This apparatus should be used only for its intended operation; alterations will void
the warranty.

1.2.1.1 Warranty
For each product sold, PAC offers to the original owner ("Buyer") a limited
warranty against failure to conform to the product specifications or any defects in
material and workmanship for a period of
i twelve (12) months from the date of installation of the product or
ii eighteen (18) months from date of invoice,
During the Initial Warranty period, PAC offers a limited warranty on each part or
product repaired or replaced by a PAC service person for a period ending the later
of
a the remaining term of the Initial Warranty of the product or
b ninety (90) days from the date of repair or replacement,
whichever is longer. After expiration of the Initial Warranty period, PAC offers a
ninety (90) day limited warranty on each part or product repaired or replaced by a
PAC service person. PAC further warrants that the products and parts it sells will
conform to PAC's written specifications therefor. The foregoing limited warranties
cover parts and labor only and PAC does not warrant and will not reimburse the
Buyer for any other costs relating repairing or replacing the product at issue. The
foregoing limited warranties apply only to the repair or replacement of defective
parts and/or products and such determination will be in the sole discretion of PAC.
The limited warranties of this Section 1.2.1.1. Warranty are further subject to those
warranty exclusions set forth in Section 1.2.1.3. Limited warranty exclusions.

1.2.1.2 Aftermarket
The use of third party parts in the operation or maintenance of the product or
repairs or servicing by unauthorized service personnel immediately voids all
further warranty obligations of PAC. PAC genuine consumables are sold on an as-
is basis and have no warranty beyond being shipped in good working order.

To the extent a PAC product is used in connection with the operation of a nuclear
power facility, Buyer agrees to indemnify and hold PAC harmless from any and all
actions, claims, suits, damages and expenses arising from such use. PAC
provides no warranty on the oral representations made by its personnel while they
are attempting to assist Buyer in the operation of a product. This Standard Limited
Warranty does not apply to items consumed by the products during their ordinary
use, including but not limited to fuses, batteries, paper, septa, fittings, screws,
fuses, pyrolysis, dryer or scrubber tubes, sample boats, furnaces or lamps.
This warranty is valid only if genuine PAC parts, consumables and standards are
used in PAC products.

1.2.2.1 General
Buyer agrees that in no case shall PAC be liable for any special, incidental,
consequential, or punitive damages based upon any legal theory whether or not
such damages are foreseeable. Such damages include, but are not limited to, loss
of profits, loss of savings or revenue, loss of use of the product or any associated
equipment, cost of capital, cost of any substitute equipment, facilities or services,
downtime, the claims of third parties including customers, injury to property and,
unless precluded under applicable state law, bodily and personal injury. PAC's
total liability for any and all losses and damages arising out of any and all causes
whatsoever including, without limitation, defects in the product(s), services,
software, or documentation supplied or breach of this agreement, shall in no event
exceed the purchase price of the applicable product(s). Buyer agrees these
limitations on PAC’s liability are reasonable and reflected in the amounts charged
by PAC for its products.

1.2.3 Compliance
1.2.3.1 General
These Warranty Terms are subject to change without notice. PAC also retains the
right to modify these warranty terms in order to comply with policy or laws
governing warranty issues in states or countries having specific remedies differing
or additional to those described within this document.
1.2.3.2 Severability
If any one or more of the provisions or subjects contained in the Agreement shall
for any reason be held invalid, illegal, or unenforceable, it shall not affect the
validity and enforceability of any other provisions or subjects.

• Single COMPUTER
The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is licensed with the COMPUTER as a single
integrated product. The SOFTWARE PRODUCT may only be used with the
COMPUTER.
• Rental
You may not rent or release the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
• Software Transfer
You may permanently transfer all of your rights under this EULA only as part
of a sale or transfer of the COMPUTER, provided you retain no copies, you
transfer all of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT (including all component parts, the
media and printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA and, if applicable, the
Certificate(s) of Authenticity), and the recipient agrees to the terms of this
EULA. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is an upgrade, any transfer must include
all prior versions of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
• Termination
Without prejudice to any other rights, PAC may terminate this EULA if you fail
to comply with the terms and conditions of this EULA. In such event, you must
destroy all copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT and all of its component
parts.
1.3.3 Upgrades
If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is an upgrade of a component of a package of
software programs which you licensed as a single product, the SOFTWARE
PRODUCT may be used and transferred only as part of that single product
package and may not be separated for use on more than one computer.
1.3.4 Copyright
All title and copyrights in and to the SOFTWARE PRODUCT (including but not
limited to any images, photographs, animations, video, audio, music, text and
“applets,” incorporated into the SOFTWARE PRODUCT), the accompanying
printed materials, and any copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, are owned by
PAC or its suppliers. The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is protected by copyright laws
and international treaty provisions. You may not copy the printed materials
accompanying the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

This system was thoroughly inspected and carefully packed before leaving our
factory. Responsibility for its safe delivery was assumed by the carrier upon
acceptance of the shipment. Claims for loss or damage sustained in transit must
be made upon the carrier by the recipient as follows.

