Summary
The use of the Internet has conferred many advantages to the modern man. Many young
people use this technology regularly to either create or pass across messages. The survey
research design was adopted in this study to find out why young people use the Internet;
identify the places they use it and establish if their use of this medium has weakened their
face-to-face or interpersonal communication.

Statement :
The Internet gives many benefits, but unfortunately, it is true it does not provide that
much of a positive. It gives people less human interaction since using the Internet so
much and forgetting the feeling of connecting people face-to-face.

Paraphrasing (Page 186)
Work in groups of three students. Each student paraphrases a different excerpt from the reading,
below. Before starting, look again at the guidelines about how to paraphrase on page 80.

1. "Critics see these trends as leading to the death of face-to-face interactions, widespread

loneliness and alienation, and millions being lured into dangerous liaisons by

unscrupulous people."

Paraphrase:

"Experts believe that these trends may lead to the death of face-to-face contact,

increasing loneliness and alienation, as well as millions being drawn into dangerous

associations by deceitful people."

2. "For example, good looks and close physical proximity are powerful factors in initial

attraction in the real world. On the Internet, where people form relationships sight

unseen, these factors are irrelevant."

Paraphrase:

"For instance, we find that physical attractiveness and close physical proximity plays

significant factors in real life. In the virtual world, where people form relationships

without seeing each other, such factors are irrelevant."

3. "Because the Internet is shrouded in the cloak of anonymity, people take great risks in

self-disclosure. Thus, feelings of intimacy can develop more quickly. Sometimes this

experience can provide a false sense of intimacy, which can create uncomfortable

feelings if a face-to-face meeting ensues."

Paraphrase:

"Due to the anonymity of the Internet, people are unafraid to reveal personal information.

An intimate relationship is therefore more likely to develop. In some cases, this can

create an illusion of intimacy, which can lead to discomfort if a face-to-face meeting is

conducted."
