CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
A business process is a set of actions taken by a number of stakeholders to accomplish a
specific objective. A task is allocated to a participant at each stage of a business process. It
serves as the essential building block for a number of related concepts, including process
automation and business process management. Despite the abundance of information that has
been published and spoken about business process management, it is crucial to comprehend
why it is so crucial to your company.

Business process mapping is a potent tool used in business process management (BPM) to
graphically represent process phases and demonstrate how a process ought to run from
beginning to end. This method presents business processes visually so that all stakeholders in
your organisation may comprehend and follow them. Charts, flowcharts, and symbols are
used in business process mapping to address the following three crucial inquirie ssuch as

 What actions are included in the process?

 Who performs each task?
 Which task occurs when?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The study carried out at FIT LTD has the following goals:

• To quickly research furniture manufacturing in the sector.

•To use process discovery techniques to pinpoint and formally establish the fundamental
business processes in a company.

• To compile "As-is" process flaws and assemble important data sets proving these flaws.

• To propose "To-be" procedures in order to determine the viability of process redesign

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study is a resource for learning more about the crucial steps in producing tea dust in
various grades. The study is based on information gathered from the estate through a
literature analysis and direct conversations with the employees. I was able to become familiar
with Process Discovery and Process Re-engineering approaches.
METHOD OF STUDY
For the purpose of fully completing the report, the study also involved personal observation, a
review of the literature, and interviews. The study's data were categorised as Primary and
secondary.

PRIMARY SOURCES

The core information was gathered through in-person interviews, conversations with
company employees, and on-the-job physical observations.

SECONDARY SOURCES

The secondary sources comprised: Office records, organisational manuals, and annual
records. Departmental manuals, the company's official website. The information gathered
from the company's department handbook enhanced this report with important details and
made it easier to comprehend each department's specific workflow.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

• The personnel was helpful, however owing to their busy schedule, they were time-
constrained.

• Employees of the company keep some confidential information, such as financial and
marketing information, to themselves.

Since no research activities are being conducted, there is no other option for locating the
issues.

• Since employee work satisfaction is a psychological phenomenon, it is impossible to

measure it precisely.

• The study only lasted 20 days; given this short time frame, it is impossible to complete the
investigation adequately.
CHAPTER 2

INDUSTRY PROFILE
GLOBAL SCENARIO
The home furniture market, office/corporate furniture, hotel furniture, and furniture parts are
the four primary categories into which the global furniture market can be divided. According
to a world bank study, home furniture accounts for 65% of the production value globally,
followed by corporate/office furniture (15%), hotel furniture (15%), and furniture parts (5%).
The arranged furniture market is anticipated to expand by 20% annually.

The rapidly expanding consumer markets of asia are anticipated to contribute significantly to
this increase, indicating great growth potential for the indian furniture industry. Due to the
current boom in the global economy and real estate market, the global furniture sector is
expected to experience significant expansion in the near future. The global furniture sector is
expanding as a result of rising disposable income.

The furniture industry produces a wide variety of home furnishings as well as interiors for
businesses, residences, and organisations. The economic crisis in 2009 had a significant
impact on the furniture business in industrialised nations including the us and europe,
however the market saw growth in 2010. The furniture sector in developing nations like china
and india offers a large scope for expansion in the foreseeable future. Future expansion of the
global furniture market is anticipated to be driven by the market in emerging nations.
The expansion of the global furniture industry is being driven by growth in the global
economy, the real estate sector, and urbanisation. The competitive environment of the
furniture industry is significantly influenced by low cost furniture producers from china and
vietnam. To draw in new clients, furniture manufacturers are placing more emphasis on
retailing their goods. The lack of competent labour, transportation, and cost-cutting, however,
present serious obstacles for the furniture sector.