Correct disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment in
the end-of life
Applicable in the European Union and other European countries with
separate collection systems.
The above WEEE-symbol is the official marking for equipment under the WEEE-
scope. In some EC-Member states "pure B2B equipment" is not necessarily
marked with the waste bin-symbol. To provide a homogenous EC-wide procedure,
PAC however uses the marking in all EC-Member states.

2.1 Certifications
The system and its components have been designed with safety in mind. The
design applies to the use, the conditions and the instructions described in the
documentation. The system
• Is CSA/cCSAus approved.
• Has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital
device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules.
• Meets the requirements of the European Directives concerning health,
hygiene and safety. The standards applied are listed in the “CE Declaration of
Conformity”.
If the user makes changes or modifications that are not expressly approved by
PAC, PAC reserves the right to void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.
WARNING
Failure to follow the instructions and procedures contained in this

The instructions and procedures must be performed by qualified
and trained personnel only.

Any other use or modification of the apparatus without written agreement from
PAC will be regarded as noncompliant: PAC will not be liable for any possible
resulting damage or injury, and the warranty will be voided.
The apparatus may only be operated and serviced by trained qualified authorized
persons.
The operator must refrain from any operation that can affect the safety of the
system and of persons. The operator is always required to ensure that the
apparatus is in proper condition when it is operating.
The content of this document must be read, understood and observed in all points
and by each person responsible for the preparation, the transport, the storage, the
installation, the operation, and the maintenance of the instrument, before starting
to work with and on the instrument.
Utilizing advanced technology and a high quality design, the OptiDist™ allows
laboratory analysts of all skill levels to perform automatic atmospheric pressure
distillations, which comply with consensus group standard test methods, on a wide
variety of liquid hydrocarbon materials. Typically, these distillations are used to
characterize the tendency of a hydrocarbon fuel to vaporize. Vaporization
characteristics are a critical measure of overall fuel safety and performance.
The instrument offers several modes of operation that employ the power of
automation to significantly increase test productivity (sample throughput) while
also improving repeatability and reproducibility. In all modes, a large graphical

For fast and reliable quality control, analyzed samples can be instantaneously
compared to specifications programmable in the pre-stored product for in spec /
out-spec control. Up to 200 products can be preprogrammed and saved. Thus,
analysts can instantaneously see the information on how obtained results match
to pre-programmed typical specifications, i.e. typical temperature vs. volume or
volume vs. temperature, for fast product quality evaluation. The instrument can
automatically generate a Pass/Fail quality statement providing a detailed report.

3.7 Terminology
/i
Dry Point (DP): Thermometer reading observed when the last drop of liquid evapo-
rates from the lowest point in the distillation flask. Drops or films of liq-
uid on the side of the distillation flask are disregarded.
Final Boiling Point (FBP) The maximum thermometer reading obtained during the test. Usually
occurs after the evaporation of all liquid from the bottom of the distilla-
tion flask. Also known as Maximum Temperature.
Initial Boiling Point (IBP) The temperature at the instant the first drop falls from the lower end of
the condenser tube.
Per Cent Residue % volume of residue left in the distillation flask (measured in accord-
ance with the standard in a 5 ml graduated cylinder).
Corrected temperature Temperature reading as describe above corrected for barometric pres-
reading sure at 101,3 kPa.
Per Cent recovery The volume measured at the end of the distillation if after a 2-minute
interval two successive observations agree (measured in accordance
with standard method).
Percent total Recovery The combined percent recovery and residue in the distillation flask. To
get percent loss deduct percent total recovery from 100.
Thermometer reading The temperature of the vapor measured in the neck of the distillation
flask below the vapor tube.

During a distillation run, the Central Processing Unit (CPU) of the OptiDist™
controls and monitors the operation of the overall system by means of a user
designated distillation product program and data received from the heating block,
the condenser bath and the receiving chamber.

