Alice Is Missing is a silent role playing game about the disappearance of Alice Briarwood, a high school

junior in the sleepy Northern California town of Silent Falls. During the game, we’ll use our phones to
send messages to each other as we unearth clues in an attempt to discover what happened to Alice.

Just to remind everyone, this game inherently deals with a missing teenage girl in a small town, and all
of the topics that can arise when that happens. Our characters will be the people closest to her
attempting to unravel the mystery behind her disappearance. Because of this, themes like tense family
dynamics, grief, death, violence, jealousy, and helplessness can and often do come up during the game.
If there is anything at all that you need to address with me, just give me the heads up in your private
channel by tagging the @Faciliator role. Your safety is more important than the game.

The game provides several safety tools built in to help with building a safe environment for us to play
this game in: Lines and Veils, the X Card, and the Open Door Policy.

The first thing I want to do is discuss Lines and Veils, topics that are completely off the table and topics
than can be glossed over and vaguely addressed in play.

Currently, these are the Lines & Veils set for this particular playthrough.

LINES (Off the table)

Victim Blaming
Pedophilia
Sexual Non-Consent

VEILS (Glossed over)

Gore
Violence

These lists can be updated with new ones during play should it ever come up. ( @Facilitator Line:
Topic/Content) or ( @Facilitator Veil: Topic/Content) can be posted in the channel it comes up in so that
the Facilitator can update the list.

THE X CARD
As much preparation as a group can make prior to the game session, there may topics that come up in
play that are triggering in the moment, and should those moments arise, we will be using the X Card to
remove any piece of content from the game. In order to utilize this tool, all you have to do is type !x to
display the X Card in whatever channel you encounter the content in and the gameplay will
automatically pivot as a result. Make sure to tag the @Facilitator so that they don't miss it. As the
Facilitator, I will briefly check in with you in your private channel to ensure you are okay, and perhaps
follow up with a new Line or a new Veil.

OPEN DOOR POLICY

If you as a player need to step away from the game for any reason, just leave a message for the
@Facilitator in your private channel and should you decide not to continue, your clue cards will be
reassigned. You are still invited to the debrief should you feel up for it. Your health is more important
than the game at all times.

Now that we’ve discussed player safety tools, it’s time to get started.

[!poster in #important] This is our Alice, we will learn more about her during the Character Creation
phase.

[!motives in #botcommands]

We have chosen our characters in advance and I have sent your character and motive cards to your
private channels for you to read through.

Your character card has three prompts.

 Your answer to the Background prompt is information you will share with the group during the
Character Creation phase.
 Your answer to the Secret prompt is information that your character will keep to themselves at
first, but should be revealed to at least one person before the game’s end.
 The Voicemail prompt is the jumping off point for recording the message your character last left
Alice before they knew she was missing. We will all take a few minutes to record this message
later in the set up and upload it to a file sharing place (I use Google Drive but you can use
Dropbox or any other place you might prefer). Post your links to #voicemails and I will play them
all in a playlist on Roll20 at the end of game session before the debrief.

Along with your character card, you have been assigned a drive card. Your drive card establishes your
Motive and helps to establish our relationships with one another. You’ll combine the information on this
card with the information on your Character Card to create the person you’ll inhabit during the game.
Take a minute to write down any initial thoughts about your character in your private channel — their
physical description, their favorite class, their home life, etc. You may also start brainstorming ideas for
your Background question and Secret. However, your answer may be influenced by other people’s
responses, so don’t get too attached to any idea quite yet.

Now, let’s share our characters, including a physical description, their pronouns, their relationship to
Alice, and any other important information, as well as the answer to Background prompt on their
character card. Do not share your Secret—it should come out in play. Remember to listen to other
people’s answers, and adjust yours as necessary to fit the fiction they’ve established. Feel free to ask
players additional questions about their character. Make sure to take down any notes you’d like in their
section on your Character Record. I’ll start with the information specifically about Charlie.

Charlie Barnes moved away from Silent Falls with their mom at the end of the last school year after their
parents divorced. They just arrived in town to stay with their dad for winter break, and hope to see Alice
and the others while they’re here. A few days ago, Alice stopped responding. They haven’t heard from
her since.

[Character Creation, starting with Charlie]

Look at the two relationships you’ve been given on your Drive card. You’ll assign each of these
relationships to another character. These relationships are usually one sided, meaning that just because
you feel that way about a person doesn’t mean they necessarily feel that same way back.
Sometimes assigning each other dissonant relationships can result in more interesting characters. Who
has a relationship that they’d like to start with?

[Assign Relationships]

We are going to take a few minutes before the Hunches phase and record our voicemails, for those who
haven’t already. These are the last voice messages we left Alice before we knew she was missing. Use
the voicemail prompt on your Character Card for inspiration, but also incorporate your Secret in some
way. It can be direct, subtle, or anywhere in-between. These voicemails will play at the end of the game
as the closing moment of our story. Don’t worry about changing your voice or doing too much to make
you sound different, these messages should be as sincere and grounded as we can make them. Try to
keep them under a minute, and post the link to the #voicemails channel.

I have used the AliceBot for several aspects of the game, but the bulk of the gameplay as far as the cards
are concerned will happen on Roll20.

When you load the Roll20 game, you will see the Intro screen, which I will transition to the Starting
Hunches screen. Make sure you are not transmitting your audio and video in the Settings menu. You will
also see a hand above your avatar. I have distributed your clue cards in advance. You may access your
hand by click on it. Make sure your cards are sorted by deck by clicking ‘By Deck’ on the upper right
corner of the hand. You’re able to see your cards face up but they won’t be legible until you click on
them to make them bigger.

Do not click on the card until the timer says it’s time to read it.

Charlie reads her cards at – 90, 45

Dakota reads her cards at – 80, 40
Evan reads his cards at – 70, 35
Jack reads their cards at – 60, 30
Julia reads their cards at – 50, 20

In the #important channel, I have posted a link to a streaming room with the video timer. Just leave it
open in a tab and everyone should have the video sync’d so that when I press play, the timer will go for
everyone at the same time. Just something set up for your convenience.
