" A tale of two Cities " Ch.1


1- How was the life in London and Paris in 1775 ?
 They were on the brink of revolution king of England
was buys in his problems with the American colonies .
King Louis XVI of France was concerned with pleasure
and wealth . They didn't care about the poor people .
2- Why were travelers feared for their safety?
 Because crime in England was much so there were
guards with Coaches.
3- I must speak to one of the passengers heading for Dover.
Comment
 Jerry cruncher from Tellson's Bank . He followed the
mail carriage to tell Mr Jarvislorry to wait for a young
lady , Miss Manette.
4- Recalled to life . Comment
 That was Mr. Lorry's reply to the Bank's message . He
meant that Manette recalled to life after long years in
Bastelle Prison.
5- What scene did Mr. Lorry have in his dream ?
 He dreamt that he was digging a man out of a grave
telling him that he was recalled to life . He meant Dr.
Manette after eighteen years in prison came back.
6- Do you know that you are being recalled to life ?
 Mr. lorry to a ghost in his dream .

7- Describe Lucie Manette.


 She was about seventeen , short , slim , pretty girl with
long golden hair and blue eyes.
8- Why did the messenger , Jerry want Mr. Lorry?
 To tell him to wait for Miss Luice Manette to go with
him to Paris .
9- I received a letter yesterday from Tellson's Bank ,
informing me about a discovery .
 Luice Manette to Mr. Lorry Because she thought there
were something was discovered belonged to her father
and she would own it , But the discovery was her father
who was out of Prison.
10- What did Mr. Lorry remember once he saw Luice ?
 He recalled fifteen years ago when she was a child and he
took her from France to England.
11- It is a story you know because it was you , Who brought
me to England .
 Miss Luice Manette to Mr. Lorry after he told her that her
father's story and how he know her.
12- What did Mr. Lorry tell Luice about her father ?
 He told her that her father was disappeared and sent to
Prison not died by a powerful enemy.

14- Why did Luice and Mr. Lorry go to Paris ?
 Because Dr. Manette was freed from Prison , Mr. Lorry
would identify him and Luice would comfort him and
restore his health.
15- I will see his ghost , not him .
 Luice to Mr. Lorry . When he told her about her father ,
Dr. Manette and how they would see him after being
imprisoned.
16- Why couldn't you tell her what you had to without
frightening her to death ?
 Miss Pross who took care of Luice to Mr. Lorry after he
told her about her father and she fainted , then he called
for help.

1- How was the life of " Saint Antoine" ?
 It was a poor section of Paris , filled with hunger , cold
and sick . It was unrest place that exploded in the French
Revolution.
2- Describe the scene of the broken cask showing the
significance.
 A large barrel of wine was dropped and broken in the
street of Saint Antoine . The wine was red . All the
people left their work and ran to drink , sip , dip clothes
to get drops by any means . Someone wrote blood on a
wall to show that the angry peasants were eager to
revolution because of their bad conditions.
3- Let the people from the market bring another cask. It's
their fault . Comment
 Mr. Defarge to the workman after dropping the cask of
wine . He was angry of the running crowd to lick up the
wine .
4- What was Madame Defarge doing ?
 She was knitting , but observing everything round her .
She was the wife of Mr. Defarge.
5- Why did Luice and Mr. Lorry go to Mr. Defarge ?
 Because Mr. Defarge kept Dr. Manette , Luice's fat her
who was released from Prison and in bad condition.

1- I see you are still working hard. Comment
 Mr. Defarge to Dr Manette . When he took Luice and Mr.
Lorry to recognize him for the first time Dr. Manette was
working on a shoe .
2- How was Luice's feelings when she first entered to see her
father ?
 She was afraid and very weak . She was in a very bad
state to see her father after being imprisoned for so long.
3- Describe D. Manette at the first time .
 He was so weak , hollow face , white beard and hair ,
dark eyebrows . His shirt was yellowed in rays . He was
making a shoe. He couldn't remember any thing.
4- It is a lady's shoe , A young Lady's walking shoe .
Comment
 Dr. Manette to Mr. Defarge . When he asked the doctor
what he was working an as the doctor meant `he worked
on his wife's shoe . He learnt to make shoes in prison.
5- One hundred and five North tower . Comment
 Dr. Manette to Mr. Defarge after he asked him about his
name . That number was the cell in which Dr. Manette
had been imprisoned for 18 years .
6- I was your banker , and he was your trusted servant .
Don't you remember that . Comment

 Mr. Lorry said that to Dr. Manette trying to remind him
by the people he knew before being imprisoned . But Dr.
Manette couldn't remember anything.
7- You are not the Jailer's daughter ? . Comment
 Dr. Manette to his daughter Luice . He thought she was
the Jauler's daughter , not him he remembered her by her
golden hair which looked like her mother's .
8- What did Dr. Manetted remember when he saw Luice's
hair ?
 He remembered the night when he was called out of the
house and taken to prison. He remembered how his wife
was afraid , and he took some of her hair to keep for him.
9- You will learn my name at another time . All I can tell you
now is that your misery is ended .
 Luice to her father Dr. Manette after he recognized her
from his wife's hair . She comforted him and took him to
England as France was still dangerous for him .

