REFLECTION PAPER ON THE MOVIE “DED NA SI LOLO”

The movie was about the impact of various Filipino cultures, it also featured the practices and
attitudes of every cast in the movie and how they cope up with different situations. In the film, there
are lots of categories and lessons being portrayed which includes following different superstitious
beliefs, women empowerment, the hierarchy of power, gender roles gender inequalities, unity,
impolite behaviors and being toxic of Filipino people.
We’ve witness in the movie different categories of the famous issues on living in the society
every day. One of these is that we Filipinos are fond of following various of traditions specially the
superstitious beliefs that even if it does not have an origin they still believe on what our ancestors say
and this is the reason why they still do or believe it to this day. This behavior in every Filipinos can’t
be replaced because it’s really the norm.
Also, for women empowerment and gender roles which is really evident just when the movie
started, how Charing a mother’s empowering the households with her impressive vocals to command,
remind, or advise her children. On the other hand, the decisions and choices depend on the father.
Another is when Dolores makes the major decisions and it should be the one to be followed
because she holds the hierarchy power among her younger siblings. Additionally, she was the eldest
and most experienced and has capabilities to do so.
For gender inequality and criticisms, it is when Dolores criticizes the ability and the dignity of
the friends of Junee which is part of the LGBTQ+ community, she thinks of them as worthless
individuals in the society which is also the problem in our society today.
For unity and toxic behavior of the Filipino people, we’ve seen in the movie how people
offered help for the family whose mourning which is embedded to the Filipinos because when a
person needs help they are always ready to volunteer without expecting anything in return. But
sometimes, they also intervene with family problems, like in the movie the siblings are fighting and
their neighborhoods rush to hear them fighting which is not appropriate because it is for private and
family matters only.
All Filipinos can relate to this movie because it was a total package, it teaches life lessons that
we should apply and adopt for our daily lives. It was ironic, interesting, and recommended to watch.
