Concept of warning instructions
This manual contains instructions that must be observed for reasons of your personal safety and to prevent
property damages. The personal safety instructions are highlighted by a warning triangle whilst instructions
relating only to property damages are shown without the warning triangle. Depending on the relevant level of risk,
the warning instructions are shown as follows, in descending order.
DANGER
indicates that death or serious injury would occur if the appropriate precautionary measures are not taken.
WARNING
indicates that death or serious injury could occur if the appropriate precautionary measures are not taken.
CAUTION
indicates that slight injuries could occur if the appropriate precautionary measures are not taken.
ATTENTION
indicates that property damage could occur if the appropriate precautionary measures are not taken.
If more than one level of risk appears, the warning instruction with the highest level of risk must always be
observed. If a warning of personal injury is shown in a warning triangle, then an additional warning of property
damage can be shown in the same warning instruction.

Preamble
Products in the energy sector
Excitation equipment supplied without starting frequency converters is designated
as a single exciter or a single excitation system whilst excitation equipment supplied
with starting frequency converters is designated as a compact unit.
®
THYRIPOL is a static excitation system for synchronous generators and reactive
power equipment. It is suitable for use in gas-fired, steam, hydro-electric or nuclear
power plants as well as for transformers or reactive power equipment.
Due to its high adaptability to the applicable system conditions, it can be applied
advantageously in both new systems as well as for retrofitting existing systems.
With regard to dimensions, the systems are specially suited for space-saving
installation and for use in prefabricated container systems, although they can also be
installed in electrical switchgear rooms or machine rooms with upgraded degree of
protection for the cubicles.
Note
This operating and installation instruction comprises general product information.
For detailed information covering the single product components, please refer to the
specific manuals for the components in use.

For reasons of clarity, this documentation does not contain all of the detailed information
on all of the product types. This documentation cannot take into consideration every
conceivable type of installation, operation and maintenance.
If you require additional information or technical details for the documentation, contact
your local Siemens office.
We would also like to point out that the contents of this documentation are neither part of
nor modify any prior or existing agreement, commitment or contractual relationship. All
obligations on the part of Siemens arise from the relevant contract of sale, which also
contains the complete and solely valid warranty conditions. These contractual warranty
provisions are neither extended nor curbed as a result of the statements made in this
documentation.
WARNING
Unobserved information
Operating, servicing, maintaining or installing the static excitation equipment with and
without starting converter may result in property damage, serious injury, and even death
if the safety instructions are not observed.
You must strictly comply with all notes regarding intended use. Different operating
modes, overloads, load cycles, and differing ambient conditions are permitted only after
special arrangement with the manufacturer.
WARNING
Unqualified personnel
The system operates at a hazardous voltage level and contains dangerous rotating
machine parts (fans). Failure to comply with these operating instructions can lead to
death, serious injury and material damage.
Only qualified personnel are permitted to work on this system. Such personnel must be
thoroughly acquainted with all the warnings and maintenance procedures referred to in
these Operating Instructions.
Perfect, safe and reliable operation of the system assumes that it has been
professionally transported, stored, mounted and installed as well as correct operation
and servicing.
Note
Electrical equipment of protection class I
The cabinet system of the static excitation equipment (SEE) / compact system is
executed as electrical equipment (electrical system component) of protection class I.
Consequently, the cabinet system provides a basic insulation as basic protection
measure and a protective bonding (protective ground conductor) as fault protection
measure.
Operation is permitted, provided the THYRIPOL units are connected to the system with
appropriate protective ground conductors. The protective ground conductors must also
be connected with the grounding system of the plant (power plant). The required cross-
section of the protective ground conductor must conform with the national specifications
and regulations (e.g. EN 61800-5-1, EN 60204-1).
NOTICE
PELV circuits
Control circuits of the THYRIPOL system are executed as PELV (Protective Extra Low
Voltage) circuits. The voltage in these circuits does not exceed the maximum permitted
voltage of class DVC A (DVC in accordance with EN 61800-5-1). Consequently, these
circuits provide protection in the case of direct contact.
In turn, only PELV circuits that do not exceed the limit values of voltage class DVC A
may be connected to these circuits on the system.
ATTENTION
Malfunction due to radio traffic
When using mobile radio equipment with a transmitting power of >1 W in the immediate
vicinity of the equipment (<1.5 m), malfunctioning of the equipment can occur.
Adhere to the applicable limits.
Note
Ensure that the local safety regulations and national safety guidelines are observed and
complied with.
Line-side transformer
Not included in scope of supply. The medium voltage transformer limits the short-
circuit current in case of malfunction and has to be designed such that the maximum
permitted short-circuit current is not exceeded.
Specialist personnel
For all work in particular are the "five safety rules" must be observed:
1. Disconnect the system
2. Protect against reconnection
3. Verify isolation from supply
4. Ground and short-circuit
5. Cover or enclose adjacent live electrical parts
DANGER
Dangerous parts
During operation, static excitation equipment and starting converters can have live, and
possibly rotating, parts.
Unauthorized removal of required covers, improper use, or incorrect installation or
operation may lead to death, serious injury or material damage.
Always take protective measures before touching any components.
DANGER
Dangerous voltages
When handled improperly, or when the safety rules are not observed, dangerous high
voltages result in death or serious injury.
During operation of the excitation equipment or starting frequency converter very high
voltages occur, which can remain in existence for long periods of time even after
switching off or so long as the generator is still rotating.
In plant configurations with change over equipment ("cross-starting"), where a starting of
the generator via a further SFC is possible, dangerous reverse voltages arise even when
the system is switched off.
Always ensure that work is only performed by qualified personnel working under strict
observance of the five safety rules, the warning instructions included in this
documentation and the safety-related instructions.
DANGER
CAUTION
High temperatures
Certain components, such as the heat sink elements, smoothing reactors, auxiliary
transformers, thyristors, etc., become very hot during operation.
These components can also remain very hot for a period of time after operation.
If touched they can cause severe injury such as skin burns.
Do not touch hot components, even after switching off the excitation equipment or the
starting frequency converter.
CAUTION
WARNING
Hazardous arcing
Arcs can cause property damage, serious injury and even death.
The cabinets of the static excitation equipment with/without starting frequency converter
are not designed arc proof.
Input currents above the maximum limit, incorrectly dimensioned circuit-breakers or
transformers, and incorrectly connected or unconnected cables can result in danger due
to electric arcs in the event of a fault.
Make sure that the system is properly dimensioned and that the power cables are
correctly connected.
• Observe the relevant nationally applicable health and safety regulations or the
applicable national regulations in the country of installation. In Germany,
"electromagnetic fields" are subject to regulations BGV B11 and BGR B11 stipulated
by the German statutory industrial accident insurance institution.
• Display adequate hazard warning notices on the installation.
WARNING
Preconditions
The person responsible for system safety must ensure that:
1. Basic planning work and all work associated with transportation, assembly,
installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair is only performed by
qualified personnel or by the responsible specialist personnel.
2. The complete product documentation is always available during
performance of all work.
3. The technical data and specifications regarding the permissible assembly,
connection, ambient and operating conditions are observed.
4. Plant-specific construction and safety directives as well as personal
protection procedures are observed.
5. Work on these devices or in the vicinity thereof by unqualified persons is
prohibited.
For this reason the product documentation only contains the instructions necessary
for proper use of the machines by qualified personnel.
Note
Support by Siemens
We recommend engaging the support and services of your local Siemens service center
for all planning, installation, commissioning and maintenance work.
WARNING
Observe switch-off times if a fault occurs
Switch-off times that exceed these limit values can cause accidents, and so possibly
cause death or major material damage.
If, after detection of an insulation fault (insulation resistance less than the permitted limit
value) or ground fault (one-pole short-circuit of a phase to ground) by an insulation
monitoring system the plant does not switch off immediately, a personnel protection on
the exciter equipment or compact system is not guaranteed.
ESD guidelines
ATTENTION
Electrostatic discharge
Electronic components that are improperly stored, transported and shipped can become
damaged.
Package electronic components in suitable conductive materials, such as foam rubber
or household aluminium foil.
Electronic components must be stored, transported and shipped in conductive
packaging.
The necessary ESD protection measures are elucidated once again in the following
illustration:

For the safe operation of a plant, however, it is also necessary to integrate the automation
components into an overall IT security concept for the entire plant, which corresponds to the state-
of-the-art IT technology. You can find information on this under: Industrial Security
(http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity).
Products used from other manufacturers should also be taken into account here.
ATTENTION
Unauthorized spare parts
Third-party spare parts and unapproved spare parts may not meet the requirements of the
manufacturer.
The use of third-party spare parts can impair the system function and result in property damage.
Use only spare parts approved by the manufacturer.
Note
Strictly observe the prescribed maintenance intervals, as well as the instructions for repair and
replacement of components.

EN 60721-3-3
Table 1-2 References, test standards
A compact unit comprises the three sections, open- and closed-loop control, power
part and starting frequency converter.
For functional and rated voltage (max. 1000 V AC, 1500 V DC) reasons, the control
and excitation equipment cabinets are assigned to the low-voltage regulation. The
starting converter, and so the compact system as complete system, lies outside the
validity of the low-voltage regulations with regard to its low voltage and must be
considered as being type-tested components/resources declared as conform.
Consequently, a conformance declaration in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17050-1
standard is prepared for the compact system.
2 Description
Once the starting frequency converter has been disconnected and a speed of
approximately 90% of the synchronous speed has been reached, standard excitation
mode is enabled.
Interaction between the starting frequency converter and the excitation system
In order to run a gas turbine set up to its operating speed the turbine requires starting
assistance in the form of a starting frequency converter.
During the starting phase the generator is supplied with power from the starting
frequency converter and it operates as a frequency-controlled synchronous motor.
After successful firing, at approx. 70 % of the rated speed, the converter shuts down
and the generator set is accelerated by the turbine alone.
Using the option "changeover device" (see chapter 6.15) several turbine sets can be
run up sequentially using one starting frequency converter.
For reasons of availability, a maximum of 6 gas turbine sets can be combined with 3
compact units and 3 single excitation units.
Optional:
● Pointer instruments, e. g. for generator voltage Ug, generator current Ig and
frequency fg as well as field voltage Uf and field current If
● 4 to 8 indicator lights
The fully redundant design of the open-loop and closed-loop control section allows
the changeover between the two channels in case of malfunction.
The closed-loop control section is designed as a voltage control (automatic operation)
that can be switched over to field current control (manual operation).
If necessary a reactive power or cosφ control can be superimposed.