Ch.4 " The Trial of Charles Darnay "


1- What was Charles Darnay accused of ?
 He was accused of passing government secrets to the
French king about the troops England was sending to
North America.

2- Why were Dr. Manette , Mr Lorry and Luice called to
testify against the prisoner Charles Darnay ?
 Because they had traveled from France to England in the
same boat five years before.
3- Who was the first witness ? What did he say about
Charles Darnay?
 Mr. John Barsad was the first witness and he said that he
had discovered Charles traitorous schemes , so he
reported them to the government .
4- Who was the second witness ? What did he say about
Charles ?
 Roger Cly , Darnay's servant . He saw some papers
listing the troops and military equipment that England
sent to America . He saw them in his pockets and in his
desk .
5- What did Luice say in the court ?
 She said that Charles had traveled with them on the same
boat . He treated her father in a kind way , but she said
that he was with two French gentlemen and were looking
at some papers and whispering.
6- Mr. Darnay was so kind to my father . Comment
 Luice said these words to the solicitor , she meant that
Darnay was a kind man and she didn't want to harm him .

7- How did Mr. Stryver sum up his defense ?
 He said that John Barsad was a liar , Roger Cly a hired
spy and traitor and the final witness could not really
identify the prisoner as the man he had seen at the hotel.
8- What was the verdict?
 Chaides Darnay was not guilty.
9- What part did Mr. Carton play during the trial ?
 Mr. carton drew Mr. Stryver's attention to the two men
(Sidney Carton and Charles Darnay), they looked so
much alike .
10- "Here are two look–a likes, that fate has thrown
together." Comment
 Sidney Carton said these words to Charles Darnay after
the trial , he meant that They looked a like , so fate saved
Charles Darnay from the trial.
11- Why did Sidney Carton drink a lot of wine ?
 He drank a lot of wine because he was disappointed with
life . He was failure at work and friends . He cared for no
man and no man cared for him.

12- "I care for no man and no man cared for me" . Comment
 Sidney Carton said these words to Charles Darnay . He
meant he had no hope in life he felt that no one takes care
of him and he had no one to love or cared for anyone.

Comment
 Mr. Stryver said these words to Sidney Carton . He meant
that Carton lived aimlessly . He could help other people ,
but not himself.

Ch.5 " A moment of Terror "


1- What did Mr. Lorry notice in doctor Manette's room ?
 Mr. Lorry noticed and fixed his eyes on the shoemaker's
bench and tools, which reminded them of Dr Manette's
years of suffering in prison.
2- I was just wondering why the doctor still keeps those
things. Comment
 Hr. Lorry said these words to Miss Pross when he saw
the shoemaker's tools in Dr Manette's room. He asked her
why they kept the tools although Dr Manette had
recovered.
3- What did Charles Darnay talk about ? What was the
effect on Dr Manette ?
 He talked about his prison and the old dungeon's wall
was covered with names, dates and complaints written by
the prisoners. The workmen found the ashes of paper
which was hidden from the jailer. Dr Manette

remembered his days in prison and terror spread across
his face.

Ch.6
1What did the Marquis coach do with the little child ?
 The coach had killed the little boy when the coach was
running very quickly.
2 " I can't understand why you people can't take care of
yourselves and your children " Comment
 the Marquis said these words to the child's father after the
child had died . The Marquis had meant that poor people
hadn't taken care of their children.
3 "Be brave , Gasper ! It is better for the child to die
without pain than to live with the pain …….. " Comment.
 Defarge said these words to the child's father he meant
that's better for the child to die of living in pain and
hunger like his father.
4 What did the Marquis give the child's father ?
 He gave him a gold coin. The Marquis thought that every
thing was baught with money even people's life.
5 What did the road fixer tell the Marquis ?
 He told the Marquis . While the carriage was coming
along the road outside the village , he saw a man
swinging by the chain under neath it.
6 Why did Charles visit his uncle ?

 Charles visited his Uncle to make up for the wrongs his
father and his uncle had done.

