Gale Opposing View: Immigration

Immigration entails the movement of a person or people from one nation to another,

accompanied with the motive of residing there for good and all after departing one’s country of

origin and citizenship. Immigrants incline to be citizens of the host nation on most occasions. It

is pertinent to note that international students, tourists, and others, who sojourn and chatter the

country, are not immigrants. There are many reasons why immigrants decide to quit their home

nations. They involve political factors, such as dictatorship, ethnic cleansing, persecution,

genocide, and wars. Economic elements include higher wages, upgrade living standards, better

job opportunities, and an education. They are also met with the desire for family reunification,

not forgetting that natural disasters will drive them away to safety. Immigration is stirred by the

need to facilitate one's entity. Through a revamped transport system globally and better

technology, Immigration has bolstered to greater heights, and the number of immigrants is

increasing massively. Immigration is advantageous and disadvantageous to the immigrants

themselves and the host and home countries.

Social, economic, and cultural benefits realized through immigration in the host

countries, boosts the immigrants and a new start to life. Citizens back at home will feel increased

income through the decrease in labor pools resulting from immigration; economic growth is

fostering in the home countries due to immigrants' money sent home. However, immigrants face

challenges, such as assimilation difficulties, high cost of Immigration, loss due to liquidation of

assets, low wages, discrimination, and racism. Home countries encounter a decrease in

population, low production, loss of labor, and family composition changes. Immigration is a

social phenomenon triggered by several reasons and causes.

Nevertheless, irregular, disorderly, and unsafe immigration breeds numerous

complications, such as death, human trafficking, terrorism, drug trafficking, insecurity, and

disappearance of many immigrants. Several measures need to be adapted to curb the

complications associated with immigration flaws. They include -having efficient border

management policies to promote stability in the home countries of immigrants. It is also

important to advance and aid upgrade of education in immigrant’s home nations and increase

employment opportunities. Developed countries need to encourage the collection, analysis, and

use of credible data to promote regional cooperation and establish immigration laws and policies.

They also need to boost legal migration and enhance screening from immigrants and refugees

application results. It is also crucial to sensitize local officials, community leaders, and central

government about the plight of immigrants,-recognizing immigrants vulnerability.

The USA has the highest number of immigrants in the world as per the statistics of the

United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The USA has more than 50 Million

immigrants out of about 250 million immigrants spread across the world. Immigrants are

indifferent categories, Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs), undocumented immigrants, and

naturalized citizens. Other countries with a high number of immigrants are the Middle East

nations, such as the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. In these Middle East

countries, half of the population is that of immigrants. Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the Russian

Federation have a substantial number of immigrants, at least over 10 million in each country.

The USA has, over the years, grappled with the immigration issue. In 1790, the

Naturalization Law was enacted, although it only applied to white people. It required an

individual living in the country for two years to acquire full citizenship status through

naturalization. In 1868 the 14th amendment was passed by congress, which extended citizenship

to anyone born in the USA, including former slaves (Miller & Brian 145). Later in 1882, the

Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted, which banned all Chinese workers from entering the USA

until its repeal. Individuals who desire to migrate to the USA legally must apply to the embassy

in their respective countries. This application process ensures interviewing and checking their

previous criminal records, financial status ascertaining, and limited medical history. The

applicant also requires sponsorship from a relative or employer who is a USA citizen. Those who

lack special skills or a close can apply through the Diversity Immigrant visa program that issues

about 50,000 visas annually through a lottery arrangement. Legally family reunion is narrowed

down to spouses, parents, and unmarried children. Development, Relief, and Education for Alien

Minors (DREAM) 2001 get proposing by governments.

Legal citizenry status to unregistered immigrants brought to the USA as children has

never been implemented. In 2011 DACA policy – Deferred Action for Child Arrival was

adopted: it enabled unregister immigrants to work lawfully and suspended deportation if the

immigrant is in good books legally. In 2018, the US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS)

came up with a new office to investigate naturalized citizens and legal permanent residents to

falsify their citizenship application. In 2018, the US government adopted the zero-tolerance

policy against illegal immigrants; authorities put them into custody, and children separated from

their parents; this led to an international outcry. Global concerns stopped the separation of

children from parents. Mexicans have always been the most significant number of immigrants in

the USA; this has been so since time immemorial.

During the Second World War, the USA declared war against German, Japan, and other

allies; Mexico supported the USA. As a result, the USA agreed with Mexico to export their labor

to the USA to work, as most Americans were busy in the war. Many Mexicans thronged the

USA as laborers, creating a large community of Mexican immigrants in the USA; this program

was called Bracero Program. In recent years, about majority of the undocumented immigrants

and refugee emanate from war-torn areas like Syria, DRC and Myanmar. Indeed, Immigration

has alleviated the plight of many people in the world facing socio-economic and political

turmoil.

The rapid wave of immigration leads to a surge in population numbers in the host nations.

