QUESTION 1 (25 MARKS)
a. Briefly explains the difference between Flexibility Method and Stiffness Method. List
the advantages and disadvantages of Flexibility Method.
(CO2 : PO2-5 marks)
b. A beam as shown in Figure QI(b) is supported by aroller at B and C and fixed at A. The
beam carries a uniform load of 20 kNim at span BC. The beam has constant properties
of the modulus of elasticity, E of 200 kN/mm? and moment of inertia of 2.8 x 107 mm.
‘Using the flexibility method, determine the deflection at B and the reaction at all support.
Draw the shear and moment diagrams of the beam.

QUESTION 2 (25 MARKS)
‘A beam as shown in Figure Q2 has roller at node 1 and 2, and a rigid support at node 3, The
beam is subjected fo a uniformly distibuted load of 12 kN/m and a point load of 25 KN.
Moment inertia, I and modulus of elasticity, E are constants, Neglect the effect of axial loads
or axial deformation. By using the stiffness method, determine

QUESTION 3 (25 MARKS)
a, Collapse mechanism on the structure occurs if no resistance is setup against deformation
in the structure. Various types of independent mechanism are identified which enable
prediction of possible failure modes ofthe structure.
(i) _Deseribe three fundamental conditions for plastic analysis
(CO4 : POL-3 marks)
(ii) Identify three theorems of plastic collapse and show the relationship of those
‘theorems with the plastic load factor.
(C04: POI- 6 marks)
(iii) Briefly explain what plastic hinge is?