The distillation flask heater assembly, located to the left of the touch-screen,
breaks down as follows:

OptiDist™ Description
• Distillation flask heater assembly enclosure door (G) for protection of the
operator from accidents and against air drafts draughts.
The distillation flask enclosure has a transparent glass door, at the front for
easy access to and inspection of the distillation flask. The transparent door
has been specially selected for its resistance to heat and shocks.
• A distillation flask stopper attachment device (A) assures that the distillation
flask is well positioned in the distillation flask heater platform (C).
• Two fire extinguisher injection slots (B) (one above and one under the heating
element). CO2 gas injection spray is triggered by two flame detectors (J)
situated on the internal right side of the distillation flask heater assembly
enclosure, above and under the heater platform.
• A fan (E) at the bottom of the distillation flask heater assembly is positioned
for rapid cooling of the distillation flask. For increase distillation flask cooling
efficiency the distillation flask heater platform (C) is automatically released in
low position at the end of test run for a better air distribution. This is performed
by energizing an electromagnet at the rear of the distillation flask heater
platform releasing the automatic positioning device of the heating platform.
The lower part of the distillation flask heater platform is hidden by housing,
while the upper part is easily accessible by opening the transparent door (G)
for placing the distillation flask.
The manually activated lever of the automatic positioning device of the heater
platform is used to lower or to raise the heater platform:
• Lower the flask heater platform positioning lever and the flask heater platform
comes in contact with the flask bottom (high position).
• Pull the flask heater platform positioning lever towards the top to release the
flask heater platform (low position) for flask insertion or removal.
A base plate or flask support board with centered hole, diameter 32 mm (1 1/4 in.),
38 mm (1 1/2 in.) or 50 mm (2 in.) is placed on the heater platform. The heater
platform is equipped with a base plate identification sensor that allows
confirmation that the right base plate is used according to the product group
selected and that the flask and base plate are well positioned.

The vapor temperature probe is a Pt100 IEC 751 platinum probe class A with
built-in memory chip including probe correction values. This means the OptiDist™
automatically recognizes the probe and imports data at plug-in avoiding the need
to enter manually probe correction values and probe ID. Up to 5 calibration points
can be memorized (2 calibration points as standard).
Insert the probe wiring through the wire support atop the distillation flask heater
assembly and install the vapor temperature probe terminal plug into the connector
socket located on the top of the OptiDist™ above the distillation flask heater
platform. When not in use the temperature probe should be placed in the probe
holder atop the unit.
Before the distillation test, the vapor temperature probe must be inserted into the
distillation flask so that the probe is centered into the distillation flask: this is
ensured by the stopper assembly; and the depth of the vapor temperature probe
in the distillation flask must be precisely adjusted. To help the operator to position
the vapor temperature probe with a perfect repeatability, the stopper holder has
been specially designed as a gauge.

A Receiver cylinder
The receiver cylinder provided with the OptiDist™, also called receiver or
graduated cylinder, meets standard test method specifications. The receiver
cylinder is used to
• measure the volume of the material to be distilled (exactly 100% by volume)
for the sample preparation
• for distillate recovery.
After the material is poured into the distillation flask, the receiver must be
positioned in the receiving chamber. The drop plate allowing the distillate to run
down the wall of the receiver is fixed directly to the end of the condenser tube
assuring it is not forgotten before test starting and it is well positioned. The
receiver stand positioning at the bottom of the receiving chamber assures the right
position of the receiver so that the drip tip automatically touches the wall of the
receiver.
If the glass cylinder is replaced after damage, take care that the glass cylinder is
completely on the base to ensure that the 100% volume mark is positioned
properly inside the cylinder (= 180 mm).
NOTE
A 200 ml receiver cylinder is available as optional accessories for
ASTM D189 tests. No re-calibration of the system is needed
between tests with 100 ml and 200 ml receiver cylinders; the stand-
ard method selected in the distillation product determines the cali-
bration scale.

NOTE
The heat exchanging liquid level in the cooling system may have to
be serviced about every two years. The system will be alerted by
the level sensor of the reservoir and the failure alarm “Low cooling
liquid level” will be triggered.
The procedure for filling the cooling system is explained in the maintenance
manual.
The heat exchanging liquid supplied by PAC has been specially studied and
developed. Its thermal capacity, its viscosity at the working temperature, its anti-
corrosive and anti-foaming properties are particularly important for the correct
operation and preservation of the circuits.
NOTE
The heat exchanging liquid must be ordered at PAC (see the spare
parts list). It is important to use coolant provided by PAC for correct
operation of your OptiDist™, as its properties are particularly com-
patible with the application.
In case of problem in the cooling circuit, the circuit must be drained before
replacing any part (call for a qualified technician).