Massive population numbers bring about a great deal of exertions and strain to services and

Infrastructure. Migrants place transportation in very high demand with their increased numbers

for commuting. It is vital to note that there has to be a working and modest transport system for

immigrants to flawless integrate into the new society. The congestion of immigrants in upcoming

and developing cities with shanties makes it difficult for roads in the streets to be well occupied

by vehicles. Lack of streetlights and pathways in the slums hinders many immigrants' movement

and safety (Geneva Conference on Migrants and Cities 27). Strains in the housing, health, and

education sectors are immensely happening due to the surge in immigrant numbers in some

countries where there is refugee crisis.

Immigrants increase competition for existing jobs in specific work sectors, especially

when replacing existing workers. Occupations with low-skilled workers are likely to be extra

competitive as the labor needed is easy to acquire and readily available. Resident low-skilled
Surname 5

workers may experience low wages, as immigrants tend to settle for low salaries, reducing the

low-skilled occupation sectors' wages.

Immigration can threaten national security; some terrorist activities link to Immigration;

for example, the September 11 attack is highly linked to immigration loopholes. Policies that

govern Immigration were quickly out forth by president bush and incorporated the United States

Immigration and Neutralization Service to the Department of Homeland Security (Ousey&

Charis 69). Border controls tighten, accompanied by foreign nationals' surveillance in the United

States brought to scope by signing the USA PATRIOTIC Act. The legislation was authorized to

retard, prosecute and eject foreigners with suspicious behavior.

Home countries face a decrease in population as result of immigration. Humongous

amounts of Immigration will cut down to size a nation's population, leading to minimal

production and output levels not sparing economic spending. It is straightforward with this trend

the economy will suffer more as there will be no hope for change. Low production is inevitable

to the home countries as the power, and driving force to supply and manufacture is not available.

The economic meltdown is easily triggered due to low production due to insufficient supply to

meet the required development levels.

Countries of origin lose skilled labor, which could have been beneficial to them.

Professions and experts take their experience to benefit foreign nations as home countries remain

at a loose end. Lose of doctors and health practitioners spell doom to the health sector of the

origin country, especially during the pandemic period when they are needed most. Betterment of

education remains an arduous task for countries whose teachers have moved to find better pay.

Infrastructure gets crippled due to the required loss of expertise, i.e., engineers and surveyors.

Change in family composition in home countries rarely gets attention. In most nations of

origin, children, women, and the elderly are neglected. Older adults experience desertion at

home, as young men go looking for a better life; hence, separation creeps in. Many women face

separation from their partners who search for greener pasture, therefore high chances of broken

marriages and infidelity. Children left behind by immigrating parents are at higher risk of

dropping out of school and experiencing poor performance; some even go out for short-term

Immigration to join their families abroad and abandon school. Education progress of young

children is in jeopardy as the need for money has overtaken the quest for education and

knowledge. Populations of old age orphans have spiraled as more youth have abandoned them,

searching for a better life.

Geographical and zonal coordination reduces disadvantages and adverse effects

immigrants face; there is bolstering of global goals and visions through regional cooperation by

having human capital boosted by sustainable progress economic-wise. Social, economic growth

gets elevation through Immigration, which comes with positive impacts, i.e., increase production

and enrich culture. Upholding international standards about protection and respect to human

rights within a state and shun discrimination based on gender, race, religion, or immigration

status. The Haitian immigrants in Chile find it extra challenging to integrate into the host nation

for several reasons. Haitians speak a different creole language, which hinders their

communication efforts in the host nation. Chileans are Spanish speakers, which could be a

substantial reason for discrimination unleashed on them; not forgetting their color could also be a

factor. Regional integration is a perfect cure to this menace. Zonal coordination requires time,

much capital, and goodwill of country governments to be effective; the merit of social-friendly
Surname 7

and cohesion among immigrants and the host community is unmatched and worth the efforts

invested.

Minimize disease fearmongering; stigmatization towards immigrants based on being

disease-infested and are prone to quick disease infections. Some locals believe that immigrants

are usually worst hit because they lack better health care, live in congested environments, and

suffer from insufficient nutrition. Through campaign programs and sensitization missions, this

realization is possible to dispute such unproven beliefs that are barbaric. Over and above

governments, directorates and ministries can be a significant aiding factor in curbing the

stigmatization menace and having public health revamped by reevaluating how they furnish

health sector services and dispatch awareness to the local citizens—furthermore, distinguishing

health services and infectious disease testing from refugees and immigrant application results.

Immigrants might be discouraged from having required tests by merely connecting infectious

diseases surveillance to asylum status assent. It is so crucial for health practitioners need to work

separately from immigration authorities.

Health services need dispatching to the immigrants with due respect to their culture.

Front-line health workers should acquire teachings and training on the matter to do with

immigrants through the assistance of Intergovernmental organizations by developing

sensitization –training programs. Bring to the attention of community leaders, local officials, and

the central government the benefits and merits of discarding stigmatization about infectious

diseases by embracing innovative education and communication endeavors at all stages and

hierarchy. Teachers, tutors, and clergy members play a significant part in eradicating immigrant

children's worries being health hazards to the hosts. The media is the fastest and most diverse

medium of transmitting information globally, and they can assist largely.

