KEITH CARLOCK
ABOUT
KEITH CARLOCK
Keith Carlock is a US-American jazz and fusion drummer who is not only
renowned for his collaboration with Sting and Steely Dan.

Keith was born in Clinton/Mississippi in 1971 and started playing drums at the
age of 5. In high school he played in the jazz band, the show choir and the drum
corps. He intensely dealt with rock, R&B and soul, played along with records by
John Scofield, Michel Camilo and The Meters, among others, and joined several
top 40 bands. Because he practiced continuously and for hours, his parents
installed a soundproof room in the garage for him.

In 1989 he received music scholarships to Miami, North Texas and Berklee, but
decided to study jazz drums at North Texas State University in Denton because
he wanted to study with Ed Soph. This, as well as the Moeller technique he
learned there, changed his drumming technique fundamentally.

After having worked as a studio and live musician in the Dallas/Fort Worth region
for several years, Keith moved to New York in 1996. Since then he has worked
with such greats as James Taylor, John Mayer, Diana Ross, The Blues Brothers,
Grover Washington, Jr., Mike Stern, Harry Belafonte, Toto and many more. In trio
with Wayne Krantz and Tim Lefebvre, he performed at jazz events in New York
City and European jazz festivals for six years.

In 2009 he released an instructional DVD “The Big Picture: Phrasing,

Improvisation, Style and Technique“ and in the same year he was voted best
drummer in the fusion and pop categories in Modern Drummer’s readers poll.
