IMPACT ON CITY

During the 19th century the White House became a symbol of

American democracy.

In the minds of most Americans, the building was not a “palace” from
which the president ruled but merely a temporary office and residence
from which he served the people he governed.

The White House belonged to the people, not the president, and the
president occupied it only for as long as the people allowed him to stay.
DESIGN DECISIONS
James Hoban, an architect of Irish descent. His neo-
classical design is presumably based on the Leinster
House in Dublin.
The Neoclassical design of the White House is based
primarily on ideas inherited from the Roman
architect Vitruvius and the Venetian architect Andrea
Palladio
Jcqueline Kennedy, wife of President John
F.Kennedy, directed a very extensive and historic
redecoration of the house. The first White House
guide book was produced with direct supervision
from Jacqueline Kennedy. Sale of the guide book
helped finance the restoration.
COMPARISION WITH SIMILARITIES
A 16,500-square-foot (1,530 m2) model exists. It was built in
2001 by Atlanta home builder Fred Milani, an American citizen
born in Iran.

A replica of the White House has been built in the capital city of
the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

A 7/8 replica of the south portico of the White House is a

prominent part of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Museum.
