Short Note on Alauddin's Chittor campaign

Alauddin Khalji(1296–1316), a Delhi Sultanate, who even conquered many kingdoms in his tenure. In
all of those, Siege of Chittorgarh(Chittor) is so long that it took like eight months to capture Chittor
Fort. Alauddin captured this fort from Ratnasimha, a Guhila King. There are several stories about
this particular campaign like there was mentioned in poem that this capture is all about Padmavati,
beautiful wife of Ratnasimha. This exact poem is plot for a film Padmaavat(2018).

In early 1303, Alauddin marched to Chittor Fort with a whole army and they camped near Berach
river that are near to the Chittor. Before this, they even conquered kingdoms between Delhi and
Chittor. The Large army of attackers surround all around the fort and made the defenders to suffer
from famine. They tried to enter in a several way before this happening but the defenders were
strong enough to defend themselves. Finally in August of 1303, Alauddin entered the fort and lots of
blood shed there. There were reports like 30,000 of population were cut down. After siege, all the
Rajput women committed Jauhar, to protect themselves from raping and dishonour.

After Conquering, Alauddin assigned this fort to his son named Khizr Khan and renamed Chittor as
Khizarabad after the name of his son. After some years, Alauddin then decided to rule Chittor
indirectly and gave governance to a Hindu chief Maladeva. Kanhadadeva, brother of Maladeva,
saved Alauddin’s life once in the past. So, it is more like gifting him the kingdom.
