Good afternoon teacher and classmates, My full name is Fernando Revilla and today I am going

to tell you a little about a crime that happened in the United States in 1999.

On April 20th, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were a pair of students, both entered
Columbine High School and began shooting and detonating explosives resulting in the deaths
and injuries of numerous students and teachers." Clearly these were irresponsible, immoral
actions and illegal, this shouldn’t have happened, but there was no way the school could had
prevented their students actions.

Following the shooting, it was speculated that Harris and Klebold purposely chose athletes,
minorities and Christians as their victims. Likewise, it was speculated that Harris and Klebold
had carried out the shootings as retaliation for being bullied.

after this event, many schools across America enacted “zero-tolerance” rules regarding
disruptive behavior and threats of violence from students. It is the fear of this event that has
caused schools to take these measures. Columbine High School reopened in the fall of 1999,
but the massacre left a scar on the Littleton community, prosperity was not present after said
crime.

Now, this case would have had another destiny if only the school had taken some prevention
measures like installing weapons detectors, increasing surveillance, taking psychological care
more seriously, etc. However, this could had been worse, the fact that some of the injured
people survived was a stroke of luck for them.

On the other hand, if those two criminals had not committed suicide, they would be guilty for
all these criminal acts, perhaps a life sentence; Unlike the Peruvian system, the North
American system usually uses juries to determine if the accused has criminal responsibility; In
particular, I do not think it is possible that the defense could had achieved a positive effect,
except for a reduction in their sentence.

What should schools bear in mind when this event happens?

In relation to this background, I believe that each school should organize some prevention
measures. It is true that there is no exact way to control this, however, the percentage of risks
can be reduced.

Also, a question according to our social reality. Are Peruvian schools any safer than American
schools?

No, Peruvian schools are not any safer than American schools. It is well known that in many
schools in Peru, it is much easier to bring a weapon into the classrooms, this is because there is
no respective control.

On the other hand, private school students are nowhere as likely to do this, the percentage
would be lower, because the education of children is slightly better than in public schools. In
conclusion, a public school isn't quite as safe as a private school. However, a public school is
just as risky as private schools. I believe the thing that causes the greatest risk are acts of
bullying, this causes people to act inappropriately or irresponsibly
