1 Introduction
The Premier® removable production packer with Strik-
er® is a new class of removable packers for wells that
demand the sealing performance of a permanent pack-
er and the flexible workover options of a traditional re-
trievable packer. The tool is a hybrid hydrostatic and
hydraulic packer with the features and advantages of
both designs.
2 Description
The Premier removable production packer with Striker
has a primary setting mechanism actuated by absolute
well pressure, so it may be set without running a plug or
packer setting tool.
The secondary setting mechanism is the standard hy-
draulic method of running a plug in the packer tail pipe
and pressurizing the tubing.
The packer comes in two basic configurations:
1) Premium thread, box × pin, or 2) Left hand (LH)
square thread with sealbore × premium pin. The first
configuration allows threading the packer directly to the
tubing, while the second configuration provides work-
over flexibility so the tubing can be disconnected via an
anchor type seal assembly from the upper sealbore of
the packer. With the appropriate completion design, ei-
ther configuration can be retrieved on the production
tubing using a specialized Baker Hughes chemical cut-
ter. Alternatively, the second configuration can be re-
trieved on the work string using a Premier Work string
Retrieving Tool (POWER™) (Product Family H78464).
3 Application
The Premier packer with Striker has been developed
for markets where remote actuation of the production
packer within a completion brings added benefit and
cost savings to the customer. Savings can be achieved
by reducing rig and packer setting time and minimizing
the risk associated with standard well intervention set-
ting methods. It also reduces the need for additional
well services.
In addition to the cost savings, the Premier packer with
Striker and its tail pipe assembly are removed from the
well on the production tubing by mechanically or chem-
ically cutting the packer mandrel.

7 Preservation of Product
Storage Recommendations
Packers should be stored in a clean, dry area, preferably with climate control. Packers stored in a hor-
izontal position should be rotated 90° at least once every two weeks. A packer should be supported
by either the packer body or external metal components near the ends of the tool that have smooth,
flat surfaces. Supports must avoid contact with slips, cones, packing element systems, thread profiles
and any components that have direct contact with o-rings and other seals such as pistons and hous-
ings/covers.
8 Inspection
Step Action
1. Check that the body lock ring is visible through the sight hole in the body lock ring housing.
2. Check that the brass shear screws are backed off 1/4 turn.
3. Check that the ODs of the packing elements and the threaded backup rings are lower than the
upper cone and lower cone.
4. Check that the wickers on the upper slips and lower slips are sharp and not damaged.
5. Ensure all screws are installed and below flush OD.
6. Drift ID of packer with drift bar called out in the assembly and test fixture tools list.
7. Check the maximum OD of the packer against tabulated values.
8. Install thread protectors to premium connections.
9 Test Procedures
Testing and Removal
Step Action
1. Make up the Test Plugs (T004) to the packer and Striker and Pressure Test (T005).
2. Remove the Test Plugs, Clamshell Housings, Clamshell Quarters Spacers and Pressure Testing
Housing.
Pressure Testing
Each Premier packer and Striker has its own test fixtures. Both test fixture assemblies must be in-
stalled for proper pressure testing.
10 Operation
Size
The Premier packers with Striker are sized with two 3-digit numbers. The first number denotes the OD
of the tool, and the second one denotes the minimum ID. For example: A 645-356 is a 6.450-in. OD
packer with a minimum ID of 3.565 inches.
InQuest TUBEMOVE/Performance Envelope Instructions
To use the performance envelope, the differential pressure and tubing forces at the packer must be
calculated using the InQuest TUBEMOVE™ program. To run the InQuest TUBEMOVE program for
this packer, input the seal diameter as given in the specification guide as the seal diameter and input
the tubing as being anchored into the packer. With the pressure and force at the packer calculated by
InQuest TUBEMOVE, consult the attached performance rating envelope to ensure that the plotted co-
ordinate (pressure, force) is inside the envelope.

