individuals have spent their time at coffee shops
throughout history. We might obtain our news via the
internet rather than a neighbour, and we might write on
a laptop rather than paper. Instead of listening to a
storyteller, we might read on our Kindles, text our
buddies instead of conversing with the person next to us,
and follow old acquaintances on Facebook instead of
people watching. People have always gone to coffee
shops to acquire news, exchange ideas, listen to stories,
and catch up with friends. Even spending hours at a
coffee shop while spending nearly nothing isn't new —
Englishmen used to spend all day in a coffee shop and
only pay a penny for admission.
