Attempt any three questions. Question number 4 is compulsory.

1.(a). Compare the conducting properties of copper and aluminium as used in electrical
machines. [6]
(b). “Cold rolled steel sheet is preferred over hot rolled steel”. Justify this statement. [4]
(c). “Low voltage winding is kept near to the core”. Justify this statement. [3]
(d). “Ventilating ducts are kept along the lamination (i.e, radial ventilation) in the machines
with long core”. Justify this statement. [3]
2. Derive the expression for kVA output of a single phase transformer for design point of view.
[8]
3. A transformer gave a temperature rise of 20°C after one hour and 32°C after two hours on full
load. What is the final steady temperature rise at full load ? If the transformer is worked on 50%
overload, how long will it take to attain the same temperature rises ? Take the copper losses on
full load are twice the iron losses. [8]
4. Given the information:
Maximum flux density in core =1.35 Wb/m²
Current density in conductors =2.5A/mm²
Constant for output voltage per turn (K) = 0.45
Core type = Cruciform
Window space factor = 0.25
Stacking factor = 0.9
Ratio of window height to width = 2.5
Width of LV, HV winding and duct between them are 20 mm, 25 mm and 15 mm respectively.
For a 100kVA, 11000/400V, 50 Hz, 3-phase, ∆/Y core type oil immersed, natural cooled
distribution transformer . Assuming all other required parameter wherever necessary, Calculate:
a) Dimensions of the core, window and yoke.
b) Overall dimensions of the frame.
c) Per unit resistance and leakage reactance drop.
d) Per unit regulation at 0.8 pf lagging.
e) Overall dimensions of tank by assuming suitable clearances.
f) Suggest whether this design requires tube arrangements for cooling purpose so that maximum
temperature may not exceed 45°C. Assume that iron loss is equal to copper loss. [16]