With an emphasis on the uk, us, france, india, and china, the paper analyses the worldwide
furniture market. Analysis has been done of the industry's drivers, trends, and difficulties.
The big corporations are also profiled in the report, along with a review of their primary
business plans. We have forecasted the future development of the global furniture market
using the data integration and analysis capabilities of spss inc.

To ascertain the industry's future course, we used a number of critical variables that have an
impact on it and built regression models using spss base. Using normal spss output, such as
charts, tables, and tests, the association between a number of independent or predictor
variables and the dependent variable was examined before deploying the regression model.

The furniture industry is very large. International trade in furniture increased by 36% between
1995 and 2000, outpacing global merchandise trade overall (26.5%), clothes (32%) and
footwear (7%). (1 percent ). With a total global trade value of us$ 57.4 billion in 2000, it
surpassed clothes (us$ 51 billion) and footwear as the largest low-tech sector ( uss 36.5
billion). In the european union (eu), extra-intra imports of furniture increased by 20% from
1995 to 2000, compared to a growth of 17% for all extra-intra imports into the eu.

Furniture has historically been a resource- and labor-intensive sector that includes both big-
volume companies and locally based craft businesses. With the introduction of flat-pack or
ready-to-assemble designed furniture, mass-producing furniture became a practical
production technique. The companies were able to create, produce, and distribute products in
big quantities thanks to this product innovation. Mass-producing flat-pack furniture
companies often provide goods for low- to medium-priced markets.

Manufacturers of solid wood furniture have held onto significant niche market sectors,
mostly for high-end, pricey, and design-driven products. While mass-produced, high-volume
products are typically offered both locally and abroad, these specialist products are typically
bought locally,6 are from developing nations. (viz. Brazil, china, indonesia, malaysia, mexico
and thailand) and 4 transition economies (such as slovenia, poland, romania, and the czech
republic). These ten nations frequently import little and export a lot of furniture. Italy is by
far the largest net exporter of furniture among industrialised nations.

Fig 1 Global Furniture Market to Grow During 2020-2024

NATIONAL SCENARIO
According to estimates from 2006, the indian furniture market was worth millions of dollars.
Of this, $1,358 million (us) is spent on imported wooden furniture, and imports are increasing
by 50% to 60% annually. With a 17% share of global furniture imports, india was the largest
furniture importer in the world in 2004–2005. During this time, 10,476 imports of furniture
were sent to india, the majority of which came from china, korea, malaysia, indonesia, the
philippines, italy, germany, and spain. A small portion of india's gdp is made up of the
unorganised sector, which accounts for about.5% of the country's furniture industry.

A majority of this industry—roughly 85%—is controlled by the unorganised sector. Large

manufacturers like godrej & boyce manufacturing co. Ltd, bp ergo, feather lite, haworth, style
spa, yantra, renaissance, millennium lifestyles, durian, kiran, tangent, furniture concepts,
furniture wala, zuari, truzo, n r jasani & company, v3 engineers, psl modular furniture, etc.
Make up the remaining 15% of the market. Both residential and contract system furnishings
are included in the selection of native furniture that is offered in india.

a three-tier selling and distribution structure, consisting of the distributor, wholesaler, and
retailer, is typically used by manufacturers in india. The a, b, and c category cites dominate
the market (the top 589 cities). 33% of the market is made up of cities a and b together. The
market is expanding steadily as a result of a strong economy and rising family and
institutional spending. Similar to the global furniture market, the indian furniture market is
dominated by home furnishings, which account for around 65% of all furniture sales. This
was followed by the segment for office furniture, which had a 20% share, and the segment for
contracts, which accounted for the remaining 15%.

STATE SCENARIO
Solid wood furniture manufacturers have maintained significant niche markets, especially for
high-end, pricey, and design-led products. In kerala, expensive and design-led flat-pack
furniture tends to supply products for the low- to medium-price market. While mass-
produced, large-volume products are typically sold locally and for export, these specialised
products are typically bought locally.

