HISTORICAL FACT: September 11, 2001 attacks

It is said that September 11, 2001 went from being a beautiful and clear day to one of the
darkest in the history of the United States, that same day was the election in New York City.

It is considered that before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, air travel in the
United States and the world was much easier. Identification was not required to go through
security at airports. Security at air terminals was handled by poorly trained private
contractors recruited by the airlines. Not all cargo luggage was searched, and people barely
passed through metal detectors.

That morning, it's reported the four commercial airliners traveling from the northeastern
United States to Los Angeles and San Francisco kidnapped mid-flight by 19 al Qaeda
terrorists. The kidnappers were organized into three groups of five kidnappers and one
group of four.

The first airplane to reach its target was American Airlines Flight 11. It crashed into the North
Tower of the World Trade Center complex in New York City's Lower Manhattan, minutes
after the South Tower of the World Trade Center was hit by United Airlines Flight 175. A third
flight, American Airlines Flight 77, which had taken off from the kidnapped Dulles
International Airport over Ohio, crashed into the west side of the Pentagon (headquarters of
the US Army) in Arlington County, Virginia, causing a partial collapse of that side of the
building. The fourth and final airplane kidnapped was United Airlines Flight 93, bound for
Washington, DC. The plane's passengers tried to regain control of the plane away from the
kidnappers, eventually diverting the flight from its intended target; it crashed in a field near
Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
In this shared history, the national security strategy is also told, the US government
announced its willingness to face potential threats from terrorist groups or "rogue states"
through preventive attacks. These could be carried out without there being an imminent
threat, even when there was no certainty as to when or where these actors could carry out
their attacks.
