UNIT 2: FACING LIFE’S OBSTACLES


1. VOCABULARY RESEARCH

Do some research online and find two sentences per each one of the words in bold in page 37.

2. EXPRESS OPINIONS

Answer the question 1 in page 44: Frank McCourt had many obstacles in his life. What do you think
was Frank McCourt’s greatest obstacle? How did he overcome it? Make sure it is elaborated in a
paragraph format. Make sure you write a topic sentence (which is your answer) and appropriate
supporting ideas as well as a concluding sentence.

3. PRACTICE IN CLASS 01 - WRITING PROCESS TO WRITE A BIOGRAPHICAL PARAGRAPH ABOUT


FRANK MCCOURT

a. Use the prewriting activity Prepare to write: Listing to list information about the obstacles that
Frank McCourt faced in his life.

b. Use the information about grouping to organize the information in chronological order or in
other groups of classification that fit the information e.g., obstacles during his childhood, his
professional life, etc.

c. Use the information from the previous activity to organize it in the outline in page 57. Make sure
you write a topic sentence for the paragraph you will write about how Frank McCourt overcame his
obstacles, supporting sentences related to the stages of his life and a concluding sentence.

d. Write your first draft of the paragraph including a topic sentence, supporting ideas and a
concluding sentence.

e. Make the necessary changes and improvements based on the feedback you received and write
the final version of your paragraph. Use the final draft checklist in page 59 to make sure you’ve
complied with the use of target language and appropriate structures.

b. Use the information about grouping to organize the information in chronological order or in
other groups of classification that fit the information e.g., obstacles during her childhood, her
professional life, etc.

c. Use the information about listing to organize the information using the outline in page 57. Make
sure you write a topic sentence for the paragraph you will write about how Marla Runyan overcame
her obstacles, supporting sentences related to the stages of his life and a concluding sentence.

d. Write your first draft of the paragraph including a topic sentence, supporting ideas and a
concluding sentence.

e. Make the necessary changes and improvements based on the feedback you received and write
the final version of your paragraph. Use the final draft checklist in page 59 to make sure you’ve
complied with the use of target language and appropriate structures.

7. WRITING 02

IMPORTANT
- Type the activities in a word document. Not in a pdf or power point.
- Don’t use a text box.
- Write the headings in your files according to the order presented in this document.
- In every paragraph, underline the topic sentence. Use colors for the letters in order
to stand out vocabulary and grammar.
- Don’t use highlighters.
- Make sure the words are size 12 in calibri (cuerpo).
- You will present these activities in one single file along with the content of units 01
and 03.