7-What did Charles decide to do ?


 He decided to live in London and to work to support
himself.
8-"He Is Ready for his Tomb . From Jacques " Comment
 these words were written on the note left by the father's
child after killing the Marquis.

Ch.7
1- How did Charles lead his life in London ?
 he became a popular and successful teacher and translator
of French.
2- What did Charles ask Dr. Manette?
 He asked Manette for Lucie's hand in marriage.
3- Did luice fin her father ? what did she do ?
 She found him working at his shoemaker's bench , so she
walked with him beak and forth for many hours till his
sleeping hours.
4- What was Sidney's confession to Luice?
 He confessed that he loved her .

to change his way of life . He answer that he couldn't

her to be beside her and to scarify his life for her.

Ch.8
1- What did Jerry Cruncher and his son see?
 They saw the funeral of Roger Cly the man who was at
Charles Darnay's trial.
2- " Whenever you fish at night , your boots get so dirty
and you get rust under your fingernails "Comment
 Jerry Cruncher's son said these words to his father . The
son meant that his father went fishing , but he never
brought any fish.
3- What did Jerry Cruncher's son discover?
 He discovered that his father was a grave robber. He and
his friend went to the churchyard to rob the graves.
4- Why was the funeral of Roger Cly unusual?
 Because people were running a long side the carriage ,
shouting " spies"
5- To what extent was Jerry cruncher attracted to the
funerals?

burial of the spy Roger Cly . Then at night he went to dig
the grave telling his family he would go fishing and
raised the coffin.

Ch.9
1- What was Madame Defarge main interest ?
 Because people were running a long side the carriage ,
shouting " spies" was interested in keeping a list for spies
and enemies to the revolution in a special pattern and
design while she was knitting .
2- "He is a fixer of roads. Give my new friend some
breakfast." comment
 Defarge to his wife after he brought a man who saw
Gasbard hanged and killed by the men of Marquis .
Defarge invited him to say the story and put the Marquis
family in the enemies list.
3- "Now that all of our good "Jacques " are here ?"
Comment
 Defarge used the code " Jacques " to identify the
revolutionaries who were sitting with him. They were
talking about Gasbard and how he was killed.
4- What happened to Gaspard ? Gaspard suffered twice
from the Marquis injustice . Show
 the Marquis Carriage ran over Gaspard Child and killed
her. As a result , Gaspard killed the Marquis in his bed .
Later Gaspard disappeared from the soldiers , but finally
he was caught and hanged from a gallows forty feet high
in the village.

5- What did the "list of enemies' names " refer to ?
 The list was knitted in certain pattern by Madame Defarge .
This list contained names of people and nobles who caused
a lot of miserable to the poor peasants in France . The
revolutionaries kept it to revenge after the revolution .
6- "Are you sure that problems won't arise as a result of our
keeping this list of our enemies names ?" comment
 These words were said by Jacques four to Mr. Defarge
when they talked about the officials who killed Gaspard
to be in the list . They would revenge any one in the list
to be killed after the revolution.
7- "To be listed as doomed for destruction ! " comment
 Defarge to Jacques when they referred to the officials
who killed Gaspard to be killed and revenge from them .
8- "He will be put on my list as soon as I see him". comment
 Madame Defarge said that to Mr. Defarge when he told
her that a spy had come to saint Antoine . They decided
to put his name on the list of enemies . That spy's name
was John Barsad.
9- "These miserable people are badly treated too, isn't that
so". Comment
 John Barsad to Madame Defarge when he wanted to spy
and get any information from her about the
revolutionaries, and Gaspard.

Gaspard . Don't you think so"
 John Barsad to Madame Defarge when he wanted to spy

11- "You are mistaken, sir . That is not my name, I am Ernest
Defarge."
 Defarge said that to John Barsad who came to saint
Antoine to spy and get information from the
revolutionaries . Defarge denied his remark.
12- "The girl is going to be married " Married to a French
man by birth …….. " comment
 John Barsad said that to Mr. Defarge and his wife John
was referring to Luice Manette and Charles Darnay as he
knews they hated the Marquis Family and that Charles
Darnay was an enemy to the revolutionaries .
13- Why was Defarge shocked when he heard that Luice
would marry Charles Darnay ?
 Because Charles Darnay was a nephew of the Marquis
that Gaspard Killed and Madame Defarge put his name
on the enemies list who would be killed He hoped for
Luice's sake to keep Darnay a way from France.
14- "Fate will lead him where he has to go!"
 Madame Defarge to her husband Defarge when he felt
sad for Luice who would marry Charles Darnay . They
