OPHTHALMIC LENSES

An ophthalmic lens is a portion of a transparent medium bounded by two refracting surfaces, at least
one of which is curved.

An ophthalmic lens is a lens for correcting vision in a person with visual impairments where the focal
point of the eyes does not hit the retina. Lenses can also be used to address problems like astigmatism.
The earliest ophthalmic lenses were glass.

Contact lenses including hard and soft designs are worn on the surface of the eye. Their surface curve to
bend light and make sure it hits the right point.

Lens implants are another option. This type of ophthalmic lens is implanted in a sterile surgical
procedure by a surgeon after determining the appropriate prescription.

LENS MATERIAL -

Ophthalmic lens material means all materials used during manufacturing i.e. all material entered into
the composition of the basic ophthalmic lens.

There are three types of lens materials-

 Natural media
 Glass
 Plastic

NATURAL MEDIA:

Quartz or rock made out of pure silica was exclusively used.

Its hardness and low mist retaining property [water or liquid holding] made it ideal for spectacle lens.

It is not used in spectacle or optical instrument since it is doubly refracting material.

They are very rare to find, so their use is almost stopped.

GLASS LENS MATERIAL

Glass lenses are also known as mineral lenses.

It is colorless, transparent and resistant to heat.

It has scratch resistant properties and good optical performances.

The glasses are economical than resin material.

The glasses can be easily breakable.

Glasses cannot fit in rimless frames.

They are amorphous(lack of clear shape or form) compound and
