PROBLEM: Show that every group G with identity e and such that x∗x=e for all x ∈ G
is abelian. [Hint: Consider ( a∗b )∗(a∗b)¿
Answer:
Following the hint, we could derive that for all a , b ∈G .
( a∗b )∗( a∗b )=e
¿
( a∗b )∗( a∗( ( b∗b )∗a) )=b∗a
( a∗b )∗( a∗a )=b∗a
a∗b=b∗a
So, the operation is commutative and therefore G is abelian.

PROBLEM: Prove that every cyclic group is abelian.

Answer:
Proof:
Let G be a cyclic group and let a be a generator of G so that
n
G=¿ a≥ {a ∨n∈ Z }
If g1 and g2 are any two elements of G, ∃ integers r and s such that g1=ar and g2=as .
Then
r s r +s s +r s r
g1 g 2=a a =a =a =a a =g1 g 2 ,
so G is abelian.
