1. What is negative torsional shear and how it will be accounted for the design?

Torsional stress can be defined as the shear stress that acts on a transverse cross section which is
caused by the action of a twist. Torsional shear stress can be thought of as the shear stress
produced on a shaft due to twisting.

2. What are structural irregularities. Explain

3. Soft storey and weak storey concept.

Soft storey: A soft storey is one in which the individual storey in a building (Generally ground
floor level) is made taller and/or more open in construction is called soft storey.
Generally lateral stiffness is less than 70% of that in the above storey or less than 80% of the
average stiffness of the 3 stories above.
Buildings with a soft storey at ground level having open spaces for parking are known as stilt
buildings.
The beams and columns of soft storeys are designed to withstand 2.5times storey shears and
moments calculated for specified seismic loads. The shear walls should be designed to withstand
1.5 times the lateral storey shear force and should be placed symmetrically in both directions of
the buildings.

Weak storey: A weak storey is classified as a vertical discontinuity in capacity.

Any storey of a structure in which the lateral storey strength is less than 80% of the storey above
is called weak storey.