4.5.3 Alarms
No parts of the OptiDist™ at dangerous voltages are accessible by the operator
(EN 61010-1).
Alarms are accompanied by a discontinuous audio alarm,. They remain visible as
long as the default persists; even if the alarm has been acknowledged.
Alarms warn the operator in the event of a malfunction whether the OptiDist™ is in
test or idle:
• Detection of a default during the test run:
- Opening of the receiving chamber door for example
• Component failure detection
• Detection of a safety state (either absolute or fixed by the user)
WARNING
Generally when the alarm buzzer is triggered, the operator must
display the cause and ensure that safety features are working cor-
rectly.
When a test is stopped the following occurs (if a power supply cutoff has not been
occurred before):
• The distillation flask heater is switched off
• The level follower goes to the upper or standby position
• The distillation flask cooling starts up
• The receiver chamber temperature is regulated to the standby value
(configured in the service parameters)

CAUTION
A fire extinguisher must always be available in the laboratory. If a
flame has been extinguished with CO2 gas, we strongly advise to
open the windows to air the laboratory.
When a fire is detected, the system injects extinguisher gas into the distillation
flask heater assembly, switches the only power consuming devices off and emits a
continuous loud alarm. Faults can be displayed on the screen by activating the
Message main menu: “Fire Detection” will appear. Switch off the unit to stop the
alarm.
NOTE
A serial contact is provided to connect the fire emergency signal to
an external “fire” alarm device.
NOTE
The gas supply is connected externally at the rear of the Opti-
Dist™.
NOTE
In order to make sure of the good working order of the system, it is
advised regularly testing the flame detector and the control sole-
noid valve of the CO2 inlet.
Time between controls depends on the OptiDist™ environment. The user and the
service personal will determine the ideal interval according to their observations
and their experience.

The dry point sensor must be installed in the distillation flask so that the point of
the sensor rests exactly at the center of the lowest point at the bottom of the
distillation flask. This is ensured by the specific stopper.
The automatic dry point sensor (DP sensor) consists of a long stainless steel
jacket with a thermocouple at the lower end to detect temperature differences.
NOTE
The type of dry point sensor (125 or 200 ml) is automatically recog-
nized at plug in by the OptiDist™.
NOTE
Boiling stones should not be used with the automatic dry point
detection kit.

parameters management, etc.), ALAN® and HLIS-32® software allow transmitting
results directly to a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
Each program comprises several modules. The main program operates as the
control center. This component of the software makes the functions available with
all types of respective brand units in the same way. The OptiDist™ specific
program module can thus be added to the main program if already installed in
your laboratory.

With the integrated Online Manager you can define your operation, tests and
instruments. You can also specify users, access privileges and test result
parameters.

After unpacking, verify the unit and its accessories as well as any possible
damage sustained in transit, which must immediately brought to the attention of

The various parts of the OptiDist™ are carefully verified and tested before
shipping. Nevertheless, it is worth verifying that the equipment received
corresponds to the packing list enclosed.
On taking delivery of the OptiDist™, unpack all these parts.

Do not put the OptiDist™ in the direct sunlight.

Do not cover the air intake slots of the unit. If you want to set up
many units in rows, be sure that you keep minimum 20 cm distance
(8 inches) between units. Failure to allow sufficient air ventilation
flow can cause instrument damage.
Put the OptiDist™ on a level, flat workbench and not subject to vibrations, near
electrical sockets and near connections to fire extinguisher gas supply. Provide
enough space so that the OptiDist™ can be operated conveniently and for access
to the rear connectors.

Place the external PC close to the instrument (the length of the Ethernet cable

The CO2 connection system is composed of a hose nozzle with a
compression ferrule with inside diameter of 8 mm to connect a rigid
metallic pipe. Adapt a hose nipple on the hose nozzle to connect a

2. Connect the CO2 gas source to the connector at the rear of the OptiDist™.
It is possible to connect an external fire alarm device to the OptiDist™. Call for a
qualified technician to perform the connection. For connection instructions refer to

Once the OptiDist™ has been installed, before switching on, allow
the OptiDist™ to adjust to the ambient temperature in the labora-
tory for 24 hours (especially if the OptiDist™ was stored at low tem-

1. Push the Main Power switch on the right side of the OptiDist™ to the up or ON
position.
The small green indicator lamp on the front side lights up indicating the
OptiDist™ is powered on and the following operations are performed:
• A self diagnostic test is started.
• The condenser bath, receiving chamber and cooling system temperatures
are regulated to default values.
• After the self dignostic test has completed, the welcome screen appears,
see 4.8.5. The Welcome screen.
1. By pressing the PAC button at the bottom of the welcome screen, the PAC

If the sample is not dry, obtain another sample that is free from sus-

If such a sample cannot be obtained, remove the suspended water

6.1.5.3 Adjust the vapor temperature probe in the distillation flask stopper
NOTE
The distillation flask stopper assembly is specially designed for the
precise adjustment of the vapor temperature probe positioning in
the stopper (see below) and so, in the distillation flask.

