ABSTRACT
Diabetes Mellitus is a series of symptoms caused by the increase of blood sugar or glucose because
of absolute or relative insulin deficiency. Basically, there are five basic treatments for the diabetes
mellitus patients including diabetic diet, physical exercises, public health counseling,
Hypoglycemia medications such as Oral Hypoglycemic Agents (OHA) and insulin, and pancreas
transplantation organ. Based on the health records of the previous Diabetes Mellitus patients in
internal disease clinic of RSUD Dr. Mohammad Soewandhie Surabaya, Observed in Mei 2009,
there are 34.2% patients with normal glucose level and 65.8% patients with abnormal glucose level.
The entire patients are treated using the same medical treatments combining medication and diet.
For this reason, a research is conducted to examine different factors affecting the glucose level
between the patients with the normal glucose level and the patients with the abnormal glucose level
in internal disease clinic of RSUD Dr. Mohammad Soewandhie Surabaya.
This is a comparative study using cross sectional method. The samples of the research are Diabetes
Mellitus patients, who fulfill the criteria in internal disease clinic of RSUD Dr. Mohammad
Soewandhie Surabaya. Those criteria are the Diabetes Mellitus patients registered in Mei 2009,
aged 20-60, received nutrition consulting, lived in Surabaya, and had either normal or abnormal
glucose level in blood. The samples are taken and chosen using simple random sampling and
lottery technique. 29 samples are taken for both patients with normal glucose level and abnormal
glucose level. Each group of patients is analyzed in order to find the factors affecting their glucose
level. The factors are compared whether there is a different factor. The data of the glucose level are
obtained through the medical records of the patients and other data are attained using questionnaire.
Then, the data are statistically analyzed using Chi-Square Test.
The research shows that there are differences in diet pattern (proper variety, schedule, and
quantity), physical exercises pattern, and understanding toward the advantage of diabetes mellitus
counseling between patients with the normal glucose level and the abnormal glucose level
(p<0.05). There is no difference in a matter of Oral Hypoglycemic Agents (OHA) consumption.
Both patients with normal and abnormal glucose level are obedient to consume the oral medication.
Based on the results, it can be concluded that there are different factors affecting glucose level
between the patients with the normal glucose level and the abnormal glucose level. Those factors
are diet pattern (proper variety, schedule, and quantity), physical exercises pattern, and
understanding toward the advantage of diabetes mellitus counseling. Therefore, activities related to
the communication, information, and education such as activating public counseling and
establishing Diabetes Club need to be improved. It considers important for the patients to give them
a place to share experiences and information.
