APPLICATIONS OF LENSES

1. Magnifying glass:
A magnifying glass is a biconvex lens used to observe small object. When
the object is placed between the focal length and the lens large image is
formed. The image formed magnifying glass is virtual, upright, and larger
than the size of the object as shown below
2. The microscope (the compound microscope)
A microscope or a compound microscope is used to observe tiny objects.
It consists of two convex (converging) lenses (objective lens and eyepiece
with a short focal length). The lens closer to the object is called the
objective lens, while the other lens is called eyepiece lens.
3. The reflecting telescope (Newtonian telescope):
The Newtonian telescope use a large concave primary mirror to collect
and focus incoming light into a flat secondary (diagonal) mirror that, in
turn reflects the image out of the opening at the side of the main tube
and into an eyepiece. The eyepiece contains one or more lenses of short
focal length.
