No.: Question Paper Code : 90045 B, Arch, DEGREE EXAMINATIONS, NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019 Fourth Semester AR8401 — DESIGN OF STRUCTURES ~ I (Regulations ~ 2017) Time : Three Hours Maximum : 100 Marks Use of IS 800 : 2007, Steel Table, IS 883 : 1994 to be permitted Answer ALL questions PART-A (10x2=20 Marks) What do you mean by grading of timber ? po . Sketch the elements of Timber roof truss. 3. What are the terminologies in Madras terrace roof ? s Define nominal diameter and gross diameter of the rivet. Write short notes on : i) Pitch distance. ii) Gauge distance 2 What are the types of connections used to connecting plates ? al What are the different types of column ? Draw sketch. ~ What is meant by throat thickness of weld ? © What are the types of welded joints ? Draw diagrams. 10. Define laterally supported beams as per IS 800 : 2007. PART-B (5x16=80 Marks) 11. a) Design a Madras terrace roof for a room size 5 m X12 m using standard grade teak wood joists. Thickness of lime concrete 75 mm and two course of Brick tiles 12 mm thick. (OR) b) Draw the neat sketch of Madras Terrace roof and explain construction method. 90045 , ‘AN EA 12. a) 13. a) 14. a) 15. a) Find the efficiencies of the following riveted joints. i) Single riveted lap joint for 10 mm plates with 16 mm dia rivets at a pitch of 50 mm cle. ii) Double riveted lap joint for 10 mm plates with 16 mm dia rivets at a pitch of 75 mm cle. 6, = 300 MPa, 6, = 150 MPa, ¢, = 100 MPa. (OR) A double riveted double cover butt joint is used to connect plates 12 mm thick. Using Unwin’s formula, determine the diameter of rivet, rivet value, pitch and efficiency of the joint. Adopt the following. «, =800 Nimm?, «, = 0.6, ¢, = 100 Nimm?, £, 260 N/mm? A18 mm thick plate is joined to a 16 mm thick plate by 150 mm long (effective) butt weld. Determine the strength of joint if i) Double V Butt weld is used, ii) Single V butt weld is used. Assume Fe 250 grade plates and field welds are used. (OR) A tie member consisting of angle section 80 mm x 50 mm x 8 mm is welded to a 8 mm gusset plate. Design the weld to transmit a load equal to the full strength of the member. Design a built up column for a length of 2.5 m to support a working load of 3500 KN. The column is effectively held at both ends and restrained in direction at one of the ends. (OR) Design the compressive strength of a rolled steel angle section ISA 90 x 90 x 12 mm @ 158 Nim with the length of the member as 2.8 m. Assume f, = 250 MPa and the ends are hinged. Design a simply supported (laterally supported beam of effective span 10 m to carry a factored load of 50 kN/m, the depth of beam is restricted to 500 mm. (OR) Design a simply supported beam of 10 m effective span carrying a total factored dead load of 25 kN/m. Factored live load = 35 kN/m. Depth of beam should not exceed 500 mm. The compression flange of the beam is laterally supported by floor construction. Assume stiff end bearing is 75 mm.