When the vapor temperature probe is connected to the OptiDist™,
the "Probe" state indicator in the list of starting conditions of the
Run /Start & Display screen becomes green. In the contrary case, a
test cannot start.
NOTE
If a dry point kit is used, refer to manual for the adjustment of the
dry point probe.

Be sure that the sample, the receiver, and the distillation flask are at
the temperature specified by the standard test method. Otherwise,
the recovery determination will give incorrect results.
1. Put a few boiling stones in the distillation flask to prevent a boiling retardation.
2. Pour the content of the receiver cylinder into the distillation flask.
Be sure that the vapor tube of the flask is pointed upward, otherwise material
could run out through the vapor tube.
NOTE
• Do not use any boiling stones for dry point tests.
• Do not clean the receiver cylinder after pouring the sample
into the flask, or the result will be false!
NOTE
Be sure that the vapor temperature probe has been adjusted
with the stopper assembly holder.
7. Pull the flask heater platform positioning lever to release the flask heater
platform in low position.
8. With your left hand, open the door of the flask heater enclosure door.

9. With the right hand, position the flask with the stopper in a vertical position in
the flask heater platform:
a. Insert the vapor tube of the flask in the condenser tube opening.
b. Insert the flask stopper attachment device into the attachment device of
the heater assembly.
NOTE
Tightness between the flask vapor tube and the condenser tube
opening is ensured by the vapor tube sealing ring, which prevents
any escape of vapor during the distillation.
NOTE
The diameter of the hole in the base plate and the presence of a
flask in the flask heater platform are parts of the starting conditions
list displayed in the Run /Start & Display screen. These are tested
when the heater platform is in high position. If the diameter of the
hole in the base plate corresponds to the requirements of the
standard test method selected for the sample group to be tested,
the two corresponding fields becomes green and the diameter of
the hole is automatically displayed in front of the “Base plate:” state
indicator.
NOTE
Do not clean the receiver cylinder after pouring the sample into the
flask, or the result will be false!
1. Press the door latch to open the door of the receiving chamber.
2. Place the receiver in the receiving chamber:
a. First insert the lower end of the condenser tube into the receiver cylinder;
b. Then position the bottom of the receiver cylinder on the receiver stand. It
is automatically centered when the receiver chamber door is closed.
3. Make sure that the tip of the drop plate touches the front inner wall of the
cylinder so that the drops run down the wall.
If the drops fall freely into the liquid in the cylinder, the volume measurement
will not work properly.
4. Check that the rubber cap has well gone down onto the top of the receiver. If
this is not the case, push down the rubber cap to cover the top of the receiver.

OptiDist™ measures the charqe volume in the receiving cylinder and calculates it
to 100% volume for more precise results.
In this case, when the operator presses the New Test button of the Run / Start &
Display screen or after the adjustment of the receiving chamber temperature (if
activated), a yellow dialog box appears indicating the operator can place the
receiving cylinder with sample in the receiving chamber to measure the exact
volume of sample in the receiving cylinder.
NOTE
The New Test button turns into Stop button allowing the operator
aborting the scan.
The Stop button will then turn into Start button allowing starting the
test.
NOTE
When the volume of sample is correct or by aborting the procedure,
the Stop button turns into Start button allowing the operator to start
the test.

The result is saved in the OptiDist™. If the residue is automatically input by the
OptiDist™, the result is immediately displayed according to the parameters of the
report profile set in the product. The result can also be printed and/or sent to the
PC/LIMS. If the residue should be manually input or measured by the OptiDist™,
a dialogue box appears indicating the procedure to follow.
According to the “Residue measurement” parameter set in the product data base
selected to perform the test, the residue can be:
• Predicted by the OptiDist™ using the optimizer.
• Constant (a default residue is entered in the product)
• None (set in the product)
CAUTION
Wait for the distillation flask is cooled before removing it for the res-

7.10.1 Introduction
The OptiDist™ measurement instrumentation requires regular verification. How
often depends on the user, but it is recommended that vapor temperature and
volume measurement system are verified at least once a year.
This section includes instructions for calibration of measurement circuits and
component parameters of your OptiDist™, which are critical to distillation
accuracy.
These circuits and parameters were calibrated prior to shipment from the factory,
but must be checked at regular intervals (see 8.1. Frequency of measurement
checks) and readjusted if necessary.
Calibration of the OptiDist™ is in great part dedicated to the supervisor and
service staff.
NOTE
• To calibrate the measurement circuits and components of the
OptiDist™, a level 1 access (Supervisor) is required.
• With level 2 access (Maintenance) the following additional
functions are available:
- the Service buttons
- the Temperature Correction Table submenu
• An Operator with level 0 access can only:
- calibrate the cursor sensivity of the touch panel
- calibrate the backlight of the screen
- view and print information which is displayed on the Cali-
bration main menu

