Christmas
Christmas is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world through a series of activities:
exchange of gifts, family dinners, carol singing, preparation of nativity scenes, Christmas trees,
among others. Although its origin is religious in nature, today it is celebrated even by millions of
non-believers. For Christians, this holiday means the celebration of the nativity of the child Jesus
(birth), which was prophesied in the books of the Old Testament. The prophecies spoke about the
birth of a messiah who would come to Earth to free human beings from the original sin that
prevented them from living eternal life. Christmas is a celebration that, in the western world, we
are all familiar with. Regardless of whether or not we are religious people, every year we engage
in a series of activities such as exchanging gifts, singing Christmas carols, gathering with family at
turkey dinners and decorating our homes with trees full of colorful lights and picturesque doll
ornaments. However, Christmas is a celebration that, for Christians, has an important religious
significance. The history of its origin, moreover, is generally unknown even to many of those who
celebrate this date.
Holy Week
Holy Week, also known as Semana Mayor, is a commemoration of the Christian religion that is
celebrated annually between the months of March and the beginning of April of each year. The
commemoration recalls the Passion of Christ, narrated in the biblical gospels, which recount the
events of Jesus, from his entrance to Jerusalem, the last supper, his Way of the Cross, death and
subsequent resurrection of the Messiah. Holy Week is remembered through various activities,
masses, processions, living Stations of the Cross, among other Christian rites, which bring together
thousands of religious faithful to recall the events by which Jesus Christ is recognized as the savior
of humanity and son of God. Holy Week is preceded by Lent. In many countries, Friday of Sorrows,
also known as Council Friday, is considered the initial day of this holy cycle, which takes place
before Palm Sunday and recalls the suffering of Mary, Mother of Christ, during Holy Week.
