Chapter 2: Pressure
(2.1 Pressure in Liquids)

Let’s recall
Discussion:
State three factors that affect liquid pressure.
Liquid pressure is calculated using the following formula:

P = hρg

where P = liquid pressure

h = depth of liquid
ρ = density of liquid
g = gravitational acceleration

The S.I. unit for pressure, P is pascal (Pa)

1 Pa = 1 N 𝑚𝑚−2 or 1 kg 𝑚𝑚−1 𝑠𝑠 −2
Factors Affecting Liquid Pressure
1. Depth
2. Density
cross-sectional area and the shapes of the column do not affect pressure in liquids.
Solving Problems Involving Pressure in Liquids

The formula P = hρg is used to calculate the pressure at a depth in a liquid. The surface of the liquid also
experiences pressure.

Therefore, the actual pressure experienced by an object in a liquid is calculated with the following formula.
