PRACTICE WORKSHEET

PART 1 Read the text about traditions around the world.

-La Tomatina

This might be largest tomato fight in the world. It’s not quite known how it could have
become famous, but there are many theories surrounding it. One of the most popular is
that during a parade of gigantes y cabezudos in 1945, those who weren’t included in the
event may have started a brawl in the main square using tomatoes from a local vegetable
stand as weapons. You would never throw something that is not a vegetable in this
parade.

Regardless, this annual festival is held in Buñol, Spain on the last Wednesday of August as
part of a week of festivities in Buñol and quite literally consists of people throwing
tomatoes at each other for fun.
-Monkey food festival in Thailand.

This festival supposedly brings good luck and is organized yearly in Thailand, the city of
Lopburi, to be exact. This commonly might be on the last Sunday of November; enormous
amounts of food may be displayed all over the city and left for monkeys to feast upon.
And it is not just any old food; buffets are prepared by chefs to keep the only the monkeys
happy. Humans might not eat the monkey’s food because it is all for them.

Many other activities, including monkeys, are featured there as well, including people
dressing up like monkeys or wearing monkey masks, dancing, and celebrating.

-Chilean myths

In Chile we have our own legends and myths too. For example, our vast mythology varies
from north to south and Chiloe is highlighted across the country as one of the most
famous places regarding this issue. El caleuche being a ghost vessel kidnapping fishermen
from the sea at night is very controversial, this tends to explain why so many people gets
lost in the ocean at night, el Trauco a kind of wicked little man it is known for seducing
women and getting them pregnant among others. In these cases, you should never expose
yourself to danger, the local islanders claim all these stories to be true, so it is an
inseparable part of the local idiosyncrasy and popular culture.