3.3 Transport
The compact units and single excitations are intended for installation in a container
or for installation in a machine room. As shown in the dimension drawing, the
compact unit is supplied in at least two transport units; see the dimension drawing
specific to the installation. The disconnection point lies between the SFC power
section and the control cabinet on the exciter side. Single excitations under a weight
of 5 tonnes can be delivered as one transport unit.
In the structural design of the cabinet groups, attention has been given to providing
the smallest possible footprint at the specified maximum height. In the case of
transportation by truck for container accommodation, and transportation of the
finished container to the truck or ship, no parts are fitted or dismantled, with the
exception of the roof fans, which are dismantled as standard.
Temperature Transport
The following transport types are ● All types of truck and trailers in areas with a good
permitted: network of road systems
● Ships
● Goods wagons on rails with impact-absorbing
devices
● Fork-lift trucks for loading and unloading
● Aircraft
The tip-indicator (TIP-N-TELL) monitors if the transportation unit was handeled and
shipped in upright position, as it is specified. If the transportation unit was tipped, the
arrowhead is colored.
WARNING
Danger due to improper shipping
The transport units must not be dropped or tipped.
Improper transport, using of inadequate tools or acces of unauthorized persons can
result in accidents and consequently to death, serious personal injury or property
damage.
Always ensure that just qualified personnel move the transport units with approved
haulage means and chain hoist.
WARNING
Danger due to improper chain hoist
Damaged, to short or weight basis undersized ropes and crane straps must not be
used. Violation may in death and serious personal injury or property damage.
Make sure that the used ropes and crane straps are properly dimensioned.
Note
Center of gravity
The position of the centre of gravity can be taken from the dimension drawing, or is
identified by stickers placed on the transport units during packaging in the factory.
Pipe > 60 mm × 8 mm with circular hollow section in accordance with DIN EN 10220-
60x8-S235JR
Use four crane straps of equal length and a crane hook beam for stable lifting of the
cabinet. Insert appropriately long crane belts so that no force is exerted to the walls
of the transport unit when under load. End caps fastened on the pipes increase
safety when carried.
Maximum separation of the belts to the same pipe: Belt center to belt center = 1250
mm.
ATTENTION
4 Assembly
In the following sections, it is presumed that we are dealing with the assembly of
switchgear that is not connected to the mains and is thus voltage-free.
ATTENTION
Dirt on the installation can lead to functional faults during operation
Avoid all work that leads to dirt on the switchgear (e.g. sawing, filing, etc.)
Note
Grid
The fans must not be mounted the wrong way round (by 180°).
The fan located on the front side has to be connected with the upper differential
pressure sensor. If the option “redundant fans” is used, the fan located on the rear
side has to be connected with the lower differential pressure sensor. The air pipe has
to be connected wit P2 (lower pressure). The connection P1 is not used. The
numbering of the fans -E40x has to correspond with the differential pressure sensor
numbering -F40x.
● Help is provided by the arrangement drawing for the power module, correctly
showing in the front view the equipment identifiers with odd numbers (e.g.: -E401,
-E403, -E405) and even numbers in the back view (e.g.: -E402, -E404, -E406).
● If the tubing to the differential pressure sensor is too short, this indicates that the
fan is fitted the wrong way round.

CAUTION
Risk of a short-circuit
Improper installation or damaged cables can cause property damage or even personal
injuries.
The cables must be completely intact and installed properly.
Please make sure that in the case of the power cables no short circuits can occur as a
result of insulation problems caused by improper wire installation.

Note
The cables connected to the control cabinet are passed through the cutout (sealed with
rubber grommets) into the SFC cabinet.
If necessary, the edge protection of the opening must be removed for assembly and then
replaced.
5.3.2.1 Electrical connection between the starting frequency converter and the
control cabinet
5.3.2.2 Electrical supply line between static frequency converter and SEE auxiliary
cubicle
The cable to supply the SFC auxiliarys with power from the excitation system cabinet
is already prepared inside the SFC. The cable end that is prepared in the right-side
SFC cabinet shall be layed to the corresponding terminals in the auxiliary cabinet of
the excitation equipment according the following instructions:
Feed the cable through the opening in the left corner in the control cabinet. Lay the
cable inside the bottom cable tray to the left side of the control cabinet.
Figure 5-8 and Figure 5-9: Laying of the supply line to the control cabinet
Figure 5-10: Cable bushing from control cabinet into the auxiliary cabinet
Lay the cable to the backside of the auxiliary cabinet and fix it on the cabinet frame.
Connect the cable end to the corresponding terminals according the information
given in the circuit diagram.
5.3.2.3 Electrical connection between the power module of the exciter installation
and the AC feed (option)
● The electricity is connected through clearly identified and coded plug-in
connections. One exception is the cable for cabinet illumination; this must be
connected directly to the light.
● The conducting rails are connected using a bridge rail. The bridge rail is supplied
ready mounted, so it only has to be screwed onto one side. The bolts for this are
included in the cabinet as assembly accessories.
Note
The transport units must be aligned carefully before assembly so that the conducting
rails can be screwed down easily.
ATTENTION
Note
The impending “blocked” message points to an error message or to a protection-off
signal.
If no or several positions are selected in parallel (e.g., wire breakage, short circuit),
the message “Defect of the key-operated switch no status message” will be displayed
at the OP177B. In addition, a group message will be sent to the control station.
If the switching of the key-operated switch from one position to another takes longer
than 1 s (parameterizable value) (e.g. due to hang-up or for mechanical reasons),
then the switch position will be assumed as “undefined”.
In case of a fault, the controller then specifies the following depending on the
momentary operating mode:
Coming from the control station, the command "Excitation OFF" is only active, if the
"Generator is in no-load operation", that is, not connected to the network AND
"not on an auxillary circuit ".
The following table shows the status of the respective keys of the OP177B in switch
position NORMAL:
The actual value displays at the OP177B, whose values are continuously updated,
can be selected at any time in the switch position NORMAL via the appropriate keys.
In this position of the key-operated switch, only the Screenshot of messages and
measured values at the operator panel is possible. The control takes place
exclusively from the control station.
In addition, error messages are output. Error messages can only be acknowledged at
the local control station.
The operation as well as the Screenshot of setpoint and actual values takes place by
means of the control station installed in the cabinet door (and optionally via the analog
instruments).
The control station has a touchscreen display to display the setpoint and actual values
and messages as well as a series of functions and light-emitting diodes for the
operation of the system and for status display. The generator voltage setpoint value (in
the case of AUTOMATIC operation) or field voltage setpoint value (in the case of
MANUAL operation) can be changed in this key-operated switch position at the
OP177B in steps or by means of direct input of a number value, see chapter 7.2.2

