1. If you were in Kristen’s position, would you have chosen to be tested?
-If I were in Kristen's position, I would choose to get tested to detect any
gene defects that could cause or worsen any disease, that would also
help me know if I have acquired any hereditary disease. In addition, that
test would also help me to know if the diseases that I could have, I can
also transmit to my heirs. With those results that they would give me, I
can decide whether or not I would have a decency, I could also avoid the
disease, perhaps by having surgery on time, having some more specific
tests, or being able to be much more careful with my diet. In addition to
all that, I would feel very safe, and my life expectancy could be
lengthened and I could have a good quality of life.
2. Do you think genetic testing has more potential benefits than possible
problems? Explain.
-In my opinion, genetic testing has more potential benefits than
problems. I think the chances of the problems they could have would be
very low. Those who work on these genetic tests are scientists who have
spent years of study, specialization and have high technology that they
can prove a greater guarantee in their exams. In addition, what they do is
help you know what you have and continue with treatment if necessary,
and they also help you prevent certain diseases that you could have in
the future. In addition to that, genetic testing has potential benefits
whether the results are positive or negative for a genetic mutation. Test
results can provide a sense of relief from uncertainty and help people
make informed decisions about managing their health care.
3. If you had a genetic test and it indicated you were at risk for a certain
disease, who would you share the information with? Would you tell your
children, brothers and sisters, cousins? How would you make this
decision? Explain.
-Well, first, before taking that test, my close family would have to know
about it. I would talk to my parents, siblings, husband, and children first
and let them know that I have an interest in getting tested. After doing
the test and if it turns out that I am at risk of contracting a disease, I
would make my decision with a little concern and start a more specific
control of that disease. I would ask the doctor if this result could affect
the health of my family. And based on all this information, I would talk to
each of my family members and if the disease they have is hereditary, I
would advise each of them to have a genetic test so that they can also
control their health.

On a separate piece of paper, write a short paragraph explaining the
similarities and differences between the genetic testing story and Norman
Cousins’ story. Use the information from Step 1.
In both readings there are certain similarities and several differences. For
example, genetic tests are expensive, genetic counseling is costing you
between 300 and 400 dollars, while in laughter therapy, Norman took it only
with emotions. Genetic tests are used to prevent and treat diseases, while
laughter therapy is used only for treatment. in genetic testing it is based on
cutting-edge science, and in laughter therapy it is based on the reading that
Norman read called ¨the stress of life¨, which book helped him think about the
possibilities of improvement. In terms of results, genetic tests are difficult to
interpret and can easily be misinterpreted, in addition to requiring high
technology and in laughter therapy the results are easy to interpret. the results
in the genetic test have a high probability of involving family members, while in
the other therapy, the results only directly involve the patient. Finally, both
readings have in common that they are new therapy techniques and also that
both are becoming part of standard medicine.

Imagine that you are going to interview Kristen Powers. On a separate piece of
paper, write four interview questions that you would like to ask. Use at least
one word from the box in each question. Answer each other's questions as if
you were Kristen Powers or Norman Cousins.
-In the interview I saw, they asked Kristen Power 4 questions, among them
they asked her if the separation from her parents was the reason for her
mother's illness, in which she replied that many people believe that was the
reason for the her mother's illness, but they always interpret it in a bad way. In
that interview she explained that what her mother had was a genetic disease
which went hand in hand with some psychological problems, but she believes
that the problem or differences that her parents had was not the reason for
her illness, it could have involved a little but not entirely. Another of the
questions they asked her was about what was the first thing she thought when
she found out that her mother had this disease, to which she replied that when
she found out that her mother had this disease, she was still a child but she did
know and understand things. she at first had a bit of uncertainty about the
disease. Kristen said that this disease had a great impact on her family, it was
there that she wondered if she also had the same disease and then she was
interested in having that test. In the interview he also indicated how he
decided to take his mother to a nursing home, and if he felt homesick when he
left her. Kristen said that with her family she decided to take her to an asylum
that was a better place for her to be, due to her physical aspect condition and
her psychological. Lastly, they asked her what would happen if that test came
out positive, to which she replied that if it comes out positive, she would be
much more careful with her health and would choose not to have children so
that she does not have any risk factors, in addition to not enlarging the family
genetic problem, she also indicated that she still does not know well, but she
would try to enter an asylum or medical center by herself to take care of her,
because she knew that no one else could have given that special care, a clinic
could give her.

In small groups, report on two genetic testing companies. Do research on
the Internet to complete the following information.
-One of the companies that offer you genetic tests is, for example, the Unilabs
company. Unilabs was founded in 1987 with laboratories in Switzerland. this
company has excellent offices around the world, for example, most of its
offices are in Europe, they have one in Asia and here in our country it has 5
offices, one in Arequipa and 4 in Lima.
This company offers us a wide portfolio of tests where international health
quality standards are carried out. They also have a staff of doctors and
scientists who are experts in the area of genetics. they analyze how biological
inheritance is transmitted through DNA. For example, they offer us molecular
genetics services, which consist of detecting mutations in the DNA to confirm
or rule out any disease. They also have molecular analyzes such as tests for
neurological diseases such as intellectual disability, epilepsy; muscular diseases
such as muscular dystrophy or myopathy; deafness, cancer congenital
malformations, etc. It also has oncohematology, which is the study, diagnosis,
and treatment of acute and chronic leukemia. another service that Unilabs
provides us with is genetic counseling, in this field they advise us genetically in
the field of parental genetics, preconception genetics, neurogenetics,
dysmorphology and familial cancer.
With so many years of experience at Unilabs, it has a staff of doctors with great
experience and specialization abroad that allows them to work very hard to
identify the best treatment options for their patients. This allows to give a
personalized diagnosis and monitoring of genetic, chronic, and infectious
diseases. Unilabs is one of the genetic testing companies that provide a
guarantee, attention, and unique personalization and that is why most people
choose to be examined in this company.

-Another company that stands out for genetic tests is the Progenie company,
which is in Lima in the district of Los Olivos. This is a company dedicated to
DNA tests to rule out kinship and genetic diseases. Progenie is a very complete
clinic where you can find all that variety of tests mentioned above, which will
help you clear up any doubts you may have. That company has paternity
services, prenatal paternity, kinship, proof of ancestry, proof of maternity and
many more. It also diagnoses DNA diseases such as cardiology, neurology,
hereditary cancer, malformations, immunology, even DNA testing for weight
control.
Progenie provides us with several types of samples in paternity tests, the first
is the buccal swab, this technique is very safe and only 3 swabs are rubbed on
the cheeks inside the mouth to collect the mucosal cells and the cells necessary
for the process. Another test is the hair sample, this sample is a little more
special because at least 10 hairs must be pulled out from the root for greater
certainty of the result. It also provides us with blood samples, which is the
most common, samples of gum, nails, and semen.
Progenie is a very complete clinic where you can find all that variety of tests
mentioned above, which will help you clear up any doubts you may have. its
mission is to offer these tests with an accurate result using the latest in
scientific technology to give peace of mind and a better quality of life to the
patient.