7. Configure the OptiDist™ to refuse or allow a test start when the calibration is
overdue by pressing on the entry field corresponding to Refuse test:

and to go back to the Calibration main menu.
The OptiDist™ corrects this deviation using the "Vapor Probe Calibration Table".
The vapor temperature probe supplied with the OptiDist™ is equipped with a built-
in memory circuit that can store up to 10 calibration points, the probe identity and
its serial number. The probe correction values are signed (+/-) and rounded to the
nearest 0,01 °C.
The OptiDist™ detects the probe at plug-in and automatically downloads these
calibration parameters into the instrument memory. This guarantees the correct
calibration values for each instrument even if the vapor temperature probe is
replaced or exchanged between different units.
NOTE
A PAC probe with memory for calibration data is required to start a
test.
The Vapor Probe menu enables the display of these values and the user can
modify them if needed.

up again the virtual keypad. Enter the temperature measured by the probe for
the given reference temperature.

You get these values from the calibration certificate delivered with your probe
or from another calibration service. Press the ENTER button to validate it. The
correction is automatically transferred into the memory and displayed in the
vapor probe table.
7. To delete a correction point, press on the entry field corresponding to Item on
the right bottom of the screen. This calls up the virtual keypad. Enter the
number of the line to be deleted and then:
• press the ENTER button to validate the new value;
• or press the ESC button to abort the modification and to go back to the
previous screen.
8. To choose another temperature unit and to convert the values entered in the
vapor probe table, press on the box indicating the temperature unit used
above the table (scroll selection: °C/ °F).
9. Press the Save button to register the new settings or the Exit button to abort
and to go back to the Calibration main menu.

new values.
4. Enter the identity of the PS400 probe simulator used by pressing on the entry

5. Enter the serial number of the PS400 probe simulator used by pressing on the

9. Disconnect the vapor temperature probe on the front of the OptiDist™ and
replace it by the PS400 probe simulator.
10. Set the rotary switch of the PS400 probe simulator to the 50 °C (122 °F)
position.
11. Check the measured temperature value displayed next to Vapor Tmp (first
box on top left of the Diagnostic screen).
12. Wait a few seconds until the temperature reading has stabilized and write
down the measured temperature value displayed next to Vapor Tmp.
13. Then set the rotary switch of the PS400 probe simulator successively to the
positions 100 °C (212 °F), 200 °C (392 °F), 300 °C (572 °F) and 400 °C (752
°F) and write down the displayed corresponding measured temperature value
for each of the rotary switch positions.
14. Press the Exit button of the Diagnostic screen to go back to the Run / Start &
Display screen.
15. Press successively the buttons More > More > Calib. in the Run / Start &
Display screen to return to the Calibration main menu.
16. Press the Tmp Correction Table button and then press the Modif button to
unlock the setting: the Modif button turns into Save button allowing registering
modifications.
17. Enter or modify the name of the temperature correction table by pressing on
the entry field corresponding to Table Name. This calls up the virtual keyboard
allowing keying a name or a number.

21. Enter the previously written down temperature values measured by the unit
for the given reference temperature.

displayed in the Temperature Correction Table);
• or press the ESC button to abort the modification and to go back to the
previous screen.
22. Repeat the above steps until all values in lines 1 to 5 of the Temperature
Correction Table are entered: reference temperature values (Rt) and
corresponding measured values (Mv) according to the PS400 probe simulator
rotary switch positions: 50 °C (122 °F), 100 °C (212 °F), 200 °C (392 °F), 300
°C (572 °F) and 400 °C (752 °F).
23. To delete a correction, press on the entry field corresponding to Item under
Delete a Correction on the right bottom of the screen. This calls up the virtual
keypad. Enter the number of the line to be deleted and then:
• press the ENTER button to validate the entry;
• or press the ESC button to abort the modification and to go back to the
previous screen.
24. To choose another temperature unit and to convert the values entered in the
unit correction table, press on the box indicating the unit used above the table
(scroll selection: °C / °F).
25. After all values are correctly entered, press the Save button to save the
settings or press the Exit button to cancel the action and to return to the
Calibration main menu.

2. Press successively the buttons More > More > Diag. on the Run / Start &
Display screen to open the Diagnostic main menu (see 8.2. Displaying current
readings).
3. Make sure that the PS400 probe simulator is still connected.
4. Set the rotary switch of the PS400 probe simulator to the 50 °C (122 °F)
position.
5. Wait a few seconds until the temperature reading has stabilized and check the
measured temperature value displayed next to Vapor Tmp (first box on top left
of the Diagnostic screen).
NOTE
In comparison with the stated temperature values in the Quality
Control Certificate (delivered with the PS400 probe simulator), the
deviation of the corresponding measured temperature values must
be less than 0,2 °C (0.36 °F).
6. Then set the rotary switch of the PS400 probe simulator successively to the
positions 100 °C (212 °F), 200 °C (392 °F), 300 °C (572 °F) and 400 °C (752
°F) and check the corresponding measured temperature value for each of the
rotary switch positions.
7. If one of the measured temperature values is out of the allowable tolerance,
repeat the calibration of the temperature correction table.
8. To go back to the Run / Start & Display screen, press the Exit button of the
Diagnostic screen.

ment temperature a reference thermometer is required.