Operating and installation Instruction Static Excitation Equipment with/without Starting Frequency Converter
06.2014
The digital voltage control (Figure 6-11) is designed for the open-loop and closed-
loop control of static excitation equipment for generators. It is used both in single
excitations as well as within the compact unit with a starting frequency converter.
The digital voltage controller can optionally be set up with 2 channels Figure 2-2.
Both channels are identical and under normal operating conditions operate as
closed-loop voltage controllers in automatic mode. If required (i.e. during
commissioning, service or in special cases) they can be switched over to field-
current-controlled operation (manual mode).
The channels are electrically isolated and have their own power supplies, so that it is
possible to disable one channel, for example, when servicing or repairing equipment.
Either channel 1 or channel 2 is only ever active for controlling the excitation power
section; the active channel is selected via the operator operator panel. When the
channel is selected, the associated firing pulses and the field-circuit actual values are
also switched over at the channel outputs. The passive channel is tracked in all
modes, thus ensuring a smooth transition on channel changeover (at all operating
points).
For the purpose of communication with instrumentation and control, bus interfaces
are provided or all corresponding binary inputs and outputs are connected to both
channels via interface modules (HW link option).
Data transfer between the channels and the starting frequency converter’s open-loop
and closed-loop control is implemented via a Profibus DP link.
If starting frequency converters are used to start up several generators,
communication between the compact units and the individual excitation units is
implemented via a bus system. If starting frequency converters are used to start up
several generators, the communication between the compact unit and single
excitations takes place via a separate bus connection. The starting frequency
converter is then prompted to start up the turbine set associated with a particular
static excitation unit by means of a message sent via the bus system.
6.6.4.1 Switch on and Switch off Conditions of the Reactive power joined control
Switching on
The command for the activation of the RPJC comes from the control room as a pulse
(11MKC01DE116A XT01 = command RPJC ON) and is messageed to the control room after the
activation takes place (11MKC01DE116H XG01).
Switching on from the control station on the cabinet (Operation Panel) is not intended, however
the status of the RPJC (on, off, active) can be seen on the OP.
In principle, to switch on the RPJC, the generator must be on the grid and the exciter unit must be
either in the “generator voltage controller” or “Q-control” operating mode. For the operation of the
RPJC, not all participating generators must be in the same operating mode (generator voltage
controller or Q-control).
Switching off
The command to deactivate the RPJC comes from the control room as a pulse
(11MKC01DE116B XT02 = command RPJC off) or is formed due to internal conditions in
accordance with Figure 6-12. The RPJC function is automatically switched off with the activation
of the local operation through the operation of the key-operated switch on the corresponding unit.
The signal “RPJC - fault communication other unit” becomes active if a life bit (11MKC01DE116Z
XG01) can not be received from any other exciter unit participating in the RPJC.

processing.
Range monitoring
If the frequency drops below the frequency parameterized in component E10, the
V/f-limitation reduces the setpoint voltage value within the limits proportional to the
frequency parameterized on components A600.X and A605.X. In unlocked operating
mode, the V/f-limitation is lifted and the setpoint voltage value is limited to the value
parameterized on components A610.X and A615.X.
The V/f-limitation is released on component E25.I (0→1)

Signal inputs
The actual power value, under certain circumstances the actual rotation speed value
or the compensated frequency are read in and decoded for further processing. Using
analog input on the CUD1 terminal X174.6,7 (see description chapter 6.8) a test
signal can be fed in (release on component A175.I→1).
Control logic
If the PSS is switched on (component P70), it is only active if the minimum effective
power Pmin (component C60) is exceeded, the generator is on the grid and the
automatic mode is active. If the effective power drops below Pmin again, it becomes
inactive after a delay time set on component C50.T; if the effective power rises again
via Pmin, it only becomes active again after the delay parameterized a C40.T.
If the effective power drops below Pmin and simultaneously the generator voltage
drops below the value parameterized in component C30.M, then this is interpreted as
a short circuit and the PSS only remains active for a maximum of the time
parameterized on C50.T. To counter a disruptive influence in case of faults of the
actual rotation speed values, the rotation speed influence on the PSS signal (as far
as parameterized on A70.I=1) is deactivated below a threshold value nmin
(component C200). Using the “Power system stabilizer in intervention” signal (signal
to control room: 11MKC01 DE104C XG01; signaling on the panel through a flashing
LED), it is possible to detect whether an intervention of the PSS exists.

