COVID-19 Live Tracker and Social Awareness
While the COVID-19 outbreak was reported to first originate
from Wuhan, China, it has been declared as a Public Health
Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 30 January
2020 by WHO, and it has spread to over 190 countries. As the
disease spreads around the globe, it has evolved into a world-
wide pandemic, endangering the state of global public health and
becoming a serious threat to the global community. To combat
and prevent the spread of the disease, all individuals should be
well-informed of the rapidly changing state of COVID-19. In the
endeavour of accomplishing this objective, a COVID-19 live
tracker has been built to provide the latest status of the disease
and relevant analytical insights. The live tracker is designed to
cater to the general audience without advanced statistical
aptitude. It aims to communicate insights through various
straightforward and concise data visualizations that are
supported by reliable data sources. This tracker provides
COVID-19 related data of over 200 countries along with
providing social awareness about some common symptoms and
information about other common diseases.

The contagious coronavirus, or more technically known as
COVID-19, has spread all over the world and is listed as a
pandemic by the World Health Organization. It started surfacing in
China in November 2019 and has been on the rise in all major
parts of the world. On 27th July, 2020, more than 16.52M cases of
COVID-19 were reported in about 187 countries and territories.
On 30th January, 2020, the first case of coronavirus pandemic in
India was reported, and the number of cases in India has now
reached more than 1.48M. We have developed a live COVID-19
tracker to keep track of all the data related to COVID-19.
To ensure the accuracy and the reliability of the tracker’s content,
the website’s server retrieves the newest data from the COVID-19
data repository by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering
at Johns Hopkins University when any user tries to load the web
page. The data repository is regulated by the Johns Hopkins
University Center for Systems Science and Engineering and
supported by the ESRI Living Atlas Team and the Johns Hopkins
University Applied Physics Lab. According to the documentation
of the repository, the data source is being updated in real-time
numerous times throughout the day, and the validity of the data is
verified by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. The content
displayed in the overview feature is therefore derived from a real-
time and reliable data source.

Real Time Data Retrieval
To achieve real-time data retrieval, the webserver contains a
protocol to download and ingest the data source from the CSSE
data repository by Johns Hopkins University when a request is sent
to the server when a user tries to access the web page in a browser.
When the server receives such requests, it will attempt to download
the data by getting the current date and accessing the data source
with an updated URL. Once the data file is downloaded
successfully, it will be ingested and stored temporarily on the
server. Subsequently, the pre-specified R script will read the data
and pre-process it into different data frames to support the insights
to be derived on the web page. If the download were to be
unsuccessful due to unforeseen circumstances, the web server will
load up the most recent data file that it has ingested previously to
support the content on the web page. The server will also log such
errors so that they could be handled to improve the robustness of
the tracker. Figure 5.1 provides a visual summary of the real-time
data retrieval process.

Real time data
 This tracker provides real time COVID-19 related statistics such
as total cases from beginning of pandemic, active cases, new
cases, total deaths, death ratio, new deaths, total recoveries and
recovery ratio of more than 200 countries around the globe.
Details about other diseases in combination with COVID-19
 This tracker provides critical information about symptoms and
complications about other diseases which occur in combination
with COVID-19.
Spread Awareness
 By providing accurate covid-19 related data we can spread
awareness about the disease and reduce the severity of the
pandemic.
Finding the disease based on symptoms and taking the utmost
care
 This tracker provides symptomatic information to identify the
disease, so that diseases can be prevented in prior.
