Samba Server

 Samba is very versatile service that you can use for


different purposes on your network.
 Apart from sharing files, it also offer Window domain
services such as directory services.
 Samba does so by supporting the SERVER MESSAGE
BLOCK (SMB) protocol and Common Internet File
System (CIFS).
 Installing Samba is quite simple.
 Samba is a powerful suite of applications.
 It is an open source implementation of the SMB protocol
that runs on Linux but is able to communicate with
Windows Clients like a native application.

Samba Configuration

The Samba server configuration tool is a graphical interface


for managing Samba shares, users and basic server settings.
It modifies the configuration files in the
/etc/samba/directory.
Any changes to these files not made using the application are
preserved.
Samba Server Types
Below are 3 types of Samba servers used while Configuring
Samba.
 Stand-Alone Server
 Domain Member Server
 Domain Controller

Samba Deamons
The samba code is actually composed of several components
and deamons. Three main samba deamons are :
 smbd
 nmbd
 winbindd

Setting Up a Samba file server (STEPS)

1. Create a directory on the Linux file system on the


Samba server.
2. If needed , create Linux users and given permissions.
3. Install the samba server.
4. Define the share in /etc/samba/smb.conf.
5. Create a samba user account that has access to the
share.
6. Restart the samba services
7. Tell SELinux to give access to samba server.
