1 The number of single fathers has increased considerably in recent years in
2 Britain. We spoke to one such dad, Steve Baker, about what he copes
3 with it all. Steve, 43, has brought up his teenage sons since he and his
4 wife split up two years ago. ‘It’s much difficult for a man than it is for
5 woman,’ says Steve. ‘It’s a full-time job, whatever you are. Fortunately
6 for me, my employers were very sympathetic in the first few month and
7 they let me take time off work to get themselves organized.
8 As far as the housework is concerned, I don’t mind to cook, as I’ve
1
9 always been good at that; it’s the ironing I can’t stand! Generally
10 speaking, the boys and I get on very good together but of course,
11 sometimes we have rows. That’s when I really miss having anyone there
12 with me to help me out. I had had a couple of relationships in the last two
years but they haven’t worked out. That has a lot to do with the fact that I
put my kids before anyone other. I take fatherhood very seriously.’

Question 7. (10 points). Read the text and choose the best answer from A,B,C or
D.Write the answer in ‘ Your answers’ Part.
How old is the Earth? In the past, scientists came up with many interesting
ways to calculate the Earth’s age. But as we learn more and more about the Earth,
some of the old ideas don’t seem as useful.
One older method of estimating the Earth’s age is by looking at layers of rock.
Rocks that are beneath other rocks must be older. So, when you look at a cliff with
many different layers of rock, the rocks on the bottom must be oldest. But how old are
they? Originally, scientists estimated each layer took about the same amount of time
to form. But now, most scientists agree such estimation is not really accurate. In some
places, rock layers form very rapidly. In other places, they form slowly.
A better way to estimate the Earth’s age is from radiation. From chemistry and
physics, we know a lot about radiation. We know how fast radioactive rocks decay
(give off radioactive particles). By looking at how much radiation certain rocks give
off, scientists can get a much more accurate age for the Earth. Based on analysis of
the radiation from very old rocks, the Earth appears to be about 4,500 million years
old.

age.
2. What does paragraph 2 mainly discuss?
A. An inaccurate method of dating the Earth B. The Earth’s age
C. The most accurate method of dating the Earth D. Various kinds of rocks
