Diversity and Racism
Three examples of strategies that teachers and students can apply to overcome prejudice

and racism and develop acceptance of others:

1. One strategy is to be able to show a student that we all have a choice of the way we want

to act or see things. To try and show that coming from different places is not a bad thing.

We can’t let the fear of not knowing take over and create bad decisions.

2. Another strategy is to lead by example, create a safe space and to let the students express

themselves. Sadly, if they do take a negative approach, as the adult we will know it is

learned behavior.

3. To show everyone that kindness doesn’t have a race or color. Kindness is kindness. It is

free in this world. It is one thing we should always show to one another.

Define the text terms and concepts:

White privilege:

The definition of White Privilege, according to the text, is having the privilege, power,

access, advantage, or majority status. The way I take that definition is getting away with

something based on your race and economic status.

Explain how privilege affects the non-privileged:

Privilege affects the non-privileged by creating unfair opportunities or lesser

consequences for the privileged. I believe though, that the non-privileged work twice as hard to
prove themselves to the world, so they can handle the extra struggles. Although there have been

many unfair situations in the world.

Explain the cultural models and how they would apply to educational opportunities for students

from diversity backgrounds:

Cultural deficit:

The cultural deficit model can affect students from diversity backgrounds due to the educators

focusing more on the problem from a culture rather than the potential of the individual. I have

met many educators that believe that learning two languages can cause a learning delay, while

studies have proven that more than one language can help a child pick up on certain things

quicker.

The cultural mismatch model can cause inequality in a classroom. It can cause an assumption of

a student based off their cultural background or stereotypes.

The cultural difference model embraces the cultural differences and uses the differences as

strengths to be able to teach students. It creates the ability to learn even having a different

cultural background.
