Career Plan Essay for Chevening

Neurological disorders are increasing year by year. Diseases in the nervous system will be more
affecting people in the elderly. World Health Organization stated that the prevalence prediction of
dementia will be 81,1 million by 2040, it is doubled in amount from the prevalence in 2005. Besides,
one of the major neurological diseases, stroke is the top three common cause of death in most
countries. If we do not take these problems comprehensively, I believe the prediction would happen
or it can be worse. Departing from this topic, I desire to be involved in developing research and
clinical application of neuroscience to treat neurological diseases for people around the world.

Firstly, I will continue my study to gain knowledge and experience in neuroscience in the UK which
has excellent facilities and educational system. My short-term plan after graduation is back to my
country to encourage and develop ideas in neuroscience research, both basically and clinically. By
using networks as Chevening alumni, collaboration with experts in other fields is expected to gain
more ideas for developing research. My target is doing more than two researches in a year and I
hope it could motivate another field to increase the research. Due to my role in the university, I will
also teach students about neuroscience and inspire them to deepen their knowledge in
neuroscience after graduation. I will gladly be a mentor for students’ research or their preparation to
take a neuroscience master’s degree in the UK.

For middle-term plan, I want to gather neurology experts, from neuroscientists, neurologists, and
neurosurgeons, in a forum or institution where they can share problems in managing neurological
disorders and give solutions or ideas to deal with the disorders, and the forum also provides room
for them to develop and promote research not only in neuroscience field but also multidisclipinary
field. I intended to be the bridge between Indonesia and UK neuroscience center in research and
knowledge development cooperation. This forum will enable a strong network among experts and
help Indonesia to achieve good health and well-being, following one of the sustainable development
goals of the UN.

The long-term plan of my career is to take part as a leadership role for neuroscience development in
Indonesia which will make great progress in knowledge and research. Because policy in Indonesia
has strong influence in health-related decisions, thus there is an expectation that challenges and
obstacles in development neuroscience will be solved with wise solutions. As this knowledge
develops, I believe that there will be the improvement in the quality of people’s health and public
awareness for preventing diseases, both communicable and non -ommunicable diseases.
