Seeking Your King

In the Image of God

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the
livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and
female he created them” (Gen. 1:26-27).
We live in a world of competing worldviews (i.e., how you view the world, your perspective on
reality and truth). For example, one pervading worldview in our society at large is the naturalistic
worldview. The view that says mankind is of no more value than the squirrel that scurried across
your lawn this morning. Or your life and worth is somehow equal with that of the gorilla you and
your kids saw at the zoo.
Among all the confusion, lies and idle chatter of society, there stands One whose Word holds
true no matter what. This One is the God of the Universe, the Lord God Almighty (Jn. 17:17).
In His word He says that mankind is made in the image of God. This includes both male and
female. This statement is where our identity, worth, and our purpose is found.
Every single person no matter their intellect, economic status, race, and even moral code is
made in the image of God. This is the blessing that our gracious God has bestowed on all of us.
Why is this Important?
It is paramount that we internalize this truth that “mankind is made in the image of God”. One
reason that we continue witness the violent hate crimes in our society is because we’ve
forgotten that we’re made in the image of our Creator.
On the sixth day of creation, our glorious God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life
and man became a living soul” (Gen. 2:7). God took much care when He created us. For
though we are a little lower than the angels, God crowned us with glory and honor (Psa. 8:6).
He even gave us dominion over this beautiful earth that He spoke into existence in the
beginning (Gen. 1:28).
He sent His Only Begotten Son to rescue His image bearers that were enslaved to the devil, sin,
death, condemnation, fear of death, and the second death (Heb. 2:14-16; Col. 1:13-14; Jn. 14:1-
6; Eph. 2:1-10).
Whenever we look at our fellow man no matter how annoyed or angry, they may make us, let us
remember that they’re made in God’s image. Also, if you’re reading this, please remember that
you are made in God’s image, according to His likeness (Gen. 1:27).
Concluding Thoughts
According to Ephesians 4:24, God desires you to become a new man according to His spiritual
and moral likeness. This new man can only be found if you’re in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). You get
into Christ by being baptized into Him (Rom. 6).
Why not strip off the old man today and become a new man by belief in Christ Jesus,
repentance, and baptism for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:37-42; Mk. 16:15-16; 1 Pet. 3:17-
22).
