Lab Assessment Skills Testing

Students will select a number which will pertain to a skill. The student will be assessed on only
one skill, but is expected to know how to perform all skills. All assessments are worth the same
number of marks. Each student will come with their assigned lab partner to perform the skills.
Students will sign up for a time slot that can be found on wiki. Please show up at least 5 to 10
minutes early. Any late entry will have time deducted from assessment time. Student must be
in uniform.

Testing: Week 3 in skills lab.

Equipment to bring: Penlight, stethoscope


Lab Assessment Skills Testing

Ears

A. Objective

Perform inspection and palpation of external ear, external auditory meatus, external ear canal
and tympanic membrane.

Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.


B. Special Test

Perform hearing acuity and name CNVIII.

Perform the vestibular function test and name the test

Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.

Description Marks
External Ear 4 marks
Inspect and Palpate including skin condition
External auditory meatus 1 mark
Otoscopic examination of the following: 4 marks
 External canal/auditory meatus
 Tympanic membrane
Hearing acuity 4 marks
Vestibular function test 3 marks
Total 15 marks

Lab Assessment Skills Testing

Eyes

A. Objective

Perform inspection of the external eye structures (eyebrows, eyelids, lashes, eyeball,
conjunctiva, sclera and lacrimal gland) and the anterior eyeball structures (cornea and lens, iris
and pupil, PERRLA).
Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.

B. Special Test

Perform the ophthalmoscopic exam for one eye.


Perform PERRLA and name CN III

Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.

Lab Assessment Skills Testing

Nose, Mouth and Throat

A. Objective

Perform inspection and palpation of the nose, mouth and throat.

Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.


B. Special Test

Perform neurological test for cranial nerves (CNs) IX and X, XII.

Students are expected to provide the name of the CN and state their findings.

Include CN I
Inspect internal nose 2 marks
Palpate sinuses 2 marks

Inspect structures of mouth and throat 6 marks

Skin, Hair & Nails

A. Objective

Perform inspection and palpation of the hair.


Perform inspection and palpation the skin and nails of the upper arms

Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.


B. Special Test

Perform the inspection and palpation of a lesion on the right upper arm.

Lab Assessment Skills Testing

Lymph Nodes, Neck and Thyroid

A. Objective

Perform inspection and palpation of the neck, trachea, salivary glands and parotid gland.
Perform ROM of the neck.
Assess the carotid artery.
Perform palpation of the lymph nodes.
Perform inspection and palpation of the thyroid.
Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.

B. Special Test

Perform assessment of CN XI, name the CN.

Inspect neck and paplate trachea 3 marks
Inspect abnormal swelling and/or
enlargement of glands
ROM Neck 1 mark
Assess carotid arteries 2 marks
Palpate and name lymph nodes 5 marks
Thyroid 3 marks
Inspect, palpate, and auscultate
Assess CN XI 1 mark

Head, Face and Lymph nodes

A. Objective

Perform inspection and palpation of the head and face.


Perform palpation of the lymph nodes.
Students are expected to explain their actions and findings.

B. Special Test

Perform assess of CNs V and VII motor and sensory funciton