Signal inputs
The required setpoint, actual and tracking values are read in. Also, several
parameterizations are carried out: the parametrisation for effective current and
reactive current-dependent statics/compensation on components U90.X2 and
U70.X2, the parametrisation for a fixed threshold value of the stator current limitation
on component A730.X and the parametrisation for DC converter and AC converter
limits in automatic and start-up operating mode on components A735.X, A740.X and
A742.X.
Voltage control
If a starting frequency converter is present, during the start-up operation a
connection of the actual voltage value formed in the starting frequency converter
takes place on component U130 and the adjustment of different standardizations of
the actual voltage value in the starting frequency converter and in the excitation
takes place on component U135. In the start-up operation, for safety reasons the
control is in relation to the maximum of both voltage actual values (component
U140), with the actual values being decoupled somewhat with regard to their
unavoidable ripple (PT1-link; component U145) via the value parameterized on
component U125.X2.
The stator current limitation is taken into account on component U160 in the form of
an increase in setpoint value (under-excited) or reduction in setpoint value (over-
excited) and an additive connection of an reactive current or effective current-
dependent statics/compensation share, a subsequent limitation on component U170
in accordance with the parameterized control range in the setpoint plan, as is the
DELTA-U-formation on component U200, i.e. the formation of the error variable and
under certain circumstances a reduction through the over-excitation limitation. The
under-excitation limiter intervenes via component U410 on the voltage controller
component U500. The setting of the proportional amplification of the voltage
controller, in which different values can be specified for the start-up operation and
the actual generator operation via the U190 selection switch, also takes place on
component U200.
The voltage controller in manual mode is tracked according to the control process
(replicated with components U310 to U340) via the set inputs in such a way that a
smooth transition can take place in automatic mode. In the passive channel with
redundant controllers, the tracking takes place via component U450 within a narrow
bandwidth from the output signal of the voltage controller of the active channel.
The output of the DELTA-U-formation (Figure 6-20) is initially transmitted to the
intervention point (addition component U490) for the power system stabilizer via a
MAX-selection (components U410 and U430) in which the voltage controller is
triggered during an intervention of the under-excitation limiter, i.e. except for
intervention. There the output of the power system stabilizers that was evaluated via
the component U195 with the KP of the voltage controller is added. The sum from
component U490 is then immediately transmitted to the input of the voltage regulator
component U500.
The reset time of the voltage controller can be set in different ways via the selection
switch U460, depending on whether it is a case of start-up operation or normal
generator operation.

Signal processing
The output of the ramp function generator component Q200 corresponds to the
reactive power setpoint value in the parametrisation of the superimposed control as
reactive power regulation. In the switched off condition the ramp function generator is
tracked to the superimposed control via the set input so that a smooth switch over is
always warranted. This applies equivalently for the cosφ setpoint value encoder
COS200 and the setpoint value encoder BAR200 of the reactive power joined
control.
A change of the corresponding setpoint value takes place via the read higher / lower
commands or in the case of analog command value provision through tracking of the
setpoint value encoder to the specified analog setpoint value.
The cosφ-control internally automatically sets itself to setpoint value cosφ =1 if the
generator drops below 20% of its rated value, since an exact cosφ-calculation is then
no longer possible. It independently switches itself back on after the time
parameterized on component A60.T, if the threshold value for minimum current is
exceeded again and its On-command is still pending.
A setpoint/actual value comparison on component Q300 or COS300 or BAR310
generates set point commands for the generator voltage setpoint value encoder; an
external command value provision is disabled in this case.
Signal processing
The rotor temperature is calculated via a resistance calculation from the excitation
current and exciter voltage. For this, the reference data are to be registered on
components TEMP30 (field resistance in ohm) and TEMP18 (reference temperature
in °C). The rated field resistance is to be indicated in ohm on component TEMP10.
In addition, two threshold values that are parameterizable in TEMP100 and
TEMP130 can be set. The release of these threshold values takes place in
TEMP90.I
For a field current that is too small, the rotor temperature to be calculated is set to
20°C (component TEMP15.X1).
Signal processing
● Phase monitoring of the generator voltage
The voltage zero phase-sequence system is monitored for the values
parameterized in FP-PQ_ALPHA-BETA C102.M being exceeded. If these
values are exceeded in both channels, it is assumed to be real (e.g.
single-phase short circuit); otherwise it is interpreted as a phase dropout
of the voltage detection in the channel in which the value was exceeded.
Due to the finite transmission speed of the values from the other channel
via PEER TO PEER communication between both channels, a sufficient
tolerance (parameterized on the U170.T component) is required.
● Maximum value monitoring of the generator voltage
The exceeding of the maximum permissible voltage in the start-up
operation (parameterized on component R410.X2) is signaled to the
component F360.Q without delay.
● Ceiling current / field current monitoring (over-excitation)
If the limited influence of the over-excitation limitation longer than the time
parameterized on component R520.T is not sufficient to get the voltage
controller to intervene again, this is signaled to the component F370.Q.
● Ceiling voltage / field voltage monitoring
An exceeding of the maximum permissible ceiling voltage (protection
against unwanted full conduction of the current converter) is on the one
hand signaled as a monitoring of the field voltage itself (parameterized on
component U110M for the time parameterized on component U120.T), on
the other hand also as an exceeding of the firing angle (parameterized on
component U140.M for the time parameterized on component U150.T) to
the component F330.Q.
● Field current monitoring in turning-gear operation
An exceeding of the field current during turning-gear operation by the
value parameterized on component R530.M and for the time
parameterized on component R550.T to component F390.Q.
● Discrepancy monitoring between channel 1 and 2
Disparities in both channels are monitored if a coupling between the
following values exists:
– Firing angle of the current converters (threshold value on component
U180.X, tolerance time on component U210.X parameterized) on
component F420.Q
– Field voltage actual values (threshold value on component R595.X,
tolerance time on component R630.T parameterized) on component
F400.Q
– Field current actual values (threshold value on component R640.X,
tolerance time on component R690.T parameterized) on component
F410.Q.
● Other system and hardware faults
Faults already detected on CUD 1, such as fuse failure, HW error in the
range of the field actual value recordings, under-voltages, development
faults etc., are handled.
A group message is generated on components F4000 and F4050. Here
only errors from the T400 and the CUD1 are processed. If a channel error
occurs in the active channel, a channel switchover is carried out.

