Learning Target RL.1: I can cite strong
and thorough textual evidence to support
analysis of what the text says explicitly,
including determining where the text
leaves matters uncertain.
Mood: In literature, mood is the atmosphere of the narrative. Mood is
created by means of setting, attitude, and descriptions. Though
atmosphere and setting are connected, they may be considered separately
to a degree.

Step 1: Decide what mood the author is trying to set for this story.

Step 2: Find two examples from the text of the story that illustrate the
mood you think the author is trying to set. Explain your argument and be
sure to cite your evidence.

The 1970s, during which Silko’s short story “Lullaby” was first written,
were a significant time in the history of Native American struggles with
mainstream American culture. There were pivotal political, cultural and
economic struggles of Native American tribes from the 1960s through
today. As evidenced by Aaron Huey’s Ted Talk, what has changed as a
result of these struggles? Was has not changed?
