GRADE 8 - SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

FIRST QUARTER

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT 8.1.1

Directions: Read each item carefully and give what is asked.

I. Matching Type: Match the polynomials in Column A with their factors in Column B. Write the
letter of the correct answer. (1 point each)

Column A Column B
3
1. x +x A. (x+2)(x-2)
2. 25x2-16 B. 4(x+2)
3. x3-8 C. (x+2)(x+2)
4. 4x+8 D. (x-4)(x+1)
5. x2+2x+1 E. x(x2+1)
6. x2-4 F. (x-2)(x2+2x+4)
7. x2+3x+2 G. (5x+4)(5x-4)
8. x3+8 H. (x+2)(x+1)
9. x2-3x-4 I. (x+2)(x2-2x+4)
10. x2+4x+4 J. (x+1)(x+1)
K. (x+4)(x-1)

II. Fill in the box: Complete the factors of each polynomial by filling in the box with the correct
mathematical expression. (1 point each)
1. 2x3+12x2-4x = (x2+6x-2)
6
2. 27x -64 = (3x2-4) ( +12x2+16)
3. x2+8x+15 = (x+5) (x+ )

III. Problem Solving: Read each problem carefully and give what is asked. Show the complete
solution and box the final answer.
1. The side of a square is (2x-1) cm. What is the area of the square? (2 points)
2. Can the difference of two squares be applied to 3x 3-12x? If yes, how? If no, why? Justification
may be shown through explanation or solution. (3 points)
Answer Key;
I. Matching Type:
1. E
2. G
3. F
4. B
5. J
6. A
7. H
8. I
9. D
10. C

II. Fill in the box.

1. 2x
2. 9x4
3. 3

III. Problem Solving

1. (2x-1)(2x-1) ------> 1 point
= 4x2-4x+1 -------> 1 point
∴ The area of the square is 4x2-4x+1 cm2.

2. Yes, the difference of two squares can be applied to 3x 3-12x after factoring out the GCMF. So,
3x(x2-4) can be factored as; 3x(x+2)(x-2).

Rubrics:
Points Description
1 A simple yes or no
2 A simple yes with a short explanation
3 Yes with a thorough explanation and/or solution