In the operating hour-dependent mode, during a start the fan with fewer operating
hours is put in operation to ensure an even wear of the fans.
In the alternating mode, the fans are changed at every start and either both front or
both rear fans are activated.
The fans can be manually switched over at any time using the control station. After a
fan exchange, the operating hours on the control station are to be set to zero. During
this, the date of the reset is stored and shown on the panel. When reaching a
previous parameterized threshold value after completed fan operating hours (the
expected lifecycle of the fan) a message is sent to the control station and a warning
is sent to the control room so that the can be receive preventative maintenance or be
exchanged. Optionally, an automatic switching-over after a certain runtime can be
activated. This option is only to be parameterized and released in the program by
trained personnel.
The operation of the starting frequency converter takes place exclusively from the
control room via the visualization interface of the instrumentation and control.
The local control station AOP30 is used only for commissioning and diagnosic
activities at the converter.
The options of the starting frequency converter are described in the SINAMICS
GL150 manual, see chapter 7.

Figure 6-25 Block diagram of the open and closed loop-control of the starting freqency converter
In "Normal start", "Black start" and "Phase shift start" or "Braking" operation modes,
the starting frequency converter automatically switches off after reaching the
respective starting speed or standstill. Otherwise, the shutdown occurs after reaching
the previously parameterized operating time.
Upon reaching the firing speed, the gas mixture is ignited and the turbine is
accelerated to rated speed
Upon separating the starting frequency converter and reaching a synchronous speed
of about 90%, the message "Speed> 90%" is generated and the excitement will be
ready to switch on.
If a generator voltage reaches 90%, the synchronizing will turn on followed by the
adjustment of the generator voltage to supply voltage or hardware-island network on
higher / lower commands of the synchronization.
Successful synchronization of the generator voltage to the mains / island network is
followed by the switching of the island and high-voltage generator power switch to
the mains through synchronization device.

Signal exchange is ensured through FDL bus coupling between the controllers of the
excitation systems of various compact units and single excitations of gas turbine
generators.
The excitation system of the setpoint turbo set assumes the "master" function.
The excitation system evaluates the responses of the changeover disconnectors to
the starting bar and selects the appropriate starting frequency converter.
The control of the selected SFC is designed for:
● the internal SFC-output disconnector
● the SFC-power switch (also with no switch unit available)
In the case of the FDL-bus coupling malfunction the compact unit assigned turbine
sets can still be activated, since the communication between SFC and the excitation
system is maintained internally.

AC Contactor
DC Contactor
The self excitation generates the necessary energy for the first field flash via a
separate AC supply, an adaption transformer and a rectifier. The AC-supply is
powered by auxiliary station supply of the power plant.
The SIMOREG DC-Master displays operating mode o10.0 in the beginning. When
the command for switching on the excitation is given, the Simatic control system
switches on the AC- as well as the DC-field flashing contactors. Now the current in
the field circuit increases according the time constant of the field winding which
proportionally lets the generator output voltage increase. The excitation transformer
transforms the generator voltage to the required incoming voltage level of the
excitation system. After the On-command to the SIMOREG DC-Master the device
changes into operation mode o4.0 and waits for voltage. The main rectifier pulses
are released when the generator voltage has reached 10% of its nominal voltage.
The field flashing is turned off, when the generator voltage has reached 13% of the
nominal voltage and the main rectifier has took over the powering of the field circuit.
Note
If there is no, or too less voltage on the excitation incoming terminals after 10
seconds and so the main rectifier could not take over the field powering, the
field flashing is turned off and an error message is signaled.
The mentioned values are standard settings and are adapted project-specific
according to the field circuit.
ATTENTION
As with mains start, a start-up process is carried out with the gas turbine ignited, but with an
extended start-up time, ta. In black start operation, only the operating modes "Black start" and
"Vent boiler" are possible in the start-up converter.
Once the turbine is up to speed to the extent that it can be ignited and can provide the torque
required for further acceleration itself, the start-up converter is switched off.
Voltage build-up takes place again via the black start feed. Once the generator voltage has
reached 80% of the nominal voltage, a switch to the main feed takes place, with a short
interruption.
The two feed switches that are housed in the exciter device, the black start switch and the main
feed switch, are monitored and controlled by the exciter device and are secured against one
another in terms of hardware and software.

