Introduction to GSM - Roaming
In telecommunications, “roaming” is a general term referring to the extension of
connectivity service in a country that is different from the home location (where the
service was registered).
A GSM- contract is bound to one Network-Operator. So every SIM (Subscriber Identity
Module) is registered in the network-operators HLR (Home Location Register).
If a mobile phone can not connect to its SIMs home-network, it may connect to a
foreign network. If there is a “roaming” agreement between the two network -
operators, the foreign SIM will be registered in the operators “Visitors Location
Register” (VLR).
For providing network service, the hosting network operator will ask a fee which will be
billed by the SIMs home network- operator.
OnAir is the network-operator for the GSM-on-Board System.
Even on domestic flights the international Dial
code has to be used (e.g. +49 or 0049 for Germany).

Antenna coverage and satellite link

In general, Satcom antennas cover the upper hemisphere, down to around 5 degrees
elevation, with reference to the aircraft (Fig 34)

Ideal Coverage Volume

(elevation > 5o)

Figure 34, Antenna coverage

If the aircraft pitches or banks:

- The satellite may fall outside of this coverage area and the link will be lost – calls will
be lost if the link loss persists
- The satellite may be shielded by fuselage structure, e.g. wing or vertical stabiliser –
again, calls will be lost if the link loss persists
These limitations are more pronounced where the satellite is at a low elevation

Troubleshooting – POST and PAST

Power-On Self Test (POST)

At Start Up, the CSDU automatically performs the Power-On Self Test (POST). The Front
Panel LEDs illuminate amber to indicate that the CSDU has entered the INIT Mode
(Initialisation), the LEDs will then start flashing green at the frequency of 2 Hz. At
completion of the INIT Mode the CSDU will transition into Operational Mode and the LEDs
will display the current serviceability status of the TFS system.

Person Activated Self Test (PAST)

The PAST is activated by pressing the CSDU front panel Test Button (on-ground-only
function). The Front panel LEDs will start flashing green at the frequency of 2Hz. After
approximately 120 sec the CSDU will transition into OPS Mode and the LEDs will display
the current serviceability status of the TFS system.

GSM-R5 Training - TBCKST - Rev.16 - For Training Purposes only 91

Troubleshooting – TFS Status LEDs

The LEDs illuminate AMBER, then flash GREEN when

the CSDU is in Self Test mode.
The LEDs illuminate steady GREEN when the system
is operating correctly and there are no faults present.
The LEDs illuminate RED when there is a failure
within the system
The LEDs are lit AMBER when there is partial system
failure (which includes a bus failure, invalid data or the
system is attempting to log on or register to a service).
When an LED is not lit, it indicates that the relevant
service is not provided, or a system component is not
installed.
After successful completion of the CSDU Self Test all
the front panel LEDs should enter a steady GREEN
condition (with the exception of the Sat.Link #1 LED) .

Note: Sat. Link #1 will enter into a green steady state

after successful service registration with ground station

Test of GSM function with a mobile telephone

The “Test of the GSM function with a mobile telephone“ is an End-to-End test.
It establishes a GSM-connection from the A/C via Satelite to the public
telephone network and is applicable in case of e.g. AGS replacement (refer to
AMM).
A Mobile Phone with an international Roaming contract is required for this Test.
Note:
The usage of the Mobile Phone for testing will be billed by its Home-Network Operator !

The Mobile Phone has to be switched to „manual network selection“ and

„On Air“ has to be selected.
The requested code is the ARFCN. ARFCN stands for “Absolute Radio
Frequency Channel Number”. ARFCN is a radio channel numbering
scheme used to identify specific RF channels in a cellular mobile radio
system (range for GSM 1800: 512 – 885).
Note:
The names of the network operators are stored in a lookup- table inside
the mobile Telephone (not in the SIM!).
If Phones are used that were made before 2004, there might be the
network- number (901 15) displayed instead of „OnAir“ as Network
operator.