Fit is a project of the department of industries in kerala. It is listed in the registration of

corporations, listed in the register of corporations, and listed as a si unit. In 1960, the division
was turned into a kerala government-owned corporation. Originally, the entity served as the
fact agency for the kerala forest department's production of wood. Fact modified their
procedure starting in 1962, hence the relevant operation was stopped in 1963.

From that point forward, fit's primary business activity has been producing wooden furniture
to satisfy the demands of the keralan government and the commercial sector. In kerala, fit is
the only government-owned business that specialises in making hardwood furniture and
joinery. Its key asset is a 50-year history of producing consistently high-quality items that are
both durable and beautiful.

COVID ANALYSIS
Due to the pandemic and shutdown, online orders for furniture have grown dramatically. The
COVID-19 epidemic that occurred in the early days of 2020 significantly altered the furniture
industry. The countries that rely heavily on imports for their furniture needs have been
severely impacted by the disruption of the supply chain and the temporary suspension of
global trade. The COVID-19 pandemic has also made it clear how crucial it is for this sector
to stop depending on imports and to advance digitalization and automation.

Fig 3 covid impact on furniture industry 2020

The number of online orders for furnishing in India during the first quarter of 2020 suffered
a continuous decline. However, with a negative month-on-month growth of nearly 19
percent, the sharpest dip was observed during April. This was soon followed by a steady
increase in orders. Overall, July was the most productive month during the measured period.

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

A government-owned corporation from kerala founded in 1946, forest industries (travancore)
limited is involved in the production of wooden furniture. Thaikkattukara, which is 15
kilometres north of kochi, 5 kilometres from nedumbassery international airport, and 2
kilometres south of aluva by the side of national highway 47, are the locations of this
building.

Fit is a department of industries-related kerala government undertaking. It is registered as an

ssi unit with the registrar of companies. In 1960, the unit was transformed into a kerala
government-owned corporation. Originally, the unit served as the fact agency for the kerala
forest department's production of wood. Fact changed its procedure starting in 1962, and as a
result, connected operations ceased in 1963.

From that point on, fit's primary business is producing wooden furniture to serve the demands
of the commercial and government sectors in kerala. In kerala, fit is the only publicly owned
business that produces entirely hardwood furniture and joinery. The government has recently
approved forest industries (travancore) limited to perform civil works. Its key asset is a 72-
year history of maintaining consistently high standards for product durability and finish.
Without conducting tenders, government agencies and organisations can buy furniture
directly from fit, saving a significant amount of time and work. In this regard, there is already
a government directive. Through diversification, fit is enlarging its scope of operations.

One of the main divisions of fit, which has a team of experienced engineers, is the

mechanical, and civil projects on a percentage-based basis. When accepting and rewarding
works, fit carefully abides the pwd guidelines. Department of sc/st, department of tourism,
and kerala university of health and science are among our principal clientele.

The guys who created furniture underwent a revolutionary change as a result of the increased
technical sophistication. Whereas formerly carpenters and joiners manufactured furniture as
well as every type of wooden building construction, a number of factors came together to
give rise to a new profession: cabinetmaker. The introduction or reinstatement of veneering,
first in western europe, then in britain, north america, and other places, was the most
significant

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE
In the context of business, organisation refers to the combination of people, things, tools,
money, management, etc. The classification of a job and its employees in an organisation is
indicated by the organisational structure.

The business has a solid organisational structure. A successful business management exists.
Close supervision and quick communication between employees and superiors are possible in
fit organisations, which have tight spans.
Fit adhere to military organisational hierarchy. The business has a centralised organisational
structure. The short management horizon in the organisation provides a number of benefits,
including forcing authority relationships through the emphasis on status-based presentation
and cross-communication.

The current organisational structure has been successful in ensuring that operations are
carried out at their best. As a result, the organisation has been able to preserve solid internal
ties and a sense of unity of command.

