Fundamentos de la Enseñanza y el Aprendizaje del Inglés 2

Dear students,

This year we are going to discuss more in depth what language is and how it is taught and
learned. This first term we are going to be working with the book “Linguistics” by HG
Widdowson, which I have uploaded to our Facebook group. Your second task is to read
chapter 2 and answer the following questions:

1) What are the benefits of the arbitrary relationship between sign and meaning?
2) Why are models useful?
3) What is the difference between langue and parole? How can you compare these
concepts to those of competence and performance?
4) What is the relationship between the synchronic and the diachronic aspects of
language?
5) What is the difference between formal and functional grammar?
6) What is the communicative competition of a language?

We are going to check the answers and any doubts you may have in a Zoom class on
Wednesday 22nd April at 3 PM
