Introduction to GSM
is the
Global System for Mobile
Communication.
GSM
GSM is: Provider
-wireless
-digital
-setup in cells
-networked
-interfaced to public telephone network (fixed line)
-bound by contract (billing)
BTS: Base Transceiver Station
2G (second Generation)
Technology System
TDMA / FDMA GSM - Global System for Mobile Communication, used worldwide
Time / Frequency Division ( more than 4.3 Billion Subscribers worldwide by 2009 )
Multiple Access
PDC - Personal Digital Cellular, a technology deployed in Japan only
3G (third Generation)
Technology System
Dual-band phones:
- GSM 900 and GSM1800 Bands (Europe, Asia, Australia and Brazil)
- GSM 850 and GSM 1900 (North America).
Tri-band phones:
- GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900 bands (european), allowing limited use in North America.
- GSM 850, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900 (north american), allowing limited world-wide use.
Quad-band phones: supporting all four major GSM frequency groups.
System Overview
GSM on Board
- is a single GSM-Cell on board of an aircraft (also known as a „Pico cell“)
- the typical configuration allows up to 7 voice calls per BTS at the same time
(+ data services)
- operates on GSM 1800 or 1900 band (depending on System)
- splits up the technology into an airborne and a ground part
- is available depending on height and position of the aircraft
- is controlled and monitored by an airborne Server (computer)
- is interfaced to other aircraft systems

UP
The Control Panel is the physical user interface to control the GSM on
Board system. It does not have any software or memory installed.
On the front panel of the Control Panel are Hardkeys (with integrated
Indicators) and system Status-Indicators. There is one Spare- Hardkey
for Future application (not used yet).
The System Status LEDs indicate the current Status of the System.
The Hardkeys allow Cabin Crew and Maintenance Staff to change the
Status of the GSM on Board system.
The Control Panel provides the Access for System Maintenance through
the RJ-45 interface for the Maintenance Laptop.

The BTS controls the radio frequency resources within the GSM-on-Board
system and allows direct communication between the mobile phones and
the GSM-on-Board system.
The BTS establishes the communication pipe to the mobile phones and
supports all necessary system features like radio access, power level control
and frequency configuration.
The BTS is also known as Pico-Cell.
The BTS is connected to the AGS, Control Panel and to the OBCE.
All GSM services including voice, SMS and GPRS are available through the
BTS.
Note:
Indicator On Ground and in Maintenance Mode the standard
indication is amber flashing.
Additional information can be found in Appendix E

The purpose of the OBCE within the GSM-on-Board System is to control the radio frequency
emissions of all mobile phones and to prevent them from connecting to terrestrial networks.
In case of a System Fault, the OBCE activates the “No Mobiles”- PAX signs via CIDS.
The OBCE controls the RF-signal of up to 2 BTSs in an A320 Family Aircraft.
The OBCE consists of these main components:
– One noise generator module for each frequency band:
CDMA/PDC/GSM: 420 / 460 / 800 / 850 / 900 (one combined module)
GSM: 1800
GSM: 1900
UMTS: 2100
UMTS: 2600
– A RF-Combiner, to combine the different noise signals and the GSM signals
from the connected BTS and to split the signals from the mobile phones to the
connected BTS
– One RF detector per frequency band, to supervise the correct function
of the radio frequency emission
– A microcontroller group, for device control
The OBCE provides three LEDs which are visible through the front
panel:
Note:
On Ground and in Maintenance Mode the
standard indication is:
LED 1, LED 2 and LED 3: active

Note: The Leaky Line Antenna emits only in a defined sector. It has to be aligned to work properly. It is clearly marked:
“ DOWN - EN BAS - UNTEN “
New Units (blue coating) don’t radiate in sectors and do not have a sector marking.
They do not need to be aligned!
The Cabin Transmit – Antenna is a Leaky- Line type Antenna. The Leaky Line
Antenna radiates the Radio Frequency (RF) signals emitted by the OBCE
and the BTS into the cabin. A Leaky Line antenna is installed to provide a
homogenous signal coverage over the whole cabin. The electromagnetic field
strength to crew, passengers and aircraft equipment will be very low. The
frequency- range of the Leaky Line Antenna is 100 MHz to 6 GHz. The Leaky
Line antenna is connected to the OBCE via RF coaxial cable.
Pull cable from top of the reel. Do not pull at cable from bottom of the reel.
Do not drag leaky line Do not use knives or other sharp objects to
along edges. remove the packing or install the leaky line.

Modification Changes to the equipment are shown as follows:
For Minor revisions, the hardware Minor Rev and/or the software variant is increased by one
increment, A becomes B and so on for hardware, and 010 becomes 020 and so on for software

System Operation
[SAT Antenna Mute] and [Maintenance On] should not be used during
flight, as they might disturb proper operation of the GSM on board
system.
Note:
- In case of enabling/disabling the [On]-Button or Flightdeck-Switch, the Service Available indication will
extinguish after approx. 180 seconds.
- The Control Panel will force a “System Failure” indication if the AGS is not responding within 3 minutes.
(e.g. in case of initial AGS installation, which takes approx. 9 minutes)

Elevation
The GSM on Board system will be activated automatically when the aircraft
reaches a height of 13124 feet (~4000 m) above Ground. The communication
service will be available in flight phase “cruise”. PSU PAX signs will indicate when
the use of mobile phones is permitted.
For “ Service Available”:
Note:
When the maximum capacity of voice calls is reached, another call will be rejected.
Depending on the Mobile Phone, the passenger might hear a warning tone.

Note:
- [Reset] has to be pushed for a minimum of 3 seconds.
-During System Start-Up the “System Failure” indication might be lit for a short time.
After approx. 3 minutes there should be a stable Status indication.
- A not properly aligned ADIRU (IRS) will result in a System Failure.
After A/C Power–Up it may take up to 10 min. to have the ADIRU aligned.
- Depending on System Settings, in case of a fault it may take some seconds between the
(de-)activation of the PAX Sign and the “System Failure” indicator.
Smoke detection
In normal Operation:
- the “Smoke Detection SYSTEM ON” indicator is illuminated green.
- the “ SMOKE TEST” Button is illuminated white.
The GSM on Board system is then automatically powered off and the
UPS-Battery-Pack is disconnected from the AGS- Server.
The system can also be forced to power off by one of the following
procedures:
- Cabin crew to press GSM MAIN POWER SWITCH in OHSC
Equipment Rack.
- Flight Crew to use Galley / Commercial switch in Flightdeck
(UPS-Battery-Pack NOT disconnected).
