ie Nig 9D | FOUNDRY TECHNOLOGY Foundry technology deals with the processes of making metal products in moulds formed in either sand or some other material. The metal products are called castings and are produced by pouring molten metal into moulds, with cores used to create hollow internal sections. After the metal has cooled sufficiently, the casting is separated from the mould and undergoes cleaning and finishing techniques as appropriate. The term casting refers both the metal product as well as the process. Foundry is a section of a factory where the casting process is carried out, Foundry process entails the following operations or stages: Pattern making * Mould making/Dressing + Core making + Gating system design ‘= Melting and pouring © Shake out or knock out * Fettling/cleaning «Sand reclamation ‘Advantages of Foundry/Casting Process 7 Some of the advantages of casting process over other manufacturing processes are: 1, Complex shapes: - casting can be used to create complex part geometries, including both external and internal shapes, 2, Net-shape ability: - some casting processes are capable of producing parts to net shape, No further manufacturing operations are required to achieve the required geometry and dimensions of the part, 3, Very large parts: - casting can be used to produce very large parts, It is possible to produce castings weighing more than 100 tons. 4, Variety of metals: - casting process can be performed on any metal that can be heated to the liquid state, 5, Mass production: - some casting methods are quite suited to mass production Disadvantages of Casting Process There are also disadvantages essocisted with casting - different disadvantages for different castings methods. These include limitations on porosity, poor dimensional
