Q1. What are exhaustible and inexhaustible natural resources?  
 
Ans.  Exhaustible natural resources : 
These resources are present in unlimited quantity in nature and are not likely to be 
exhausted by human activities. Example : sunlight, air etc.  
Inexhaustible natural resources : 
The amount of these resources in nature is limited. They can be exhausted by human 
activities.  
Example : forests, wild life, coal etc.  
 
Q2.  What are fossil fuels?  
 
Ans. The fuels which are formed from the dead remains of living organisms i. e. plants 
and animals are known as fossil fuels.  
Example : Coal,  petroleum and natural gas.  
 
Q3. What do you mean by carbonisation?  
 
Ans.  The slow process of conversion of dead vegetation into coal is called 
carbonisation.  
 
Q4. Explain why coal is called a fossil fuel.  
 
Ans.  Coal is formed from the dead remains of vegetation ( fossil). Therefore,  coal is 
called a fossil fuel.

Ans.  Petroleum oil and gas are lighter than water and they do not mix with it. Therefore,  
the layers containing petroleum oil and gas are above the layer of water under the earth.

Ans.  The process of separating the various constituents of petroleum is known as 
refining.

Ans.  The separation of petroleum into different fractions ( refining)  is done by the 
process of fractional distillation.  
Fractional distillation is a process in which fractions of petroleum having different 
boiling point ranges are collected separately.

Ans. Constituents of petroleum : 
1. Petroleum gas ( LPG)-- Fuel for cooking food.  
2. Petrol - solvent for dry cleaning.  
3. Kerosene - Fuel for stoves, lamps  
4. Diesel - Fuel for electric generators.