Figure 6-29: Single Line with excitation connected to main generator lead
For the design as shown in Figure 6-29, where the excitation system is connected
directly to the main generator lead, a second infeed from the 400V busbar is required
which powers the excitation via a matching transformer and a circuit breaker S2.
These components are housed in a separate cubicle and are not part of delivery of
the excitation equipment.
The start signal for “electrical braking” mode comes from the I&C, where also the
making conditions (switch positions, generator voltage etc.) are checked. The
generator circuit breaker, the primary circuit breaker of the braking transformer S3 as
well as the short circuit equipment S4 is controlled be the I&C only (considering
appropriate hardware interlockings). The control part of the excitation equipment
checks the feedback of the rectifier circuit breaker S1, the short circuit equipment S4
as well as of the secondary circuit breaker of the braking transformer S2. The
rectifier circuit breaker S1 must be in off-position and the short circuit equipment S4
must be in on-position. All monitoring facilities of the excitation equipment are active.
When all conditions are fulfilled, the excitation changes to “electrical breaking” mode
what is also signaled to the I&C. If the manual mode hasn’t been activated yet, the
excitation control system changes into excitation current regulation mode (ECR).
When all pre-conditions concerning powering the power section are fulfilled, the
circuit breaker S2 will be switched on by the excitation control system. Now the ECR
feeds the field circuit with a fixed adjusted excitation current, that’s setpoint (variable
parameter, specified for each plant ), until the command for stopping “electrical
braking” mode is sent by the I&C. Then the excitation current is controlled to zero
and the secondary circuit breaker of the braking transformer S2 is switched off.

Furthermore:
● If AUTOMATIC is switched to MANUAL, the field-current command value is set to
zero.
● In the operating mode AUTOMATIC, with "Excitation ON", the start-up sensor set-
value of the actual exciter current is switched to 0 %.
● Resetting the function UNLOCKED OPERATION is carried out by activation of the
button "UNLOCKED" (only on the Touchscreen in the screen settings) or by
switching the key-operated switch to Normal operation.
Note
The special screens are a topic exclusively for commissioning or service personnel of
Siemens and may not be used in "normal" operation.
In order to suppress this, the screens created for the commissioning or service purposes
are protected by a password and, thus, not accessible to the usual operating personnel.
Basically the UTC time (Universal Time Coordinated) is sent from the I&C to both
PLCs. The UTC time is a defined word time and therefore equal all over the world.
The local time is defined via a time zone entry and a summer/normal time switchover
point (Figure 8-3).
The OP177 panel time will be synchronized with the master time automatically. The
time master can either be the I&C (IC) or channel 1 (PLC 1). Figure 8-1 shows the
I&C as time master. Via the button “IC-timePLC” the I&C will be set as time
master and synchronizes the channel 1, channel 2 and OP177 time automatically
every minute.
The button “PLC” sets the time master to channel 1 and synchronizes the channel 2
and OP177 time automatically every minute. Channel 1 and 2 always show the local
time and the I&C shows the UTC time.
If channel 1 is time master, you can enter the local time (Figure 8-2).
Note
By entering the local time, you have to set the clock to normal time.
This means in summer time minus 1 hour has to be set and in normal time equal time
has to be set. In summer time 1 hour will be added automatically.
By pressing the time Screenshot of channel 1 the keypad to enter the time appears.
After setting, confirm using ENTER.
If you want to change the time zone or the summer – normal switchover points, you have to press
the <F8> button in the time sync Figure 8-2.
In the first line in Figure 8-3 the time zone can be selected in a drop down menu.
The time zone can be set from GMT -12 up to GMT +12 hours. This drop down menu disappears,
when the button “PLC” in Figure 8-2 is pressed and the PLC is time master.
By setting channel 1 (PLC 1) as time master, you have no time zone calculation.
The switchover points for “Normal to Summer Time” and “Summer to Normal Time”
are defined by four entry parameters. The following inputs are necessary for the calculation of the
local time:
Month
Limit: 1 - 12
Week of Month
Limit: 1 - 4 and 9
Can be selected between1 to 4, by a kind of a 5th week it must be defined with 9. 9 means the
last week of the month.
th th
Last week means the switch over point from year to year can be fall on the 4 or on the 5 week.
Day of Week
Limit: 1 - 7
Begin Sunday =1 and Saturday=7
Hour
Limit: 1 – 24
Only full hours can be selected.
The local time will be calculated with the selected switch over points.
The local time will be calculated without the selected switch over points.
The entry of the switchover points is blocked and no switchover between Summer and Normal
time happens.

