1.

Briefly choose one aspect of news coverage that defines the difference between then &
now, (regarding live news coverage)?

The main takeaway that I had from the Tiananmen Square clip was the film quality and editing.
The film quality is fairly grainy, cameras have come a long way and even with our phones we
can film things that look like they were filmed professionally. News studios also tend to cut and
zoom a lot more, possibly to hold people's attention instead of playing a clip and it’s entirety
without any music or anything to accompany the visuals.

2. Why do you think global literacy is so important today? Your Point Of View (POV) now. It
might change by the end of this class.

I think that it is more important now than ever because with the advent of the Internet
misinformation spreads far more easily than it used to. My own father gets a majority of his
news from Facebook, and we all know how reliable that can be. Global literacy is vital if we are
to consider who is saying the message and what that message means in that context. The video
that we were supposed to watch for this assignment had actually been taken down in the
original link, videos like that are being taken down by the Chinese government with the recent
protests and pandemic that originated there. Agenda setting is more relevant now than ever, as
countries are utilizing the new channels of visual communication to carefully craft a public image
in the global sphere.