Running Procedures
It is suggested that pup joints be made up above and below the packer for handling purposes. Run
the appropriate tubing tail pipe and make up the Premier packer to the top of the string. The tail pipe
assembly must contain a means to plug the tubing for the secondary actuation method. This may be
a Baker Hughes seating nipple or a shear-out plug. Run the packer into the well, slowly installing tub-
ing.
Primary Actuation (Hydrostatic)
The rupture disk of the Striker module is installed into the annulus side of the packer. To set the pack-
er, the absolute pressure of the well at the packer is increased to the specified value of the installed
disk and held for 15 minutes.
A minimum setting pressure of 7,000 psi is required to set the packer using the primary setting method,
Therefore, the minimum disk that can be installed has a 7,000-psi value. The maximum value of the
disk that can be installed has a value of 12,500 psi, due to the packer being rated to 13,500 psi. These
values take into account the tolerances of rupture disk burst pressures.
While pressuring the entire well to set the packer, an indication of packer setting can be achieved by
monitoring tubing and annulus pressure individually. On rupture of disk and packer setting while pres-
suring the well, tubing pressure will continue to rise while pressure in the annulus above the element
will remain constant giving an indication of packer setting.
Note: This option is only available if the well has not been perforated or pres-
sure can be applied against a barrier in the liner.
Step Action
1. The rupture disk of the Striker module will burst once its rating has been exceeded, allowing the
applied pressure to flood the lower atmospheric chamber.
2. The pressure will act across the lock dog retaining piston and push it upwards. The shear screws,
which hold the dog retainer in place, will shear due to this action.
Step Action
3. The lock dogs will then be able to unseat from their seating groove in the packer body, enabling
the setting piston to move upwards.
4. Continued application of the pressure will drive the setting piston up against the packoff parts of
the packer.
a button type slip, which anchors the tool during the cutting operation. Once the cutting operation is
completed the slips retract and the tool is free to be pulled from the well.
Once activated, the chemical cutter will cut cleanly through the packer mandrel allowing the packer
and tail pipe to be retrieved. In stacked packer applications, all the packers can be retrieved on the
production tubing simply by cutting all the packer mandrels.
Through-Tubing, Mechanical Cut
In restricted ID-type completions, coiled-tubing-conveyed mechanical cutting allows retrieval of the
Premier packer on the completion string. This cutting method must be predesigned into the original
completion as it requires the use of a through-tubing cutting extension (TCE). The TCE, placed above
the Premier packer, allows the cutting bottomhole assembly to locate and position itself across the cut-
ting zone of the packer.
A Baker Hughes DB underreamer should be run on an appropriately designed coiled tubing tool string
consisting of connector, dual flapper backpressure valve, hydraulic disconnect, dual actuated circula-
tion sub, adjustable no-go locating sub, mud motor, and DB underreamer. The adjustable no-go locat-
ing sub will be spaced out with the DB underreamer to place the cut in the required location. Care
should be given when running the bottomhole assembly to take accurate length, ID, and OD measure-
ments of the packer, pipe, and crossover connections. Enough space should be allowed above the
desired cutting area for the adjustable no-go locating sub to locate and still provide sufficient distance
for the mud motor and the DB underreamer.
The adjustable no-go locating sub is the only mechanism required to provide for set down weight of
the coiled tubing and accurate location of the DB underreamer and the subsequent cut of the packer
mandrel.
Once the cutting operation is completed, the cutting knives retract into the DB underreamer and the
entire bottomhole assembly is removed from the well.
In stacked packer applications, additional cuts will be required to sever all the packer mandrels before
the packers can be retrieved.
Milling Procedure
In the event the packer cannot be retrieved using standard retrieving procedures, the packer can be
milled over and retrieved.
A Type MJ™ Packer Retriever Tool (Product Family H14133) can be used in conjunction with a wash-
over assembly to burn over and retrieve the Premier packer in one trip. Run in the hole with the wash-
over assembly and appropriately sized METAL MUNCHER® milling shoe. Mill down to the slips or until
the packer moves downhole. Pull out of the hole with the washover assembly and recovered packer.

Flow wetted components: Components that can come in direct contact with the dynamic movement of well fluids
in the flow stream. (typically body and guide).
Internally wetted components: Flow wetted components plus components out of the flow stream, but they are
contacted by well fluids through a port or other passage to the flow wetted area (typically body, guide, upper setting
piston and secondary piston).
Exposed components: Flow wetted components plus internally wetted components plus components contacted
by well fluids below the packing element (typically all parts, please specify if this includes pack-off parts i.e., slips,
rings, cones).
Elastomers
Packing element
Note: Double O-rings are used on all atmospheric chambers. Nitrile is used as
the initial seal for low temperature sealing (i.e., while running downhole,
with the secondary seal being chosen to be compatible with the well en-
vironment.)
Performance ratings
Note: Rupture disk setting is what would actually be installed with regard to
burst value (psi) on the packer. Rupture disk range minimum-maximum
is based on the maximum value that can be installed due to the packers
chamber rating and the minimum value is based on the minimum load
to set the packing element.
Note: Secondary setting pressure is as a rule, kept to around the same pres-
sure as standard Premier packer hydraulic tubing set pressures for that
specific size.
