Introduction - Decisions and Choice
When was the last time you made a major decision in life? Was
it the decision to choose the best college to study? Or you
had to figure out where to live. How easy or tough was it to
make the final choice?
Let us set aside major decisions for a while and take up
mundane decisions in daily life to begin with. It could be
something as simple as selecting the perfect pair of shoes or
even ordering a coffee at a large café where the attendant
presents a series of options (hot, cold, large, small, strong, light,
with or without sugar/milk/ice cream and so on). Sometimes
choices can be overwhelming! Researchers at Cornell
University estimate that the average adult makes about 35,000
remotely conscious decisions everyday of which about 227 of
them are on food alone. Mind boggling numbers!! Aren’t they?
The fact is that all of us make decisions everyday, and yet we
may find it challenging and time consuming to cut through the
maze of options. More options lead to more confusion. When
you add the factors of a time-crunch or high costs then
decisions may become induce stress for the maker.

2
How Thinking Affects Decision Making
How thinking affects Decision Making
While you now know that you make thousands of
decisions everyday, have you wondered how do you make
these decisions?
Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel Prize winner psychologist,
explores how we make decisions in his book, ’Thinking,
Fast and Slow’. In his writings, he explains System 1 and
System 2 thinking. System 1 is the intuitive “gut reaction”
kind of thinking whereas System 2 the analytical, “critical
way of making decisions”. Check out this short blog and a
2 minute video to know more and then you may try this
exercise to know more about how this works in real life:

How o YOU Make Decisions?

The mind helps us make hundreds or even thousands of

decisions, but it can be tricked as you may have noticed in the last
video and this may lead to an error in your decision. Wrong
decisions can be damaging and cost us not only time and money
but credibility and trust as well. The challenge with making
decisions is that we can not be sure whether they will turn out
well or not at the time of making the decision.
Wouldn’t it be great if you had a crystal ball that could help you
gaze into the future and predict the outcome of your decisions?
Well, maybe you may not have your own crystal ball but what
you do have is your own approach of solving problems and
making decisions. Being aware of your own strengths and
weaknesses will aid in learning. So, before we proceed and learn
more , do go ahead and take this quiz for a quick check on how
good your decision making is:

Decision Making with Others

Has it ever occurred that your family wanted to go out

for dinner but ended up not going because all couldn’t
agree on a restaurant. Did you ever plan a vacation with
friends? Hopefully it ended in creating happy memories
rather than the plan getting abandoned altogether.
While you have had a lot of experience with making
personal decisions and may have developed expertise in
certain aspects, you must have noticed that making
decisions in a group have their own set of challenges to
deal with.

So to improve the group decision making, here is a blog

to enhance the effectiveness of decision-making by
involving others:

Decision Making at Workplace

While involving others in decisions maybe a rarity in personal life,

at work this is a regular and routine affair. We are required to
work with the immediate team and also handle various
stakeholders and their requirements. Here the timelines are tight,
the demands are complex and the stakes are high. It becomes
crucial to master the skill of collaborative decision making at work.
This module is divided into 3 modules and is designed to cover
the following topics :
▪ Decision making
▪ Collaboration

The Fundamentals of Decision Making

To emphasize the need of a formal decision-making process, C.

Wright Mills, an American sociologist and author, once said,
'Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases;
neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set
alternatives. Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the
available choices, to argue over them – and then the opportunity
to choose.' It's been estimated that most human beings make
thousands of decisions in the course of an average day, many of
which are unconscious decisions. It is important for your personal
and professional success that you become an effective decision
maker. This involves following an established decision-making
process and adapting your decision-making style to suit different
situations.

Let us understand the decision making process through the

following video and a course:

Decision Making Styles and Types

We all make decisions every day. Some are only of minor importance and some of the decisions you
make will have an impact on your life for a long time to come. Some decisions will not only affect you,
but will have far reaching implications for others, as well. It is important to be aware of personal
decision making style and how it affects the people you work with each day. Understanding how your
decision making style and its types will help you to make the serious leadership calls that define a
successful leader.

In these videos and course, you will learn various decision making types and styles and how to use
them and make quick decisions

Decision Making Tools & Techniques

Till this point you have learnt about the decision

making model with steps and also have a fair idea of
the various types and styles of decision making. It is
time to take a look at tools and techniques that can be
used in the process. You are probably already using
many of these in your day-to-day decisions but may
not be aware of these.

Decision Making Challenges and Errors

As in any process, there are challenges that you will invariably come across when making critical
decisions. One of the first challenge maybe to ascertain whether you are dealing with a problem to
solve or a decision to make. The two seem similar and one may get confused. This article tells the
difference:
 Article: Decision Making Problem

Once you can ascertain that it is indeed a decision that needs to be made, you may run into several
hurdles at each step:
 HURDLES FACED DURING EFFECTIVE DECISION MAKING

While there may be many challenges, we can learn to overcome some of them such as becoming
decisive and being aware of our unconscious biases and learning to overcome them. We will learn
how to do this as we proceed.

1
Decisiveness
What does it mean to be decisive? Decision makers come in all shapes and forms and work at all levels of an
organization. It's not only CEOs and managers who must be effective decision makers – all employees should have the
character traits necessary to make timely and appropriate decisions to enhance organizational success.
This course explains the roadblocks to decisive action followed by introduction to the character traits that will help
employees build confidence and make better decisions. The course also examines on how to find the courage to act
decisively under challenging circumstances, and it shows how to get the information you need, and determine when it's
appropriate to act—or conversely, when it's better to hold off until you know more.

1
Overcoming Barriers to Decisiveness

Knowing how to make a decision doesn't always lead to having a

strong decisive nature. Indecisiveness is often due to personal
barriers that individuals use to protect themselves from failure.
Fortunately, recognizing barriers as they arise can go a long way
toward overcoming indecisiveness in the workplace.

The following article introduces five concepts of how to

overcome barriers to decisiveness. A main driver in the
decision-making process is fear: fear of making a 'wrong' choice.
This article examines fear and addresses ways to overcome it.
Recognizing that there's no right or wrong decision is a first
step; all you can do is make the best possible choice based on
currently available information and the next course is all about
how to confront biases in order to make good decisions.

Common Biases & Errors

Part of understanding the role of unconscious bias in the workplace is admitting to yourself that you
have biases too. Once you've accepted it, you can take steps to overcome those biases and embrace
workplace diversity. In this course, you'll learn how to recognize and observe your own biases. You'll
also learn how to stop, collaborate, and move past your biases. Finally, you'll learn what to do if a bias
flares up again.

Establishing Effective Collaboration at Work
Collaboration takes place when two or more individuals work together as a team to achieve a common goal. This
can happen in traditional or virtual teams.
Each one in the team contributes with his or her own capabilities, skills and knowledge. Complex problems and
critical decisions require the expertise and experience of multiple individuals whether they are part of a team at
work or are stakeholders in the common objective. Therefore, for teams to work together effectively it is essential
to establish a culture of collaboration based on clear and open communication.

In this module, we will learn why collaboration is needed and the workplace and how to create a culture conducive
to effective decision making.

When we help others grow and succeed, we are invariably helping ourselves to also do the same. So we also need to