Acknowledging immigrants’ susceptibility, often immigrants travel in a group or in large

numbers because they are vulnerable and can be exposed to significant threats in their

movements. Many a times they run away from excess violence and tribulations, natural disasters

such as floods and earth quacks and drought. Sound judgement and consideration should be

accorded to them, name-calling, discrimination and unsubstantiated accusation against them is

improper and insensitive to their plight. Countries like Venezuela and Mexico have been

reported to high number of rape cases and sexual abuses meted on female immigrants and

children; this explains why there is safety on numbers. Team movement ensures solidarity and

togetherness, safe passage and pinnacle of hope. Travelling in large numbers is very much

affordable, as it requires no huge sum of money; it is referred to as the epitome of safety and

security to immigrating groups who are vulnerable to attacks and abuse. President Donald Trump

at one point erred when he accused the large caravan of immigrants heading to United States as

being infiltrated by terrorists from Asia; however, he later apologized, as his claims could not be

substantiated. Recognition of immigrants’ vulnerability avoids such unfounded and

discriminatory remarks against the weak immigrants. Immigration is a big problem globally, but

the USA is a serious problem. There is a misunderstanding; it is a human necessity to look for a

better life and security for themselves to secure themselves economically, socially, and

politically. Therefore, the plight of Immigration has to have solutions on how the immigrant's

lives and livelihoods can be connected with dignity.

One solution to this problem of migration is to promote peace and stability worldwide so

that no one is compelled to leave their motherland in search of the so much desired peace and

tranquility. Most war-torn countries are the chief contributors of immigrants around the world.
Surname 9

They introduce peace studies in the curriculum and peace sensitization through the media

channels and hold peace rallies in conflict areas. Sensitization can initiate arbitration talks

between the warring parties to find a middle ground and coexist peacefully. If this solution is

applied, the number of migrants from war-torn areas or countries will drastically reduce.

Secondly, the promotion of education and not just education but quality education across

the world will ensure that people across the world get quality education that satisfies them hence

no need of moving to foreign lands in search for knowledge in foreign schools, sometimes the

search for better education opportunities results into immigration problems. We take cognizance

that students are not classified as immigrants. Still, sometimes others go as illegal immigrants to

foreign countries to search for education opportunities, but they end up as undocumented

immigrants in foreign countries. It is prudent to promote education across the world. It may be

costly on the onset to promote education as a solution to the immigration problem that bedevils

the universe. Still, the risk is worth taking because the returns are massive.

The immigration problem needs massive and sustainable solutions to cut down on the

numbers of refugees and other forms of immigrants moving to other countries. The creation of

employment for the local population may go a long way in solving this perennial problem of

Immigration. Once people can be employed in their respective countries, there will be no need to

move to other countries to look for jobs. Searching for greener pastures is one key reason people

migrate (Causadias 148). Boosting the home economy can be made possible by establishing

industries where people can get job opportunities to earn handsomely. This will reduce the

number of people leaving their home countries searching for greener pastures economically.

Consequently, enabling unemployed people to find business opportunities by giving them loans
Surname 10

and grants to start businesses and creating a conducive environment to do business can create

employment.

Immigration to be solved, we need a profound analysis and use of credible

data/information of demographics across border movements; this helps in planning for the

immigrants, be it on education, food, and healthcare. Planning helps in predicting labor markets

and seasonal trends. To solve this immigration quagmire clear legislations, need to be enacted to

enable a clear and accessible way to attain the much-coveted citizenship status; this will allow

undocumented immigrants and those who migrated as children to achieve full citizenship status.

If we have such legislation, life will be easy for immigrants; they will not have to keep hiding

from law enforcers for fear of being arrested, charged, and deported. If acquiring citizenship is

transparent and predictable, it will be easy for immigrants to obtain it; this will enable them to

get into gainful employment; this will positively help the economy, the immigrants, and their

families. After acquiring citizenship, the immigrants can do business, generate wealth for the

country, and themselves, even create employment for others. Profound and clear legislation on

citizenship has to be implemented by congress.

The immigration problem can be solved by increasing the number of Visa that is issued

annually. Through this program, more people who want to migrate won't be pushed to use the

unconventional means but will be able to access the land of Immigration through official

channels as the Visa is readily available at their disposal as long as they qualify through

interviews in the embassies of the countries they are moving to in their home countries. The

immigration huddle can be surmounted by providing safe and legal means for migration points of

entry; it will help the immigrants not to use unsafe and dangerous routes that can endanger their
Surname 11

lives—equally increasing the number of employment-based permanent Visa to go in tandem with

the market demand for sought after skills and experience.

Immigration problems can be solved effectively and swiftly if the USA government

eliminates the existing three and ten years' conditions for one to be admitted as a citizen who is

bona fide. This waiting period is the one that creates desperation among immigrants. The

government should extend benefits like education and healthcare to the immigrants to ease their

plight in the same breath. Conclusively, Immigration is a controversial and a misunderstood

subject. To save livelihoods and the future, immigrants should be given priority and attention

because it means a better world for all of us. Governments and leaders worldwide should strive

to make their people's lives better in their home countries instead of migrating to other countries.

This subject of Immigration is very passionate; it touches the nerves of the people affected;

today's immigrant children are our leaders of tomorrow however it is important to treat

immigrants with dignity.
