1.3 Roman Settlers
There were 50,000 Roman soldiers in Britain-about 15 percent of the whole Roman army. The soldiers
lived in forts. The forts were spaced with one day’s march between them. Between the forts, the Romans
built roads so they could travel quickly across the country. How did Britain become more peaceful? What
impact did the Romans make on Britain? What was it like in Roman Britain?

The Celts are defeated


Some of tribes made peace with the Romans immediately. They agreed to obey Roman laws and pay taxes.
Other tribes fought against the Romans and were defeated many times. Many tribes refused to join together
with other tribes to make themselves stronger. So the Romans were able to attack individual tribe sand beat
them one by one. Over time, the country became more peaceful as the Romans defeated more and more
tribes and made peace with other tribes.

The Romans build towns


The Romans built towns in every country they conquered. Roman towns were all laid out in the same way.
They were protected by tall, thick walls and had straight streets laid out in a grid pattern. There were
