There are many factors impact the one’s learning style some of which cognitive structure,

social environment, educational experience. I would like to share my experience in the class

and relate this experience with Kolb’s four stages reflective model.

Concrete Experience (What I did) : I have done a project on insects. Where I have

organized various activities to discover the ‘birds’. And In the first activity, I started the topic

of ‘birds’ by introducing, and with open-ended questions, I attempted to know the students’

prior knowledge. I have noticed some of the students not participating in discussions and did

not know much about the topic. Some were demonstrating interest and tried to participate in

the class discussion using there prior knowleldge about the topic. This helped me plan my

activities, we decided to go out of school and let the students observe kinds of birds in a farm,

most of them tried to catch chicken though some of them were afraid to be close, they kept

watching from distance, Afterwards, we all searched for the name of the birds we found and

learned more about them through different activities.

Reflective Observations (what I wonder): my observation during this activity was that

students learn from each other, the changed what they know about a special pird, some

students were motiviting others to come near the birds and try to explore it, they liked

collaborating and helping each other. What I wonder is how interacting and social learning are

crucial, they are part of the learning process. As rightly stated, “Social learning theory also

has a great root in encouraging self-efficacy by using constructive feedback. Students who get

positive reinforcement have more confidence in themselves and their abilities” (Teaching and

Education, 2020).

Abstract Conceptualization (what I learned/so what?):

I have learned that collaboration is and essential part of the learning process and I should

include it in the lesson plan for each activity, also positive reinforcement gives the students

the energy to work hard and be active. “According to Turesky and Wood (2010), Kolb’s

theory was similar to previous thinkers’ such as Piaget, Dewey, and Lewin, because these

theorists also believed that the heart of learning lies in the way we process experience, in

particular, our critical reflections on experiences and the meanings we draw from them”

(p.121)” (Kurt, 2020).

Furthermore, based on my abservation, I have realized that there different teaching methods

that can be used to teach students. Using adequate material also can help students understand

and memorize the lesson.

Application “now what?”

From this course in the university of the people, I have learned about the learning theories, I

would include the mixture of the three learning theories Skinner’s Behaviorism, Piaget’s

Cognitive Constructivism, and Vygotsky’s Social Constructivism, through different strategies,

classroom discussion, positive reinforcement, hands-on activities, and creating a positive

classroom environment. According to Dylan Wiliam, “Everything works somewhere, and

nothing works everywhere”(TeacherToolkit, 2010).
