cannot function
without a landfill or other means to receive its solid residues. In addition to volume
reduction ,incineration also offers the potential advantages of detoxification of combustible toxins or
pathologically contaminated material, reduction of environmental impact related to leaching of
organic material from raw refuse landfills, and provision of an energy resource through the use of a
boiler enclosure. The disadvantages of incineration include high cost relative to many other waste
management options, operating problems owing to the sensitivity of the process to changes in
refuse character, staffing problems made more critical in light of the complexity of the process,
secondary environmental impacts such as air and noise pollution and discharge of highly polluted
wastewater, adverse public reactions in
