Where I teach?

My colleagues used to call me Sir Y/Theo. I am working at DepEd-Division of San Pablo, San
Jose National High School, one of the mega schools in the City as an educator concentrating in Araling
Panlipunan 10 (Mga Kontemporaryong Isyu) for almost four years. For the past 2 years, I also teach at
private institution handling various subjects such as Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao and Physical Education.

What subject I teach?

My field of specialization is concentrated to Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan) primarily on

Contemporary Issues. I handled grade 10 students. If we speak of “Mga Kontemporaryong Isyu,” it refers
to Any Issues which have its implications, applicability, relevance, significance, effect and material
presence in the present time or at its given frame(period) of time can be sorted as Contemporary issues.
“A contemporary issue can be defined as any event, idea, opinion or topic in a given subject that is
relevant to the present day.

Description of teaching experience in terms of multiculturalism/diversity

Teaching this subject was fun at the same time quite challenging because you encountered
different students with unique cultural origin/background. Every learner has its own personal interest,
abilities and skills. In our school, especially in our department (Araling Panlipunan), we make sure to
follow the implementation of localization and contextualization of the curriculum as mandated by the
Department of Education and R.A 1533 or Enhanced Basic Education Act. It is my duty to know the
students well and as much as possible makes learning relevant for all of them. I must agree that teaching
must effectively address and embrace the realities that come with living and working in a diverse school,
community and country.

Besides, school are also considered as the training ground of young minds. The result will be
after schooling as they ready to face challenges the reality in diversity of culture & society.
Philosophy & Motivation for Teaching

If we empower the child to capitalize on their uniqueness and individualism, we surely produce a
learner with sense of value for the country and foster love for humanity despite of diversity in culture.
"Every classroom has its own unique community; my role as the teacher will be to assist each
child in developing their own potential and learning styles. I will present a curriculum that will
incorporate each different learning style, as well as make the content relevant to the students' lives. I will
incorporate hands-on learning, cooperative learning, projects, themes, and individual work that engage
and activate students learning." 

A culturally response teaching in my career

I would like to emphasize that Culturally responsive teaching is not just about one day of
celebrating a certain culture. It’s about daily practices that bring students’ cultures into instruction,
valuing each student and what they bring, teaching them as people first in order to maximize their
potential as students. A multicultural society is best served by a culturally responsive curriculum.
Schools that acknowledge the diversity of their student population understand the importance of
promoting cultural awareness. Teachers who are interested in fostering a cultural awareness in their
classroom should actively demonstrate to their students that they genuinely care about their cultural,
emotional, and intellectual needs. For the past 5 years in this profession, it helps me grew more as a
teacher. My love and passion for promoting local cultural awareness in every lesson that I conducted. To
Ladson-Billings, 2014 being culturally responsive is a critical and necessary feature of our interactions
with one another. It is also vitally important in the context of education that “empowers students
intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills,
and attitudes.”

Reflection of Schooling experience

Teaching is not just a job that I perform because I expect a reward at the end of each month; it is
my passion and I feel extremely satisfied with every successful lesson. I like to help the society, and
teaching gives me a great opportunity to do so. I am passionate about educating my students, so I work
with them and motivate them to lead them to find inspiration in learning. I use different strategies to
engage them and share with them the knowledge and necessary skills under my subject matter. As a
teacher, I believe that I play a crucial role in the success of every learning process. To guarantee that
learning will take place, I make sure to create a learning environment that is relevant to the students’
diverse background. I learned a tremendous amount of information and experiences since my first
enrollment in the Master of Arts in Education-Cultural Education at Enverga University. Now, I’m still
pursuing to complete this program with 12 units this summer term. Through this program, I learned to be
flexible, remain open to continuous learning, and improve my career. I am also learned about the
importance of time and about the importance of education in our life. Applying the concepts based on
what i learned from Culture-based Education Framework in the curriculum helped me to know more the
nature of my subject. In fact, i had the opportunity to re-skill myself and learn new strategies to support
my mission as a teacher.

I have gotten better at being able to reach the students that everyone else has given up on. Having
worked as a mediator and being able to connect with the students; I am able to get both sides to achieve
an understanding and helping the students to successes. This has been very important to me, with the
experience, having a positive influence in a student’s life is one of the most important tools they will use
for the rest of their lives.