9 Maintenance manual
Definition
Maintenance is defined as follows:
"Combination of all technical and administrative measures and measures of the
management throughout the lifecycle of a unit with the purpose to retain or restore its
working condition so that it can carry out the required functions"
"Maintenance can be split up completely into the basic measures service, inspection,
repair, improvement and weak point analysis."
Inspection
"Measures used to determine and appraise the actual state of a unit including the
determination of reasons for wear and the derivation of required consequences for
the future use."
Service
"Measures used to delay the reduction of the available share to wear."
Repair
"Measures used to return a unit into a working state, except for improvements."
Improvement
"Combination of all technical and administrative measures and measures of the
management with the purpose to increase the functional safety of a unit without
changing the function required from it".
Note
This maintenance instruction is part of the system documentation.
In addition to this maintenance instruction, the manuals and documentations of the
single devices or parts must be used for all tasks.
Only correspondingly trained personnel are allowed to carry out service and
maintenance work.
The following safety notes refer to all tasks described in chapter 9 Maintenance
manual.
After the completion of the tasks, these measures must be cancelled in reverse
order.
Dangerous voltage
After the static exciter unit with or without starting frequency converter has been
switched off, dangerous voltages exceeding 1000V may occur in the device as long as
the generator is still rotating.
These may lead to death, personnel injuries and considerable property damage.
Always ensure that for all works on site the safety-related instructions and the "five
safety rules" must be observed.
ATTENTION
Note
Comply with the mandatory maintenance intervals and the instructions for the repair
and replacement of components.
Note
DANGER
Dangerous voltage
After switching off of the main power supply of the excitation system (3WL-circuit-
breaker) on the "Flash" labeled wires dangerous voltage can be present. It is
supplied from an external power supply.
Discharge of capacitors
WARNING
Dangerous voltages
After the mains voltage has been switched off, voltages still exist at the static excitation
equipment with or without starting frequency converter. These may lead to death or
personnel injuries.
Before starting the service or repair work, comply with the discharge time of the
capacitors of five minutes after switching of the mains voltage and do not touch the
device in this period.
Measure the voltage after the discharging time.
Electrostatic discharge
The electronic modules contain components susceptible to electrostatic discharge.
These components can be easily destroyed if not handled properly. If you have to work
with electronic modules, please note:
• Never touch electronic components unless absolutely necessary in the course of
service activities.
• If electronic components must be touched, your body must be electrostatically
discharged first.
• Electronic components must not come into contact with highly electrically insulating
materials, such as plastic parts, insulating table supports, articles of clothing
manufactured from synthetic fibers.
• Components must always be placed on conductive bases.
• Modules and components should only be stored and transported in conductive
packaging (such as metalized plastic boxes or metal containers).
• If the packaging material is not conductive, the modules must be wrapped with a
conductive packaging material (such as conductive foam rubber or household
aluminum foil).
The required ESD protective measures are explained again in the following image:
① Sitting
② Standing
③ Standing/sitting
a conductive floor surface, only effective in conjunction with ESD shoes or
ESD shoe grounding strips
b ESD furniture
c ESD shoes or ESD shoe grounding strips are only effective in

Figure 9-1: ESD protective measures
Use a three-pole grounding device for fixed ball points to ground the static excitation
equipment with or without starting frequency converter. The maximum short circuit
current that can be carried with the 90° angled grounding bolts is given with 13.8kA for
1 second.
Note
DANGER
In a plant configuration with change over equipment ("cross-starting"), where a starting of
the generator via a further SFC is possible, dangerous reverse voltages arise even if the
system is switched off.
Always ensure that work is only performed by qualified personnel working under strict
observance of the five safety rules, the warning instructions included in this
documentation and the safety-related instructions.
Grounding device
Procedure:
• Secure the terminals of the grounding spider to the ground connection and
the ball heads of the three phases in the power cabinets.
• Connect the grounding device in such a way as to prevent the cabinet doors
from closing.
Figure 9-4: Door limit switches for switching off the system when the doors are opened in
operation (example: design in SITOR module technology)
WARNING
Inspection and service must be carried out according to a plan which is adjusted to
the particular environmental conditions of the operating location.
The following notes regarding inspection and service are the basis for the generation
of an inspection and service plan for the regular inspection and servicing of the
system which is adapted to the environmental conditions of the operating locations.

The service hours of the door fan are not monitored or counted in the open-loop
control.
9.4.3 Cleaning
Ventilation
Always keep the vents of the cabinet clear.
A correct functioning of the fans must be ensured.
Note
The actual periods in which the maintenance tasks must be repeated depend on the
mounting conditions (cabinet environment) and the operating conditions.
Siemens provides the option to enter into a maintenance contract. You can obtain
information from your branch or sales support.
ATTENTION
Unsuitable cleaning agents for aluminum parts
The same applies to cleaning cloths and brushes that can be used to work on copper,
brass or other heavy metal since these can apply metallic, corrosion-promoting
contaminations to the aluminum.
It is forbidden to use brushes made of brass, bronze or steel wire and cloths
interwoven with copper and steel wool.
Note
The actual periods in which the maintenance tasks must be repeated depend on the
mounting conditions (cabinet environment) and the operating conditions.
Siemens provides the option to enter into a maintenance contract.
You can obtain information from your branch or sales support.
9.5 Repair
Note
If the open-loop and closed-loop control cabinet is switched off, data on the error
message statuses may be lost.
Note
If you return defective components, also include the following information:
● A description of the failure
● Operating point, power and voltage
● Time and duration of the failure
● The log file with the error messages
● If possible, a hard copy of the plotter or screen shots
● The place of the installation.
Also include the device tag.
Security-related checks
WARNING
Check of the cable insulation
Incorrectly laid or damaged cables and incorrectly mounted cable screens can be
warmed up and lead to burnings or short circuits if they are contacted.
● Check if all cable screens are intact and insulate fault locations.
● Make sure that in the case of power cables, no short circuit can occur due to a
failure of the insulation as a result of incorrectly laid cables.
General information
The fans must be replaced in good time to keep the safe function of the cabinet unit.
For the actual service life of the fans, see chapter 9.4.2.
CAUTION
ATTENTION
Procedure:
1. Remove the bolts from the airguide plate
ATTENTION
Tools