The flask heater temperature must be calibrated when not ener-

element next to the temperature measurement thermocouple.
6. Once the temperature reading on the reference thermometer is stable, enter it
by pressing on the entry field corresponding to Reference Read. This calls up
the virtual keypad allowing keying the heating element temperature read on
the reference thermometer.
• Press the ENTER button to validate the new value;
• or press the ESC button to abort the modification and to go back to the
previous screen.
7. Press the Save button to register the settings or the Exit button to abort and to
go back to the Calibration main menu.
NOTE
For access to the service buttons, level 2 access (Maintenance) is
required.

these distillations must be started from the Run / Start & Display

2. Prepare a sample of Toluene and then prepare the OptiDist™.
3. Press the New Test button then parameterize the test: select the product
OPTIMIZER CAL 1 for the distillation of the Toluene or ISO-Octane sample.

When the OPTIMIZER CAL product is validated, the Start button
turns into Calibration button indicating the following distillation is a
calibration run.
4. Insert the sample and the receiver cylinder then press the Calibration button
to start the distillation run.

If the deviation is greater than ±3 mbar carry out the calibration of the atmospheric
pressure measurement.
If there is an abnormal reading displayed, the atmospheric pressure sensor may
be disconnected or faulty. Call for a qualified technician.
If the OptiDist™ does not indicate the expected value, calibrate the vapor
temperature measurement circuit, see 7.10.4. Vapor probe circuit calibration.

press on the Command button to quit the diagnostic mode.
NOTE
Power on the pump to flow the heat exchanging liquid in the con-

(assuming the exchanger temperature is < 0 °C) of temperature of
the condenser bath will be more rapid and homogeneous.

chamber, power on the fan (see 8.4.5.3. Receiving chamber fan).
The receiving chamber temperature indicated just above should begin to rise
after few seconds. If not, the heating element or its supply circuit is failing.
3. Check the supply circuit of the heating element of the receiving chamber using
the Doctor Box or call for a qualified technician to check the supply circuit and
heating element operation.
4. Press again on the entry field modified and stop the heating command or
press on the Command button to quit the diagnostic mode.

The receiving chamber fan allows the air flowing in the receiving
chamber during heating or cooling. If this fan is not powered on, the
temperature of the receiving chamber will not be homogeneous
and the temperature indicated opposite Receiver will not evolve in
linear way.
2. Check the supply circuit of the receiving chamber fan using the Doctor Box or
call for a qualified technician to check the supply circuit and the fan operation.
3. To stop the command, press on the Fan button again or press on the
Command button to quit the diagnostic mode.

Note: This command is only available if the VOC control option is
installed.
1. Press on the VOC pump button to start the extraction pump of the volatile
organic components.
The VOC Pump should start up: disconnect the exhaust pipe at the rear of the
OptiDist™, to check the air in the receiving chamber is being moved at a rapid
rate. If not, the VOC pump or its supply circuit is failing.
2. Check the supply circuit of the VOC pump using the Doctor Box or call for a
qualified technician to check the supply circuit and the VOC pump operation.
3. To stop the command, press on the VOC pump button again or press on the
Command button to quit the diagnostic mode.
Conversion counts on the optical receptors according conversion count of the optical trans-
mitter:
Conversion count on the transmitter Conversion count on the receptor
0 points > 4000 points (provided the OptiDist™ is away
from direct sunlight)

3. Pass an object, e.g. a pencil, between the emitter and the receiver of the first
drop optical detector. The indicator lamp opposite the entry field Transm:
should light.
4. Press again on the entry field and stop the transmitter.
5. If the conversion count of the receptor is out of the boundary, first clean the
drop detection optical fork.
6. Restart the test. If the problem persists, call for a qualified technician to
replace the drop detection optical fork.