The board of directors is positioned first, with the managing director following. Under the
direction of the managing director of the company, the various functional managers make a
variety of decisions on behalf of the shareholders. The government owns the majority of the
stock in the corporation. The government's nomination is included on the board of directors.

To counter the fierce competition, they make strategic decisions and create numerous policies
with the assistance of the managing director and other top-level executives. The managing
directors are in charge of ensuring the organisation runs efficiently. They set the course for
various departments' activities in order to accomplish the organization's goals.

PERSONNEL & ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT:

One of an organization's most important resources is its human capital. The HR department at
FIT is effective, and the company values its workers. The department managing all
employee-related tasks has greatly aided the organization's expansion. Seven managers are
among the 70 employees; the rest are staff members. The leader of the department and overall
supervisor of the personnel and administration department is the personnel and administration
manager. The security guard helps him out.

PLANNING & PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

The company always has an attention to adopt and accept modern technologies in its plants.
The business consistently pays close attention to integrating contemporary technologies into
its facilities. They employ a number of modernizations and innovations to increase output
while reducing energy consumption, managing the environment, and utilising economic
inputs. The corporation markets its goods with the goal of becoming profitable. FIT doesn't
have any divisions, branches, etc. They only have one office, which is in Aluva,
Thaikkattukara. They are merely the lone player in this industry. FIT's production facility is
housed in the same structure. 9.095 acres of land are owned by the corporation, of which
1.475 acres are freehold and 7.62 acres are leased. The plant and administrative building are
located on leasehold property. There, the entire production process is completed. There are 40
employees divided across several areas in the production department.. The production unit
works

SALES AND MARKETING DEPARTMENT

The department's leader is the manager of sales and marketing. Both office and field
employees support him. The sales section prepares Performa when an order is received from
the public or from governmental organisations. It is a rough estimate of demand that is
forwarded to the production department, where it is jointly developed by the sales and
marketing manager and the production manager. It clearly states how much must be produced
each day and provides a rough estimate of the number of days needed for production. The
business gives little credit. Only grant credit to government agencies. There is no fit-based
unique selling policy.
CIVIL WORKS DEPARTMENT
Recently, FIT began civil construction projects. For renowned clients like the Kerala State
Government and other corporate ventures, FIT has successfully executed the installation of
furniture and civil building works. As part of our efforts to diversify our business, FIT is now
engaged in interior design and decoration, workstation installation, modern office installation,
including all types of flooring, drapes, electrical and digital wiring, painting lawns, and more.
Both former PWD employees and civil engineers make up this department. A tender is made
available in this department for government construction projects. A prospective supplier's
answer to a request for proposals is known as a tender. It presents a proposal for the provision
of goods or services. To solicit bids, tender documents have been created. Tendering typically
refers to the vendors.

PURCHASE DEPARTMENT
The procurement department is in charge of those tasks. The major duty of the buy
department is to acquire the raw materials, equipment, tools, and other items required for
manufacturing at the proper time and in the proper quantity from the right sources. The chief
of the purchase department is known as the purchase manager. The in-charge storekeeper
helps the buy manager, and under him is a material assistant. The Managing Director is the
buyer manager's superior.

FINANCE AND ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT

Any company organization's management must include financial management. For a business
to be successful, careful planning and management of financial resources are essential.
Controlling the sourcing and distribution of money within a company is the job of the finance
department. The company's finance manager is qualified in accounting, taxation, corporate
law, and financial management. This section produces annual cash flow statements. Every
day, cash and bank books are designed. The only interaction in subjects pertaining to finance
is between the finance department and other departments. Finance and the procurement
department are closely intertwined. Department. The buy department should provide a copy
of the purchase order to the finance department, and the finance department should alsoThe
finance department should obtain a copy of the purchase order from the purchase department,

operators and technicians are the primary factors in the processing section's efficient
operation because the plant is automated. Once Wood from government is brought to the
bensoi , the production department begins the process. The primary goods produced in the
plant i at the moment are furnitures.
