BASICS OF SETS

what is a set?

A set is a group of elements.

Basics of sets

empty sets union of a set

an empty set is a set that

the union of a set is everything
contains no elements.
in both set A and B.
example: A= { }
example A= { A B C D }
B= { A C R S }
therefore A U B= { A B C D R S }
An intersect of a set A compliment of a set

an intersect of a set is only

a compliment of a set is all elements
everything that is in common in
that are in that specific set.
set A and B
example: A= { 1 5 7 9 }
example: A= { 1 2 3 4 }
B= { 1 6 3 4 }
B= { 1 5 8 3 }
therefore A - B = { 1 5 7 9 }
therefore A n B = { 1 3 }
being only everything in set A
A subset

A subset of a set has the same

elements as in another set.

example: S={ 1 2 4 8 6 }

therefore the subset of S is

{ 1 } { 2 } { 4 } { 8 } { 6 }

{ 1 2 } { 2 8 } etc…..
finite and infinte sets

finite sets are sets that stop up to a certain ammount of

elements.

example: A= { 1 2 3 4}

infnite sets are sets that are going up to infinity.

example: B= { A B C D ………… }
universal sets

A universal set is a set withh all elements.

example: U= { 1 2 3 4 5 a b c f }

A= { 1 2 3 b f }

B= { 4 5 a b c }
