Design of Concrete Lab Project

Instructor: Uambreen us Sahar

Section: D
Session: 2017

Design:
You are asked to design a moment frame in a two-story office building using LRFD method.
The building will be constructed in Karachi site. The building floor plan is shown in Figure 1.
Frame A is shown in Figure 2. Frames A and E are moment frames and resist the lateral wind
load. The interior frames are gravity frames that only resist gravity loads. The floor is a 5-inch
concrete slab with a superimposed dead load of 15 psf. The roof is made of metal roof with
60psf dead load. Wind load acting on the vertical surface can be assumed as concentrated forces
acting at the joints as shown in Figure 2. The wind uplift on the roof is neglected. The beam-
girder connections will be shear connections. The following deflection serviceability must be
met:

Floor live load deflection = L/360

Roof live load deflection = L/240

The design live loads are:

Floor live load = 50 psf
Roof live load = 20 psf
Wind load = 25 psf

Based on the provided information, you are required to determine the following information:
ad combinations per ASCE 7

Structural analyses to determine the factored axial forces, shears and moments
Design columns in Frame A
Design girders in Frame A
Design beams framed into Frame A

Design Report:
Each team (there are 8 four-student teams and 1 five-student team) will submit a design report
to the instructor for review. This report will include the following:

Provide an overview of your design, methodology, what references you used, etc…

Discuss the project objectives, what was asked of you, what are the design criteria, etc…
Design of columns and girders in Frame A and beams framing into Frame A