1. Activate the diagnostic mode (see 8.4.1. Activate the diagnostic mode).
2. Press on the CoolSyst button to start the cooling unit of the OptiDist™
(provided the OptiDist™ has been switched on for 2 min)
You should hear the cooling unit starting up and the temperature of the
exchanger of the cooling system should decrease. If not, the cooling unit or its
supply circuit is failing.
3. Check the supply circuit of the cooling unit using the Doctor Box or call for a
qualified technician to check the supply circuit and cooling unit operation.
4. Press on the CoolSyst button again to stop the command or press on the
Command button to quit the diagnostic mode.
NOTE
If the Command button is not pressed, the OptiDist™ remains in
diagnostic mode, all regulations are switched off and a test run can-
not be started.
2. Press the Exit button and confirm that you want to quit the diagnostic mode
and to return to the Run / Start & Display screen.

The optional available Doctor Box allows rapid diagnostics of the OptiDist™
components and electronic boards without need for OptiDist™ disassembly.

WARNING
Switch off the OptiDist™ and disconnect it from the mains before
removing a housing.

require you to switch on the OptiDist™, switch it off again before
disconnecting or removing any electrically powered components.
1. Remove the 2 screws (A) on the top of the OptiDist™ main housing.
2. Remove the 3 screws (A) on the left hand side of the OptiDist™ main housing.
3. Remove the left part (B) of the OptiDist™ main housing by pulling it to the rear
and then to the left.
4. Remove the 3 screws (A) on the right hand side of the OptiDist™ housing.
5. Remove the right part (C) of the OptiDist™ main housing by pulling it to the
rear and then to the right.

1. To control the heating element coil, remove the distillation flask heater
assembly housing.
2. Control, that the coils of the heating element do not touch each other to avoid
a hot spot.
3. If the coils touch each other, separate the coils with a flat-bladed screwdriver.
If this is not sufficient, replace the heating element.
4. Reassemble the base plate and the distillation flask heater assembly housing.

CAUTION
Wear protective cloves if you have to cut off the distillation flask sili-
cone tube to avoid all cut and burn hazards .
1. Pull-off the condenser/distillation flask silicone tube (A) carefully or cut it off
with caution if it is stuck to the condenser tube.
2. Attach a new condenser/distillation flask silicone tube to the condenser tube.
CAUTION
When replacing the rubber cap, wear protective gloves to avoid all
cut and burn hazards .
1. Pull-off the the rubber cap (A) carefully to slide it over the drip tip.
2. Attach a new rubber cap to the condenser tube.

OptiDist™ Maintenance
NOTE
The distillation flask stopper assembly is specially designed for the
precise adjustment of the probe positioning in the stopper and so,
in the distillation flask.
The vapor temperature probe is equipped with a built-in memory circuit including
up to 10 correction values, the probe identity and its serial number. Thus, no
adjustment is necessary: the OptiDist™ automatically recognizes the probe and
imports data at plug-in avoiding manual entry of probe correction values and
probe ID.
NOTE
PAC probe is required. If another probe is used, a new test will not
be able to start.
To display these correction values and adjust the calibration frequency of the
vapor temperature probe, see 7.10.3. Vapor probe calibration.
To order a new probe, please see spare part list for the item (the probe, wiring and
connector cannot be dismantled).

NOTE
The heat exchanging liquid must be ordered at PAC (see the spare
part list). It is important to use coolant provided by PAC for correct
operation of your OptiDist™, as its properties are particularly com-
patible with the application.

NOTE
To obtain accurate and repeatable results, prepare the samples
and OptiDist™ with particular care as described in the following
sections.
CAUTION

1. Shut off the external gas supply and disconnect it from the fire extinguisher
gas inlet at the rear of the OptiDist™.
2. Approach a naked flame (e.g. a cigarette lighter flame) to the vicinity of the
flame detector, located on the right side of the distillation flask heater
assembly.

NOTE
The flame detection audio alarm remains active until the OptiDist™
is switched off, even if the fault has been acquitted and the flame
has been extinguished.
CAUTION
If a real fire detection and extinction operation is performed, should
it be after an accident or during testing by setting fire to a sample in
the distillation flask compartment, then the test described in this
section should be used to verify that the flame detector works cor-
rectly.
When a real fire has been extinguished, it is strongly advised to
open windows in order to air the laboratory (extinction gas being
CO2).
The series contact provided for the connection of the user’s external alarm device
functions as an ON/OFF switch for the user’s device: this series contact has 2
connection positions such that when a fire is detected:
• 1-2 normally closed
• 2-3 normally opened
NOTE
To stop the alarm, the OptiDist™ must be switched off

CAUTION
Generally when the alarm buzzer is triggered, the operator must
display the cause and ensure that everything is working correctly.
For example, owing to a faulty component an alarm that normally should place the
OptiDist™ in idle mode fails to do so. In that case, the operator must switch off the
OptiDist™.
1. Press the OK button to acquit the alarm and stop the buzzer.
2. Check causes of alarm setting of: see 10.4. List of alarm messages and
troubleshooting.
