SUITE FOR TIMPANI by MURRAY HOULLIF — rom the haeeeee 0 Jillian Abraham To the Performer: This is a contemporary composition in three movements which gives the timpanist an oppor- tunity to display virtuosity of technique, beauty of tone production, dynamic contrast/accents, rhythmic drive and excitement, musical sensitivity, etc. It is a suitable work for recital, jury or solo festival. Each movement employs a low F which can be used as a point of tuning reference. There are no pitch changes within the movements. Mvt. 1 - In a moderate tempo; Me eighth note remains constant throughout. Be sure to play double-stops exactly together, count/subdivide rhythms precisely as written, bring out all accents and carefully observe dynamics. The Ab drum gives this movement a quasi-“bluesy” feeling. Suggested Mallets: General or Medium Felt Mvt. 2 - Slow and without measures; the performer may take some liberties with silences (ests). Strive for a warm, resonant tone. The F major chord tuning lends a feeling of peace, calmness and serenity. Be expressive! ‘Suggested Mallets: Large, soft felt Mvt. 3 - This movement is fast and furious, displaying technical virtuosity through dynamic shading/contrast, accents and rhythmic drive. Try to convey a jolly, happy feeling when you play this one! Suggested Mallets: Very hard felt or wood. This solo is dedicated to Sandy Feldstein.
